The fact that Ed not only threw away all he could find of Stede but also separated all the couples from the ship (throwing Lucius overboard and keeping Jim i nthe ship while leaving everyyone else in the island)
I love the symbolism here: Edward threw the pocket square away, which was a symbol for his heart. (That Stede put to it's place... I'm not crying you are). And once he did that, he threw Lucius overbord. Character who had helped him to be in touch with his feelings the whole season. Everything leans to the fact that Ed CHOSE to close off his heart because he was hurting so much. Also Ed's gloves change: he wears fingerless gloves most of the season. He is mostly covered but there's something real left, something that keeps him in touch with the world. When he is alone with Stede and after that on Thw Revenge: his hands are bare. He is in touch with his emotions. The world around him. He isn't hiding. At the end they show how he physically changes his gloves to regular gloves. He closes himself off.
All of thissss. Also, I can't get over that, in spite of it all, he kept the black neck scarf that he'd gotten from Stede. And his lighthouse painting (hoping it'll guide him maybe???). I do wonder what he's got stashed in the auxiliary wardrobe since no one else on the ship knows about it.
"Farewell bonnets playthings" that tells you immediately that he sees himself as one of stede's playthings too. And GOD it makes me so sad. Also the symbolism with ed as the kraken and stede as the lighthouse makes me feral. Can't stop thinking about it.
The gloves really mess me up. Gloves are always symbolic of characters wearing a mask, concealing their identity or motive (example that always comes to mind is Elsa and Hans from Frozen and the ways they take off their gloves). Ed initially wears fingerless gloves, semi-masked but wanting to reach out. After the Act of Grace he takes off his gloves. And in the end he's wearing full gloves. T_T
Imo Edward suffers with dissociation issues. He really doesn't have a singular cohesive sense of self, he has multiple senses of selves he uses in different scenarios. If Ed can't handle something, he lets Blackbeard handle it instead.
fun fact: the real Blackbeard really did take Stede Bonnet's ship and maroon his crew on a sandbar while Stede wasn't around, after both running away after the act of grace (can't remember if Stede was still with the english during the time) and Stede did eventually find them, grabbed a new ship and went looking for Blackbeard. Sadly that ended up with Stede never finding Blackbeard again but hopefully the show doesn't go that direction cause I would simply die edit: Blckbeard renamed the ship from The Revenge to The Queen Ann's Revenge to spite the english
Not to be all "uhm actually," buy The Revenge and Queen Anne's Revenge were actually two different ships. After Stede returned to piracy, he changed the name of his ship to Royal James and his own name to Captain Thomas so they wouldn't know it was him and he wouldn't lose his pardon
Fun fact, The flag with the devil stabbing the heart with a spear is acutually the real balckbeard's flag. I like the thought of the showrunner, David Jenkins, seeing it and thinking"wow someone had a rough break up..."
I think the juxtaposition of where Stede and Ed are at the end of the season is so heartbreaking. Stede is more sure of himself, who he is, and what he wants than ever. He's excited and in love and at peace with himself. And Ed is the complete opposite, no idea who he is, receding into the worst parts of himself to try to kill the version of himself that he liked best, who he was with Stede, but still not able to squash not only the heartbreak, but also his misery at being stuck back behind the Blackbeard mask. He was unhappy as Blackbeard even before he met Stede, he just didn't think he could ever be anything else, and he was so happy and relieved to feel that he could put it all behind him, only for Stede to (seemingly) reject him once he stops being Blackbeard, just like everyone else. And now he's where he was before he met Stede, trapped pretending to be someone he hates being, only now with the added dose of heartbreak and knowing what it felt like to be free of the mask.
@Tara Allen Stede isn't very good at following his own advice lol. If they had talked it through as a crew beforehand, he probably could have avoided the whole trauma with Chauncey and they could maybe have made a plan to check in on Mary and the kids on their way to China. But then again, I guess that doesn't make for very dramatic or exciting tv. Who doesn't love a good bit of angst? 🤣
@Tara Allen stede was clearly very confused about his own feelings and remember, he had that traumatic murder attempt by the badminton guy *after* that conversation. i think stede's freak out was incredibly understandable and human tbqh.
