I'm not sure that's fair to John. The Stern Show was just one of Stuttering John's successful stops along the way. John's been successful everywhere - but an $$$- divorce can really take the pyss out of you. One older dude who lives across the hall. Had two divorces, lost both homes - significant child support etc. He said he's still catching his breath from the second divorce, which was almost 2.5 decades ago. .
John was afraid to say that Don Buchwald (Howard’s, Robin’s, Gary’s, and at the time, John’s manager), berated and screamed at him for doing the record contract “behind his back”. Don represented John “as a favor to Howard“ and told John he wanted nothing to do with his band. John showed him up by getting the Atlantic deal and Buchwald freaked on him. That’s why John is petrified to tell the truth about why he’s upset about his deal.
He didn't want Don or Howard to kill his deal or berate him into not taking it. Believe me Howard's not happy at ANY of his workers doing something outside of his show.
John can translate the comedic visions of the superstars, i.e. the Stern's and the Leno's - i.e. the obnoxious interviewer on the Stern show who John played to the nth - John was unbelievable in that role - unstoppable. John's own humor is very cerebral -
What was hilarious is that the record company and MTV put a lot of money into his shitty album and promotion. Thanks to his association with the Stern Show. And they were treating Stuttering John like royalty. Even throwing him a release party.. And then reality kicked in when he had a signing at a record store and only 20 people showed up.. That's when everyone realized the album was going to be a bomb.
Record labels don’t care about talent they only care about sales. They figure Howard will promote the fuck out of this for us for free not realizing the dynamic between Howard and John. Howard promoted the album but even gives an obvious nudge that “hey this sucks”
