How I'm Saving $9500 Insulating My DIY Shop Build

  • Today we are getting a big portion of the insulation done on my self built shop. We have done the majority of the work ourselves (everything but the concrete finishing). I originally intended on letting the pros do some spray foam insulation, but after some cost increases and the quotes I was getting back I just couldn't justify the expense. With the spray foam and by the time I paint the exposed spray foam I would be about $13,000 into the insulation. With the additional wood, the many rolls of insulation and the vapor barrier I will be about $3500 in materials. Not exactly a totally fair comparison since I will be doing all the work myself and the spray foam was with their labor included. But there isn't a great do it yourself option for spray foam as the equipment rig definitely makes it cost prohibitive. So by no means am I saying the price was out of line, just that I had the ability and time to go a different route where I could offset the cost with my labor instead.
    The building is a 30'x48' with 16' walls. R13 fiberglass insulation with kraft facing. 16" wide on the walls and 24" wide on the roof. All of it will then be covered with a double bubble radiant barrier for additional insulation value along with being the vapor barrier.
    I also installed polystyrene foam underneath the 7" concrete slab.

    Keep some of that insulation back, you’ll need it to sound proof the defender when you’ve finished restoring it! Wish we had some in ours!🤣

      Yeah, they are a bit of a tin can. We’ll hopefully be able to mitigate some of that.
      But I used every last bit of the stuff I bought haha.

    These R values are about three times what have in our houses in New Zealand!
    Mind you we dont get below zero celsius very often and our building code is a joke.
    Loving the LR content, Keep up the great work.

      I think our residential code calls for r38 in the ceiling so I’m behind that but it is a shop after all.
      But for instance we did see -17f last week which is -27c. The coldest I can remember was -25ish Fahrenheit or -32 Celsius. When I redo the house it will probably see r21 walls and r60 ceiling. If we get a stretch of teens below zero it starts soaking everything with cold and it gets real unpleasant. For a few weeks a year I start looking at properties in warmer climates haha.
      Appreciate you following along, it’ll be nice to getting back to working on the rigs without having to devote so much time on the shop itself (even though I enjoy that very much).

    Looking great! I need to do the roof in my shop as well. Settled in, watching the video while digesting some potato soup. Weather forecasting is calling for up to 6" here, so my skinny self is staying warm.

      Potato soup and inside sounds like the ticket to me. Are you getting the cold spell too?

      @derelict_wanderer 5 місяців тому

      @@LostCauseRanch Yep. Was originally forecast for 3-6 inches. We are currently at 7" and it's still coming down hard. Probably will have between 8 and 10 inches. For southern middle TN, that's quite a storm. Did get my old Wagoneer out and took the dog for a sleigh ride around the unsalted backroads before the second round started. Most likely will be staying mostly indoors til Wednesday. We have stuff for a slow cooker roast and also tomato soup and grilled paninis yet to fix.

    You should consider creating an airgap and air channel to remove the hot air to actually get some radiant benefits from that foil side (for help during the summer). If the radiant barrier is touching the insulation, it will conduct the heat... I'm in the south and I'm tackling a radiant barrier project as we speak. So, I understand that we have different considerations to tend to.

      That makes sense, I’m more concerned on the winter and heating aspect vs. the cooling side of it in our area. But I do still want to efficiently cook it in the summer as well.
      I did plan on having some “droops” in between the purlins on the roof so it would sag away and create some air gaps for a thermal break so it wouldn’t directly transfer the cold through it. So similar concept I guess. But I appreciate the input and never considered the summer aspects of that.

    Wow it’s looking amazing, what a mammoth task on your own especially as you are not that great with heights 🤔. Colour combination looks great also. I assume painting the floor is now going to have to wait until the snow has gone and the temperature rises, as the shop will need to be totally empty to do this job🤣 and parking the vehicles outside currently in not an option 🥶 Keep up the great working, looking forward to seeing the next phase. 👍😎

      It was time consuming that is for sure. But worth it to be able to continue to work in there over the next few months. I may be able to sneak in sealing the floor yet in the next couple months. Just have to split it in half and do one side at a time. As long as I don’t add anything dumb in there in the meantime haha.

      @@roverdogs_keithwhelchel Yes, why is a winter romp without a little snow. Our local snow run was canceled yesterday. Too cold and ironically too much snow, but that is justified because the spot becomes a mess for people trailering in their rigs and it would just be a day of winching around trucks and trailers.

      At one point I was paying a fair chunk monthly for 2000 square feet of offsite storage building for all my “don’t throw those away” things. Proud to say I’m down to just one 200 square foot storage unit full of G4 Discovery parts, otherwise pretty much everything is here at my mess of a shop and house. Baby steps haha.

    As a person who's been in the insulation and air sealing business for over 35 years, I can say your knowledge of insulation and thermal bridging is spot on, good job!
    I'm guessing that the cost of the DIY foam kits didn't work with the amount of square footage you had to cover?

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  5 місяців тому +1

      That’s good to know, even though I like to do a lot of the stuff myself I at least try and get a base amount of knowledge to not completely botch it.
      When I was calculating out the “Froth-Pak” style do it yourself kits it actually worked out to be just about the same in just materials as having the pros come in and do it right.

    "I should have built a bigger shop." No. Nope. Well, yes, but NO! You would probably just hoard more stuff in a bigger shop and still have the same problem with more junk to move around. 🙄
    Nice job, though. I'm glad you're getting this done even though the snow is already clobbering the Midwest.
    Now, I hope the roof to the house is holding up to all that snow. 🙏

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  5 місяців тому +1

      I feel you may be correct on that haha. Just a little bit of a hoarding problem around here. But it’s all good stuff I swear haha.
      So far the roof on the house is still there, fingers crossed, but no it has had quite a bit more snow on it in the past. But no leaks since repairing it.
