The thing that helped me was to understand what 'light pressure' means. I used to handle the razor with too much pressure a long time. Since I just handle the razor like I barely wanna touch the skin, I don't have irritation any more and I get very close shaves since then.

Using an alum block after a rough shave was a game changer for me. Use it after all but the smoothest shaves now.

    • @BuffaloNickel9
      @BuffaloNickel9 Рік тому +2

ABSOLUTE GAME CHANGER IS THE ALUM! A lot of these people are claiming to have sensitive skin and I really don't think they do. I look at 99% of them and I would like to have their skin. I swear it's almost like it's a fad these days to claim you have "sensitive skin". They get one ingrown hair occasionally, then claim they have sensitive skin. The number one factor if you'll be born with sensitive skin is if one of your parents has this very *fair* skin.
Now I have *actual sensitive skin.* My mother has it. I have Irish skin. For straight-up reducing razor bumps on your neck and face the absolute best thing you can do is the coldest Water Rinse possible after shaving and most importantly THE ALUM! If you're not using an Alum block, then you're not correctly finishing your shave. And believe it or not, not that many people do?
Its the Single most important thing for anyone who's prone to razor burn. The cooling, stinging sensation Alum has is because of the antiseptic qualities that sooth irritation and kill any bacteria on your face.
If someone is not finishing theie DE shave *with cold water and an Alum Block,* they're making a huge mistake especially if they have sensitive skin...

So happy I found this channel - thanks for sharing and thanks for all of the tips! Over the last 5-8 years I went from a beard trimmer for a beard; then switched to shaving the beard into a mustache & a no guard head shave (as I have balded up top).. decided to upgrade the beard trimmer and broke the bank 4 months ago for a braun series 9 for head & face/mustache, and realized - CRAP, how can i edge my mustache lol so I here w/250 less in my bank & bad irritation to the chin/back of head due to dry shaving and missed hairs all over my next... yup... time to invest and research Wet shaving... & boy your channel has helped exponentially.
Such a vast world and can be overwhelming tbh... thanks to you I have narrowed it into a purchase!
Got a rockwell 6c on the way along with some decent products for pre/post w/your recommended brush and i am PUMPED. Wanted to invest more to get the nicer stainless steel razor, but who knows maybe Ill upgrade if it works or find another cool DE razor to add to the collection if I decide this is the route (which I know now is due to the fail of the foil shaver lol maybe I can find some use in a pinch!).
Will 100% continue to watch your videos as i educate myself on more products (creams/soaps/etc) and will expand more into your channel when figuring out the whole "razor" replacement world lol one step at a time! THANKS AND SUBBED!!!

Just came across this. The 10 day every other day routine with 1 pass was perfect for me. Pretty much just as close as my Gillette 5 blade cartridge was with way less tugging. The last time I tried DE everyone had me convinced that you have to do the 3 pass BBS smooth shave. My face just couldn't handle that. I also love the cold water shave. It really does help. Great suggestions. I'm a DE convert now and have an assortment of blades to try out on my way from you guys as we speak.

I had lots of issues with razor burn/rash on my lower neck. The Proraso or PAA Cube help alot, but for me, the key was finding a blade I idn't hate and using an adjustible razor. I find that a Wilkinson Sword works okay for me, and I have a few PolSilver in my cabinet which are my favorite (thanks for the Perma-Sharp recommendation, btw) and adjusting the razor to a lower number for my lower neck was really the key that I was missing. The other two things which worked (an I learned from this channel) were to not go for BBS every time (other people talk about BBS like it is always achievable for every shave), and to grain map the face.
This was a good video, and would actually be a nice "beginner's" video about wet shaving in general. Thanks for sharing!

Same here. I have a wire beard and soft skin, which is what led me to using DE and straight razors. That and the fact that cartridges didn't even last a full shave before they were dull, and at nearly $5 per cartridge, I'll pass. Wet shaving was a big improvement, but it wasn't until I took the plunge and started shaving cold - not showering first, and using cold water - that I saw the best results.

Thanks for all the great tips! I have sensitive skin especially below my jawline. Since I am only about 12 shaves into my wet shaving journey, I have going for the 3 pass shave. This has caused a bit of irritation on my neck. I rinse my razor in cold water but I think I’ll try the following: Cold water on my face and only 2 passes on my neck. Hopefully that will do the trick. I like your comment about NOT trying to get a BBS shave when you have sensitive skin. Totally makes sense. I need to dial back that obsession. I do, however, shave every 2nd day which gives my face a chance to settle down. After shave balms really help my skin especially on my neck. Cheers.