I love Mary and Stede's relationship at the end. Also, the symbolism with the petrified orange is so good; everyone but Stede didn't want it, but turns out it had a gem (or whatever, something beautiful anyway) inside it. This show really hurt me.... 😭
The fact that everyone in the crew has fans shows how much love they put into each character. Currently dying to know how Frenchie, and Jim are gonna be doing after this. I am in the camp that follows the line of thought that they wouldn't give Lucius a "comedic" death if it was legit. About Izzy, because I'm fucking obsessed with this character Since the show is about healing from traumas and such, I think there is a good probablitity that they chose to "redempt" him (as he's obviously someone who suffered from pretty heavy stuff too) Idk how they will do that, however if it was up to me I would make him slowly realize that whatever he had with Ed/Blackbeard in the past could not be ever again, that they relationship is toxic (for *both* of them, that's something we tend to forgot because Ed's a protagonist and Izzy's an antagonist, but I could write an essay on why it's toxic for Izzy too and how Ed is also responsible for it), and, something I believe he's starting to see at the end of season 1, that whatever is going on with Edward and their relationship is NOT what Izzy needs or even really want Then well, idk I'm not a show writer but the point is I think Izzy can (and is already starting to) realize that this situation isn't good for him, neither it is for Ed, and maybe would want to do something about it (I think, ideally with someone help? maybe Jim? Vico said they would love for them to interact in season 2 bc they have complementary stories and/or traumas or something like that; either way I do think it would be good for his character development to accept/look for help)
Like I'm not saying he would be happy about it, that's a whole character development he needs and unlike Ed he isn't seeking for change in the first place, on the contrary he's desperately clinging tp the past, so there would be a lot more struggles, or, well, differents ones at least, which would be very interesting to watch
(also he doesn't really need to accept Ed and Stede's relationship to grow as a person/character, he just needs to let go of the past and let himself (and Ed) heal, he can still be salty about Stede really)
@@arsenelutin1734 I agree, he could let go of Ed/Blackbeard and remove himself from the situation entirely without being okay with Ed and Stede, I just... Have a hard time imagining that. And I'm not sure I agree he thinks something is wrong in his relationship with Ed yet. Or, well, if he does he seems to downright enjoy it, so personally while I know the show is dealing with a lot of character growth from trauma, I just don't know how they deal with Izzy going forward. They very well may, and probably even will, I just have trouble seeing it.
@@stephanied1024 I know I'm kinda the only one in that situation but to me he doesn't seem to enjoy it :') Or, well, MAYBE he enjoy that... part with the toe, but when Fang ask him about his foot I think he really looks like someone *trying to convince himself* everything is okay (I can be wrong, I mean, again I'm kinda the only one I know who perceive it that way) So like, he isn't concious something's wrong, but deep inside he already knows, he's just in really bad denial I think for him to accept the reality, his relationship with Ed could worsen, in a way he would not be able to deny anymore (the thing is, for now he can still believe "Blackbeard is himself again", that *his* Edward is back, but we know this isn't true, Edward is not the same, this Blackbeard is not the same, and eventually Izzy will have to admit it, because he will search for their old relationship and not find it)
Glen in ep one "oh look at this silly funny comedy about pirates!" Glen in episode 6: "Are...some of them..potentially...gay?" Glen now: "well shit that was heartbreaking and what beautiful story arches and yup, they're all definitely queer" Yup. Yup
I struggle because on the one hand, in real life they did have a period of separation and then were together again, but on the other hand, Blackbeard stranding Stede's crew like that happened at the end of their second period together. (on the other other hand, it doesn't really matter, because David Jenkins has said if they get a second season they won't feel necessarily tied to a timeline of what actually happened - which would be nice, since neither of them met particularly nice ends. XD And it's not as if the show's been completely accurate as of yet anyway.) The actress with the eye patch is Kristen Johnson - I know her best from 3rd Rock From the Sun (tv show in the late 90's) but she's been in loads of other things, and is awesome. Apparently also the wild cat in this episode was real, not CGI (I heard in an interview it was one used in the video for WAP XD), but it does look fake against the building. Wondering if that part was green screened or if it was part real, part CGI...
it's become my life mission to harass the ofmd and hbo twitter accounts for season 2 whenever they post, i've been at it for three weeks and i do not plan on stopping
I know these reactions are from last year but I have been really enjoying them - it's been fun watching someone see this for the first time and love it. Thank you!
Interesting how Ed didn't stab Lucious, merely threw him overboard--removing him non-lethally. Even as Blackbeard he never "directly" killed anyone, so repeating that with Lucious implies he's not too far gone.
@@GlenOwen Yeah. Goes double for this show, which handwaved semantics like the size of the ocean. (Not complaining: someone even theorized those discrepancies stem from the creator’s playwrite background.)
