  • This is our final film: the highlights from our closing event ‘The Last Campfire’ on November 5, 2022, where we gave Rebel Wisdom the send-off it deserves.
Featuring John Vervaeke, Ayishat Akanbi, Daniel Schmachtenberger, Adriana Forte and Nick Shore, with 150 people in person and 150 tuning in online from 40 countries. Covering some of the main themes we’ve explored on the channel through different talks and practices, we also hosted the first live conversation between Daniel Schmachtenberger and John Vervaeke. It was quite something, and we’ve left it uncut in this film so you can enjoy it.
You can read about what we’re doing next and how to follow our new projects on this Substack post: rebelwisdom.substack.com/p/th...
From both of us, a huge thank you for all your support over the years.

Rebel Wisdom was one of the first channels I found (or found me) that really showed me just what UA-cam could be. Thank you Alex and David for the countless videos that have completely changed how I see the world. Thank you for introducing me to Daniel Schmachtenberger, Jordan Hall, Doshin Roshi, John Vervake, and SO many more!
Best wishes to everyone at the team, and I will keep a keen eye out for all of your projects going forward.

I'm an artist in the entertainment business these discussions are ubiquitous and crucial in my life, I've been listening since 2016 like many others, you can't know how important your channel has been! At the time I was very much alone, without ways to participate and without community, but now it's very different and I'm applying a lot of what I learned long ago. Thanks so much!

Rebel Wisdom has been an anchor during some very turbulent years politically, culturally, and personally as I found this channel during my entry in to graduate school in NYC. I was very shocked and disappointed in the limited and dogmatic discourse happening in academia and RW helped me understand the larger context and players involved in skewing collective speech and thinking. Having been raised in an authoritarian religion, I did not have many examples and demonstrations of sensemaking outside of formal schooling, but David and Alex's accessible and stimulating conversations gave me a template for the types of discussions I wanted to hear and participate in. I am excited to see and support what is next and I have such gratitude for what you've so generously shared.

Wisdom comes from study, practice and experience. Growth happens. Religion literally means to reconnect. As a Unificationist, ecologist and holistic researcher understanding original identity, purpose and value, universally connected with the original parent to everything and with an understanding of original deviation which affected original love and sexuality response ability. Ritual is symbolic practice generating an image or vision leading to substantial experience. I really appreciate your journey and informative discussion. My context is formed by Divine Principle. Thanks again and best wishes for the future conscious development of our cosmic human family.

When is the last time you've seen a film about two people happily married for 30 years?
    I had an instantaneous answer.
Roger Ebert reviewing _Another Year_ (2010):
"He begins with Tom and Gerri, a North London couple who have been happily married for years. Immediately you can see the risks Leigh is prepared to take. A happy marriage? Between two wise and lovable people? Who are intelligent and alert to the real world? Not caricatures, not comforting, not cliches, but simply two people I wish I knew? I'd look forward to them every time I visited their house and be slow to leave."
Out of roughly 1000 films in my personal memory bank, I considered myself lucky to find one.

Pre Corona Rebel Wisdom was quite an inspiration for me.
But then I was quite puzzled, that David seemingly could not see behind what was going on (one could sense this, imo, e.g. with the exchange with ZDogg), so all the "rebel wisdom", was - in my eyes, at least - not very much wisdom, and not very much "rebel". I then quite gave up on this channel. Thanks anyway for your work!

1:58:54 John, when you said this I immediately thought to myself, “no one reads great novels any more.” I think reading great works of fiction is an excellent way to learn about taking other perspectives. You get to see inside the minds of the characters and realize the ways in which their thinking is similar to yours, and, crucially, how it is different. Do you think people are reading a lot less great fiction these days? And if so, do you think that hinders their ability to understand perspectival knowing?

I am glad Johnathon Rowsons ending of the begining and beginning of the ending part was kept in.
Was that the spirit of the trickster
In this liminal space that was never fully developed or explored by Rebel Wisdom over their time together?
Tyson Yunkaporta could have been a way in for being curious to this configuration/archetype/pattern that most definitely occurs in this space.
Is it because the trickster is seen as being embodied in deconstruction, post structuralism, post modernism, post humanism?? It could have been a fruitful enquiry that Bayo Akomolafe and Tyson Yunkaporta are delving into?
I do miss RW though......thanks for the impact and insight.

