    The destruction of immense knowledge by religious zealots over the past 1000 plus years is unbelievable and saddening. Religion is a wonderful thing and good for the soul, but the use of it to control the masses and destroy knowledge is a terrible side affect

    • @XSilver_WaterX
      @XSilver_WaterX 6 місяців тому +1

      You don't need just religion to confused and excite the masses for easier slave control. People do it all the time because their minds are focused on other projects, like feeding the community or making sure your hardware won't break and accidentally kill someone?

    • @isoldam

      If you are talking about Christianity, there was no immense destruction of knowledge by religious zealots. In fact, the Catholic Church was one of the main institutions that saved and passed on knowledge. There are a lot of historically ignorant narratives floating around about religion that people really should stop repeating. The historian Tom Holland has written several excellent books about how Christianity shaped the world we inhabit now. There is a reason that modern science developed where and when it did.

      Unfortunately, comes to the body of knowledge of medicine, biology, anatomy that came from the part of the world that around 600s became predominantly Islamic, the author is correct.
      Copious books on medicine were brought to the Iberian Peninsula by the Moors - Muslims that inhabited territories now Spain. Many works (including Avicenna Ibn Sina’s works) were burnt by the Catholics, as the Muslims were pushed south and everything was being destroyed by Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile. This began in mid 1400s.
      Although some of the knowledge was preserved in trained physicians - but Jewish and Moorish physicians were prohibited to practice medicine. Initially Spanish Jewry was allowed to stay in Castile and Aragon on condition of becoming Catholics. And some accepted the new faith, while most left. Hence, the knowledge still preserved in the minds of practitioners was lost forever.
      Within a decade, even those Jewish families that practiced Catholicism became persecuted - some burnt at stakes and some escaped and for the next several centuries moved around Western Europe till mid 19th century. No books, no practitioners were left, and medicine as a science (as so many sciences) were thrown back - as anything that wasn’t shared by Rome or, rather, Vatican in the Middle Ages was perceived as magic and witchcraft and was persecuted and severely punished.
      This is not a dig against Christianity. It is a historic fact. Many learnt from it. But this kind of persecution continued for at least 2-2,5 centuries in Europe.
      Da Vinci research and some of his art was perceived inappropriate and some dangerous by Vatican. The only time when Da Vinci became welcome in Rome was right before he got an invitation to do some work for the French king. And that was the period, when one of the Medici’s family members became the Pope. Hence, I am sure you know this was the reason Da Vinci decided to leave Italy and stayed in France where he was given a home and could create without risks. Besides, he was already aged, and not so sure he would be able to run like he did earlier for safety between Florence, Milan, and Florence again, during the periods when Medici couldn’t protect them.
      I am sure you are familiar with Copernicus. His “trial” in Trent was famous. And such prominent Catholic figures as Spina and Tolosani worked hard to refute Copernicus’ work, failed. And then they simply reduced to blackmail and threats against Nicola Copernicus.
      Galileo Galilei was flat convicted of heresy because of his scientific work. They didn’t burn him (well, in 1633 burning was going out of trend /being sarcastic/), but Galilei spent the rest of his life locked in his home, prohibited any exchange of ideas in correspondence and in person with anyone.
      I wonder if we would ever know what is stored in Vatican archives. One this that I agree with you - Vatican collected and preserved quite a bit. However, only the works that were aligned with the policy of Vatican were released to be publicly available. If scientific work was not in agreement with the medieval period church dogma - it never saw the light of day. And opening it now - is to admit things were hidden for the sake of Cath politics and power of the Medieval Europe and on.