I think that stede leaving to go back home with his legal family and seeing with his own eyes that it is not his place was necessary, bc if not, he would have felt shitty about leaving them for the rest of his life, and now that he did it, he is completely free and happy with himself. Seeing how hurt Ed is, their re-meeting would probably be a disaster, but knowing that Ed still wears around his neck that piece of silk that belongs to stede, and he's still keeping that and the lighthouse painting (so he didn't throw away everything related to stede) I'm not loosing hope lmao I really need a season 2 asap tho 😭😭
@@GlenOwen yes!! someone from the show (can't remember who if it was, sorry) confirmed that he did throw the red silk piece (we saw that), but the black piece he had around his neck is still there with him:) And yeah! they clearly still love and miss each other so fingers crossed for a second season ☺️
What an ending! I’m glad you liked the show so much, but yeah they definitely put you through the wringer! Love the shot at the end where stede stands like a lighthouse…perfectly ties it all together. And lucius better not actually be dead!! Anyways yeah, great reaction!
Oh that’s a great idea! Izzy becoming Blackbeard would actually solve so many “problems”! Like the man loves the idea of Blackbeard without really realizing that there is a man behind that idea so if he becomes Blackbeard himself he can continue on loving, admiring and keeping up the idea of Blackbeard while not hurting Ed in the process. In conclusion (prepare for some horrible words XD) Izzy should become a Yandere. (I’m sure I spelled it correct.)
@Tara Allen I very much agree with your interpretation of Izzy and his toxic masculinity traits which he pushes onto others. But do you really think this show would go the direction of killing him? My previous comment was more of a joke (though it really would solve some things) but instead I hope we'll get to see Izzy realizing that his way of dealing with emotions is wrong and not healthy for both him and Edward. This I'd love to see happen when Stede comes back, does a whole lot of apologizing (and so does Edward because how dares he throw Lucius overboard and strand the rest of the crew on an island!) after which Izzy is pushed away because Ed realized that it was him who made Ed become Blackbeard and miserable again. :)

Thank you for being upset with Ed! I’m tired of most people glossing over what he’s done & just pitying him because Stede got kidnapped & gaslit to punish himself. I’m so upset with how Ed chose to handle this! I hope he gets embarrassed once Stede returns & explains what went wrong.
😂😂😂Your reaction: No, no, no, no.... Squad, please, please .... Yeah, man, the last two episodes mess you up big time. There needs to be a season 2 to resolve this.

Then well, idk I'm not a show writer but the point is I think Izzy can (and is already starting to) realize that this situation isn't good for him, neither it is for Ed, and maybe would want to do something about it
(I think, ideally with someone help?
@@stephanied1024 I know I'm kinda the only one in that situation but to me he doesn't seem to enjoy it :')
Or, well, MAYBE he enjoy that... part with the toe, but when Fang ask him about his foot I think he really looks like someone *trying to convince himself* everything is okay (I can be wrong, I mean, again I'm kinda the only one I know who perceive it that way)
So like, he isn't concious something's wrong, but deep inside he already knows, he's just in really bad denial
I think for him to accept the reality, his relationship with Ed could worsen, in a way he would not be able to deny anymore (the thing is, for now he can still believe "Blackbeard is himself again", that *his* Edward is back, but we know this isn't true, Edward is not the same, this Blackbeard is not the same, and eventually Izzy will have to admit it, because he will search for their old relationship and not find it)
Glen in ep one "oh look at this silly funny comedy about pirates!"
Glen in episode 6: "Are...some of them..potentially...gay?"
Glen now: "well shit that was heartbreaking and what beautiful story arches and yup, they're all definitely queer"
Yup.
XD And it's not as if the show's been completely accurate as of yet anyway.)
The actress with the eye patch is Kristen Johnson - I know her best from 3rd Rock From the Sun (tv show in the late 90's) but she's been in loads of other things, and is awesome.
Apparently also the wild cat in this episode was real, not CGI (I heard in an interview it was one used in the video for WAP XD), but it does look fake against the building. Wondering if that part was green screened or if it was part real, part CGI...
This show is an emotional rollercoaster
I'm sure we will get one.
My dear, there are now over 3000 fanfics on AO3 to hold us over until season 2. 🖖
Wow! Last weekend, when I looked, there were a bit over 1500. I love that this fandom moves fast
@@CrisSelene You can almost watch the ticker go up every time you refresh, lol.
it's become my life mission to harass the ofmd and hbo twitter accounts for season 2 whenever they post, i've been at it for three weeks and i do not plan on stopping
that poor intern JDJHJHSJH
Huzzah!
Same.
as you should
thanks for taking us through this emotional rollercoaster ❤️🫠
Thanks for sitting next to me!
Super interested to see what you think of season 2!
I’m with you. General rule of thumb: unless you actually see them die, they arent dead
@@GlenOwen
Yeah.