I was really taken aback when I noticed Vervaeke called science problematic. The problem with that is our understanding of universal processes is accelerating due to accelerating science and our powers in the world are accelerating as a result of accelerating technology. If you find this problematic, you will never ever grasp or solve the meaning crisis. The reason religions simply do not speak to us anymore is accelerating science and technology have radically reshaped our human realm. It isn't the human realm that it was during the Axial Age. And from the viewpoint of the traditionalists, the 21st century is going to get worse and worse--because the human realm of 2022 will NOT be the human realm of 2032 and will NOT be the human realm of 2042. We are in for further and further accelerations. It's not ending at any conceivable future date. I've watched a number of these interesting videos presented here on Rebel Wisdom and have noticed how little rebellion was really being communicated. Rebellion is natural when the world is changing so rapidly. Unfortunately most of the thinkers here have no idea, none, of what is really going down and what is really likely to go down in the years and decades to come. I leave Rebel Wisdom as completely frustrated. Face reality, rapidly changing reality or the meaning crisis will leav you in the dust. :(

It was content from RW that cut through the haze and woke my butt up. I can't remember if it was Jordan Peterson or Jordan Hall that I saw first, but regardless I was not red-pilled, but grey-pilled. The rabbit hole you provided allowed me to maintain my sanity and yes, sense-making, so I didn't reject Post modernism so much as move past it. I can see the faults in the Blue Church narrative but did not need to run to Trumpism. Perhaps early exposure (late 80's) to Wilber helped with that but certainly the phenomenonal thinkers you interviewed and hosted were instrumental in getting me through the last few years. I remember this being a good convo, but not why I'm commenting.
Hope David's doing ok. Bridging the gap between mainstream and internet culture was never going to be easy, but completely vanishing for a year, makes me miss that he was someone who tried. There's not the same cross-connection vibe he gives elsewhere and he bounced off forces greater than himself in trying. As many of us would come up against those same forces trying the same thing, I just hope he's doing ok. He did good work. The shallow online appropriation of Bret or David's side when a strong disagreement arose, I still wonder how that could be avoided. I was more on David's side for the vaccine debate, but I didn't want to reject Bret in other ways when I liked videos he was in, yet I felt that tention of the online space asking me to pick a side. But that whole offering pushback without alienating thing is hard, atleast for cases such as that. I feel David might have some insights on it, and if RW was still around he'd have told us.

Perhaps he will return, and this channel bounce back.
If not, we have and can share the wisdoms we have learned. Circling and Shadow Work are my big takeaways.

@@ninstar8165 Yeah. Maybe. Sometimes gaps (in content) can make the wisdom greater. A moment of silence in the greater pattern.
For circling, despite appreciating the wisom of it I never got over what feels like a shutting down of my social fluancy in groups of people. (I'm autistic (and introverted) in this.) For shadow-work, the faults built into our virtues will always be there. Being aware of them, so we mitigate our worst tendancies, will always be important. I have a shadow over why I don't want to do circling, for example, but not all shadows are lifted by naming them.
I subjectively felt their first videos were best, because I hadn't heard the ideas before. Objectively though, it probably went the other way. It certainly felt more ambitious in what they were trying to do later on. That perception difficulty could be part of why they stopped.

@@TimeGhost7 So, do you mean that giving others room to speak leaves you unable to express yourself? Yes, I can see that'd be an issue. Especially if the other speaker is assertive. I think having a third party to mediate would help, like a referee. Let TimeGhost speak!! xD
I don't think we can lift shadow characteristics! They are the ballast to our ship. Being aware is super important, though.
Perhaps they'd covered all the ground they could? The only thing left was ACTION. Rebel Wisdom pulled out before the Culture War began, leaving the rest of us holding the bag!
Thanks for the chat, all the best :)

@@ninstar8165 I believe that expression space (via a referee or group dynamic) would happen in circling. It's more I am unsure of myself when given too broad a direction and thus tend to say nothing, which is easier when not participating. And yes. We live with our shadows.
I think their inspiration might have been waning. They did relate their wisdom to the political fighting and their action was the group events, so I don't see what was unsaid/undone in those same terms. But yes. Thank you for the chat. :) I wish you well.

Rebel Wisdom was great as a channel that presented interesting intellectuals. But the motivations, assumptions, and contexts were never properly questioned. So it became a cult, which was made obvious in this episode. Regarding the meaning crisis, it was telling that JV said it needed 50 hours to define, and he defined it in negative terms ("Self-deception and self-destruction" and "Seeking wisdom but not finding it"). I see the so-called meaning crisis as positive because it is about the collapsing of the false. If we just notice that our happiness is not dependent on maintenance or gain (including meaning and a new religion), then it will all work out for the best. That's because there is nothing wrong with us. The problem was survival triggers and societal illusion, not people. Regarding the dialogue between DS and JV, it showed that gathering innumerable ideas won't solve the problem. Instead, we just need to end the illusion that humans are dependent and faulty. Find the cause of the leaky boat and you won't need to keep generating ideas to fill the holes.

May I ask, have you found any similar channels? Triggernometry is good, I think.

There was a lady in a video in the background raising a cup to her mouth. Was that allowed back then? There is something wrong with that.

At 09:00 - how sad for his children that he's not present with them on their way to school, that 'Daddy's' there but checked out, like so many parents today. Ffs, do better.