Great video! Thank you for being so down to earth. I also have to shave my neck in two or more parts. I’m pretty good at it with a straight razor. I have been learning de and had mixed results. Even using the same razor and blade it varied from super smooth with minimal irritation to bloodbath. I’m pretty sure I started treating my Muhle R41 like a cartridge razor with disastrous results. I will be looking into the cold water variable though. When my Ambassador arrives I will have a shave where I reduce the number for my neck and see how it goes. Thanks again.

Matt💈💈 Nice tutorial on sensitive skin shaving using the Proraso White product line. Personally I don't have sensitive skin as a whole but some areas are more prone to irritation. Also I use a multitude of products when shaving as I'm a collector and wet shaving nutcase. I never use the same product(with the exception of a balm)more than once a month or longer, with dozens of soaps, razors, brushes, blades and more, I change products every shave. My routine though is the same every time, consistency is key to good results for me. Proraso Green is my fav of the line but I do want to try the Blue. Thanks again, nice video. Enjoy!

This was such good advice and I learned a lot about the importance of going slowly with the razor, stretching my skin slightly, aiming for a clean first pass (by treating first pass as if it was the only pass I can have, makes a huge difference, then the other passes become so much easier), following only the grain, and lastly knowing that it’s more important to have a healthy shave rather than a deep-cut one. Thank you so much! :)

The Taylor of old bond street is the most supportive foam that I have found which prevents nicks. Also lather up then go strop that razor then lather again...great thick supportive cream letting that cream gel up some! Good stuff! My best advice against irritation for people with sensitive skin is a skin stretching. It's very important. Because your skin is like a wobbly gel with copper wires inserted in it. What happens when you shave unstretched skin. This gel wobbles and creates "skin peaks". This wobbling and skin peaks always leads to irritation. By stretching the skin you eliminate this wobbling and peaks. Always use stretching when you shave. Try to pull your skin in as many parts of your face as you can. The easiest way to pull the skin while your face is covered with shaving soap. Is to dab your fingers against a wet alum block. Try it for yourself. You'll be surprised. How grippy your fingers become. Use only natural alum blocks such as OSMA. Watch youtube videos of barber shaving. It will show you how to stretch your skin. My second best advice. Try to use the lightest pressure or only weight of your razor even if it's plastic. Grip your razor near the bottom of the handle and let the head tilt to your skin. Try proraso green pre shave, but not the white one. Use OSMA alum block after the shave. Alum block will heal your skin and give you feedback where you pushed too hard on a razor. Cold water shaves for me aren't eliminating the chance of getting cut. Cold water shave - is very uncomfortable during and after the shave. My head always feeling numb after cold water shaves. It's a super uncomfortable feeling. Warm water shaves very comfortably with the same chance of getting cut. 18:40 - Matt, why are you using tweezers to squeeze the retention clip? You can easily do it with two fingers.

Matt, nice video. I recently came off a three week higheatist from wet shaving because of really bad skin irritation. I have sun damage on my face from sunbathing in my youth. As a result, my skin is very sensitive to any type of shaving changes. In my pursuit of finding what works for me I went from using the Parker 92R to the Rockwell 6C along with changing my razor blade to the Lord Platinum razor blades. The razor and blade change made a huge difference in delivering a comfortable shave. However, there were still other variables that were causing me discomfort. I noticed that brush I was using, the Parker Black Badger, was giving me a scratchy feel when I lathered my face, to the point of being irritating. In addition to the brush I noticed that the shave soap I was using, Barbershop by Stirling, was also giving me some irritation. I recently ordered a synthetic brush to replace the badger brush and I am using Cella instead of the Stirling Barbershop. When it comes to essential oils and fragrances a lot of "Fragrance Oils" added to soaps to create a scent include Oak Moss. France has limited the use of Oak Moss because of skin sensitivity to it in about 30% of the people using fragrances that contain Oak Moss. I am assuming that Oak Moss is the source of the soap irritation for me. I have also tried the Proraso shave soap, as opposed to the shave cream, for sensitive skin. I found the shave soap provides a great shave, however the post shave feel that I get leaves my face very dry feeling. My son uses the shave cream and he swears by it's slickness and post shave feel. As you indicated in the video, take the time to find what works for you and stick with it. In my case, this will take a little more time than most other people. God bless, be safe and stay healthy.

Finally tried cold water (I think originally the advice was from Sharpologist but I didn't try it back then).
    seems to have helped.
Still experimenting with the preshaves - proraso seems to be good as any.
Also a little counterintuitively, it seems that shaving more often lowers the irritation. My rationale after-the-fact is that there is less growth that is easier for the blade to handle and there's less pulling and tugging.
Still trying out different blades, the Bevel is definitely a pleasant surprise.