Goes double for this show, which handwaved semantics like the size of the ocean. (Not complaining: someone even theorized those discrepancies stem from the creator’s playwrite background.)
Our Flag Means Death is such a breath of fresh air.
Question, have you watched Barry? If not… may you watch Barry?
Bro didn’t he throw the silk away!?! Still has the painting though for sure!
They can’t not get
Together!
@@GlenOwen yes!! someone from the show (can't remember who if it was, sorry) confirmed that he did throw the red silk piece (we saw that), but the black piece he had around his neck is still there with him:)
And yeah! they clearly still love and miss each other so fingers crossed for a second season ☺️
I’m sad your reactions are over, but I’m glad you liked the show! I think it’s fantastic and I’m so ready for more!
What an ending! I’m glad you liked the show so much, but yeah they definitely put you through the wringer! Love the shot at the end where stede stands like a lighthouse…perfectly ties it all together. And lucius better not actually be dead!! Anyways yeah, great reaction!
No way they Kill Lucius. He's so beloved!
Screen 101: Unless you see the last breath, they ain't dead!
Can't wait for season 2
My hope for the series end is that ed and Stede both take on new identities and Izzy becomes blackbeard only to be killed by the english
@@karamelalb2328 Exactly! Everybody gets what they want lol
:)
The eye patch lady is from an old show called Third Rock from the Sun
What a wild ride, start to finish!
Very hard episode to watch. Especially the toe scene. That was brutal. It was a gut punch when I first saw it. Then making Izzy eat it!
Ah man your reacton, when things started to go downhill - and we all expected it, but still... I can watch this show over and over and still not being ready for this end. I need second season right NOW!!! :D Enjoyed all your videos on ofmd! It´s great to see, that show is getting attention it deserves!
I absolutely love your OFMD reactions. This season was such an emotional rollercoaster. I can't wait for Season 2 (and hopefully your reactions to it in the future!) :D
Ok but you respecting Jim’s gender neutral pronouns made my evening
Thank you for being upset with Ed! I’m tired of most people glossing over what he’s done & just pitying him because Stede got kidnapped & gaslit to punish himself. I’m so upset with how Ed chose to handle this! I hope he gets embarrassed once Stede returns & explains what went wrong.
Let’s hope so.
I’m big on personal responsibility. Don’t let other people change you, Edward!
fun fact: thats the same leopard they used for the WAP music video
WTF. Fun fact of the day for sure!
😂😂😂Your reaction: No, no, no, no.... Squad, please, please ....
Yeah, man, the last two episodes mess you up big time. There needs to be a season 2 to resolve this.
@GlenOwen will you be back with series 2 reactions? 😊
Love ❤️ your reaction video have helped with my our flag means death 💀 withdrawal
Same
Season 2 is there!! You should definitely check it out!! :D
this episode still gives me whiplash
OK even in this reaction it still frustrates me.I think it is the biggest cliffchanger I have ever seen at the end of a series season.
there is not enough fan fiction out there to keep me from sadness.
Are people writing a lot of fan fiction?
@@GlenOwen the void is big, there are over 4000 works on A03 already
Your poor face! You're so upset! XD (This is only funny to me because I went through this phase a few weeks ago and the stabbing pain has softened to a dull ache, sob)
6:47 I FELT THE SAME WAY
I am so sad this your last ofmd reaction vid (for a while at least) 🥺
(Can't wait to see you react to wwdits tho)
at least izzy is happy
screw izzy 😩
😭
Izzy 😡🤬
Can’t wait for Jim to throw him off the ship and drown ❤️
No, Izzy is only happy when miserable.
Thanks for doing this it was a good time
I would love to see your reactions to "Barry" it's on HBO and the 3rd season is coming tomorrow!
Hey! Thanks for filling me in. I've been looking at that show for a while, and I loved Hader on SNL!
Note to self : Don’t watch this episode during breakfast / before classes start
Unless you want to feel literally a million feelings
@@GlenOwen that
And the fact that watching someone force someone else to cannibalise their own toe makes it very hard to stomach eggs
The show runners better make it up to us on season two! 😤😡😠
Just discovered your channel. It’s so interesting to see someone watching this who doesn’t go in knowing it as the ‘gay pirate show’ to see when it clicks for them that Ed & Stede are falling in love. Now that season 2 is out will you be continuing?
YAY!
They could have just catch fish from the water. Why did they turn to cannibalism instantly. That's sick.
Probably for the lolz. Fishing just doesn’t seem as funny
the jaguar was real tho?? its not 3d
Omg please watch season 2
