I was never a big Ford person, but late 90's Ford Europe made some really memorable motors. The Ka, the Puma, the first Focus. This little coupé still looks gorgeous nearly 25 years later!
I have stage 3 puma, its close to 190 BHP, also it was lightened to around 800 kilos. It can do 0-100kmh in around 5.5s I hope to turn it to 4x4 one day.
Negative points (from my experience): they do rust a bit - especially around the rear wheel arches, the hatchback leaks water into the back when wet if opened too quickly, the metal gearknob is a fucker to grab on a cold winter's morning, ABS electronics are a bit iffy, the headlights are a bit dim (easily solved by buying better bulbs) there is the stigma of it being "a hairdresser's car" ....BUT all that pales into insignificance because it's SO much fun to drive, goes like shit off a shovel, corners like it's on rails, insurance/fuel costs are low and it's a Ford. Oh and there is at least one bloody good owners forum on line.
The Puma was designed and engineered in UK / Europe and the Cougar the US.. One was amazing to drive and dynamic.. the other was the Cougar. My Dad had a Cougar as at the time I had a Ford discount as an employee. It was a disappointment. I have had 2 Pumas back in 99 and now recently have a Millennium Edition Puma 1.7. One of the best cars Ford has developed over the last 2 decades.
I'm on my 2nd Puma .. 2001 (last year of production) and I've spent alot of money on it getting it back to almost new .. best car I've ever owned .. so much more fun than the 2 cougars I owned.. still only on 62k miles
Agree... Mine's 97' 1.7 had alsp 2 FiST-a and a Focus ST. Puma is great, but compating it to cougar is two separate worlds. Cougar = heavy sluggish mondeo. Didn't like it one bit...
Have to sell my Puma ,ULEZ is expanding in my area August 2023.. feels like a kick to the stomach having to scrap/sell it as its so reliable. Will look for an MX-5.
I hope whatever you did you didn't scrap it. There's still huge parts of the country where ULEZ isn't a thing and probably never will be and car like that will always find a buyer.
I think that Ford missed a trick with what was an astonishingly good car. Why have all that marketing for the young man or young man at heart? Women love this type of car. They like the image and like its turn of speed....and they have money. Look at the drivers of Audi TTS, Golf GTIs, Boxsters etc. They are not usually “guys of 25 to 35”. A bloke of over fifty in a MX5 or a Boxster shouts out mid-life crisis. An older woman in the same car shouts style and fun.The Puma should have sold in the hundreds of thousands. Faster GTIs had been killed off by insurance.
The advert was great, but it didn't look like the sort of car Steve McQueen would actually drive. For me, Diana Rigg as Emma Peel would've been a better fit.
So damned on the money my Mum loved this car and set her heart on buying one at retirement but by the time she actually retired they'd ceased production.
Puma's weak point was brakes. In that era Ford has a habit of under endowing cars in that department. Even the Jaguar XK8 was feeble in that capacity. Shame because the cars were otherwise very pleasant.
I had z lease one of these in Germany when there in assignment very much a driver's car.. hit the rev limiter a couple of times on the autobahn in 5th 6800rpm that car was way more than a fiesta in drag. Get a drive of a good one in 3rd gear or above speeds all the torque of the engine is allowed to the gearbox very ST like performance without the ST costs.

I still have my '99 Puma 1.7

As me. A DRIVER'S DREAM ❤... How Can a suv have the same name (sorry I'm French).

Who knew at the time Ford was turning the Puma into a SUV
One of the best looking Ford cars ever, this should be re-launched in North America.
Almost 20 years ago..... im getting old.
Next week I'm buying my first car, and it's gona be a puma
Did you buy the puma
How's the puma?
@@grantw451 like a puma😝
How is it?
yea im thinking about it too! but its kinda rusty already. ill propably will have alot of work
I wish we had gotten the Puma here in the US. We got something called the Cougar but it's proportions weren't as aesthetically pleasing as the Puma's.
We got Cougar, SW164, too in Europe/UK.

Per me è stato amore a prima vista.. e lo è tutt'ora, a vent'anni di distanza, sempre con me
Quale versione hai?
1.4 del 2000
I drive a puma in rear yellow 99 model in absaloot mint condition love it
Millennium edition with Recaro leather seats?
Thanks for uploading!
10:29 that phone :)
Guy at my work has one, as did my cousin.
Weird to see the concept had wheels that were more tame than the actual windmills they went with.
Well concept cars usually have big wheels...

That's why I upgraded mines with slotted ATE powerdisk brakes
Brakes a problem 🙄, they Brake very well.
Apparent the standard ST(150) brakes fit very easily and uprate the braking power and have bigger discs too
Does anyone here for Kori Turbowitz from Cars 2006?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Chassayy 😆
Rwd or Fwd?

Molto meglio dello stupido suv di adesso ...
“Aluminum trim”. Ah the grey painted stock black plastic 😅
I only like the mk 1 puma
Before car makers became ashamed of making cars.
The Puma was merely a Fiesta in drag, a wannabe also-ran
Hahaha says a guy that deffinetly never drove l et allone had. One, not even a fiesta to compare (which is the best driving car in it's class also...
@@ivanrodic2704 It is based on Fiesta parts and platform!
Yes, it is, so? Steering, suspension, engine, gearbox all revised and makes a world of difference. Not a Fiesta in drag but fundamentals done right.

Such an ugly rear end.
This was the ugliest car from the 90s. And who the fk name a model puma ?