My skin is not sensitive, but I do have problematic skin conditions: My skin dries very quickly (took Accutane when I was young) and I have rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis. My facial hair is not particularly dense, but it is coarse. So for me a mild razor (the usual suspects) and sharper blade (Feather is too sharp for me) works very well. I can use a Merkur slant with a mid-aggression blade such as a Shark Chrome, but not on a daily basis. The Progress also works well for me, but I haven't found the right blade or setting yet. For soap I avoid cologne scents as they will irritate my skin over time. I prefer Proraso White or a cream with an almond or light citrus scent. In general, creams are gentler on skin than hard soaps. For aftershaves I gravitate towards lightly scented balms while avoiding alcohol as an ingredient. Or sometimes I just massage in some jojoba oil mixed with shea butter. Since I avoid aftershave splashes, I use Thayer's cucumber witch hazel as a toner. One-pass shaves just don't work for me; instead, I do a two-pass shave: First pass with the grain and the second pass at a 45 degree angle to the grain (XTG pass will lead to bumps in some areas and razor burn in others). I lightly stretch the skin as I find that this helps the razor glide more smoothly across the skin, which results in less irritation. I've tried oil as a pre-shave, but I don't care for it. Pre-shave creams such as Proraso do work well, especially during the drier months. For brushes, I avoid brushes with scratchy bristles. Soft synthetic brushes work best for me. If I need a stiffer brush for harder soaps, then the Omega Hi-Brush synthetic will do the job well. Or their imitation boar brush (synthetic knot) works well for me with a variety of soaps and creams.
Thanks for the video. I learned a few things and you answered some questions that I've had.

Cold water and a single layer pass with a sharp DE blade, along with the Proraso white line keep my face irritation free. I use an alum block for the nicks because it doesn’t leave chalky residue and then I wash it off. The Proraso white aftershave is not greasy, either. It smells good and gets absorbed by the skin.

For razor burn, I apply beard oil. It seems to help. My theory is that air irritates the burn but the oil blocks air from touching the skin. Just a theory.
Also, my wife tends to clean and organize the bathroom. So I never leave a blade in the razor for fear she'll absent mindedly grab my razor and slice herself badly.

very nice video. only thing i would add to that MAP YOUR GRAIN as you said most important. i thought i has sensitive skin . but i think it was because i was shaving against the grain on my neck in places on the first pass . once i had sorted that out no problem. and as you say don’t chase that bbs . if you get it great if you don’t mabey the next time . big issue for me was over shaving . and last but not least give it time . it will take your face a little while to get used to a different type of shaving . oh and last last bit not least NO PRESSURE OR VERY LITTLE ON THE RAZOR . another one of my mistakes in the start 👍👍

    Cold water
    Shower before shaving
    Preshave
    Razor/blade right pairing
That said.. Some products work better with sensitive skin:
    Razors:
    RR SLOC
    Blades:
    Derby
    Soaps:
    Mitchell's
    P.160
    Proraso white

Plissoft Razorock and Rockwell are my go to. Figuring that out was the worst. 🤕

My biggest annoyance has been if I only shave WTG it looks like I haven’t shaved at all. The hair around my mouth is thick and dark while my skin is light.
It’s been so annoying that prior to DE shaving, I’d just pluck the hairs every day to appear clean shaven, otherwise it’d look like I had a goatee.
Now I’m trying to split the difference with XTG passes and a sensitive skin routine. Hardest part is just accepting the look of it. Jealous of people who can appear clean shaven with a WTG pass.

I prefer boar hair brush. I am not super sensitive but sometimes my skin is reactive to more aggressive blades and occasionally I get ingrowns on my neck. In my experience boar prevents those more. Not that badger doesn't work, but I just prefer a more exfoliant feel. I do 1 or two passes. And I do more cold to lukewarm water.
The one biggest thing I always use is a Pre shave.

thanks for the helpfull guide. ive got eczema, and this results in me being sensitive to alot of the chemicals in most shaving and skin care products, even if im not having any visible symptoms (most of the time). i cant use regular shaving creem, lotion, etc. I also shave my head which is more sensitive than my face. I've found that eucerin eczema lotion for babies is the best lotion for my sensitive skin, face or otherwise.

I fixed my issues with sensitive skin. I switched to Williams Mug soap. The slickness of Williams means I can shave over the same area again and even use a more aggressive Razor. I get BBS now with zero irritation. I'm not using Proraso anymore the slickness just isn't there. You have to keep reapplying it. With Williams you have residual slickness that holds up to multiple passes. I have similar results with Arko.
