I always try to read the novels of each TechDweeb episode before he turns them into youtube videos. When people ask me if the book version of each video is better, I tell them that they're both perfect.
this brings me back to around 2007-2008, when i used my MP4 player to read books. it was a crappy Chinese mp4 player, with about 2 inch screen, could have been 1.8" even, and it had a text reader. yeah, not an ebook reader, a text reader. it supported only txt files and had zero settings. no font size. no font face. it used some crappy monospace (i think) font with ridiculously thin letters even for the screen size. and didn't even transition words on the next row properly, it just splits them whenever it wanted to. damn it was a nightmare to read on that thing... and i loved it. i must have read more books for that year using it, compared to the previous two three years combined.

You've forgot to mention "sel+L2 means brightness down, sel+R2 is brightness up" for Ebook reader (pixel reader) on miyoo mini on onion os. Dragon Lance serie is one of my favorite, respect bro. PS My first electronic book reader was Palm m105. Experienced user 😊
This is definitely my kind of nerdy nonsense. I thought I was the only one that was thinking about doing something like this. Thank you for the awesome video!
definitely, the playdate is my favorite way to read books. lives in my pocket, no backlight so easy on the eyes, looks even better outdoors than indoors, crank-to-scroll is surprisingly great, nice crisp screen, all-day battery life. i've read 8 books on it so far this year and it's rekindled my reading habit.
in a world of mundane videos which are so the same chatgpt couldve made them, this was nice. I am still yet to get me a retro handheld and will definitely finish reading dune on it if i can ever get one.
This sounds super fun! I love that you make this kind of videos that may not perform amazingly but you clearly have an interest in the topic. I hope you always make content this way TD!
I read a bunch of books on my old Palmpilot, and by that standard, the Miyoo Mini is quite luxurious. These days though, I mostly use CoolReader (text) and Kotatsu (manga/webtoons) on my phone, and a bit of EBookDroid (PDF/CBR). There's a ton of good stuff, but if you ever decide you really want to sink your teeth into something substantial, Worm by Wildbow is free and has intelligently written characters. I also was laugh-out-loud-in-public entertained by Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, because it was consistently fun all the way through. Anyway, just a couple ideas if you're ever bored.
I’ve always overlooked this feature till I saw this video and decided to give it a try Turns out it’s quite comfort to read and the small amount of text in the screen while I keep scrolling helps my reading despite my ADHD Thanks for the tip! Greetings from Brazil!
As far as reading books, i don't really read a whole lot of books. I've only read like two books completely all the way through, but I love writing. The movies are more of my storytelling medium though
I never really thought of reading in the way that you explained it in the first part of the video. I love reading anyways, but I’ll try to keep that thought process in the back of my mind more when I read to try and have even more fun!
I probably should have mentioned this before, but I've never actually seen a T.Dweeb video. I only read the transcripts. On my retro handheld little Gameboy toy.
Ok, that's it! I'm subscribing! Are you happy now! The fact that I can read at work and hide my miyoo mini in the palm of my hand and not look suspicious when the boss comes by, is my exact need. Thanks TeckDweeb.
I'm not sure I would read an entire book on this tiny screen. I uploaded an entire movie on mine though... Worked surprisingly well! It doesn't support all codecs and you have to reduce the resolution for it to be smooth but it's pretty cool. It's incredible what you can do with those tiny things.
I think it was your onion os video after which i installed it on my miyoo mini plus. Now i have the HP books in english and a few books from Project Gutenberg in german, like „Versuche über Pflanzenhybride“ by Gregor Johann Mendel. It’s very comfy reading on the Bus or in a waiting room. Thank you so much ❤
Learn then my dude, tis never too late!!! If you have a hard time physically reading, I heard two days ago some faunts are better for dyslexia than others. Which ones.... I forgot.
It’s fun to see the process on how to get more use out of the miyoo and anbernic devices! If you have the interest, it would be fun to see how videos and episodes of shows could be put on these. I’d love to learn how to make my flipzizzle into a portable tv, book, and gaming device lol
Your videos on retrohandhelds as media devices have been really, really edifying to me. When I first got my xxsp, I thought it would be fun to load it up with some nostalgic cartoons, movies, and books alongside the roms, but then I just discovered it really was just extremely convenient to have a portable media device that wasn't my phone. My big gripe (on MuOS) right now is that it just isn't great at being a music player, and that the movie player is a bit underbaked, but I also just wish there was some way to read kindle files on these things. I've spent decades building up a kindle library, and the idea of breaking the DRM (for those books old enough that it's even possible), pirating additional copies, or just buying them again in epub format just sounds exhausting. if portmaster could bring over the app or something, that would be the dream (and audible too, as long as I'm dreaming).
I suggest Star Wars or Star Trek audiobooks for this hand held, it is the same size as the walkman, these 2 frachises have audio books with awesome voice actors and sound efects that emerse you in the story, star wars audio books have soundtracks, sound effects for battles multiple actors, they are extremely emersive and there are over 100 audiobooks availabe, same for Star Trek, my personal favorite is Star Trek 34th rule of aquisition, narated and co writen by Armin Shimerman (Quark ftom DS9)
Before the age of emulator handhelds, I learned that the nerds of the past were also drawn to read books on their low-powered Nintendos. In seeking to learn this arcane nerdy art, I discovered my favorite ebook reader for underpowered handhelds: Makebook Gameboy Book Reader by Pat Crowe. It comes as an old Windows utility that accepts a book in .txt format and converts it to either a Gameboy or Gameboy Advance self-contained ebook reader. The features are surprisingly nice, especially for the GBA version. You get different color options, the ability to seek by line, page, chapter, or book, automatically save your place, add bookmarks, and even embed simple images and midi tracks. The nerds of the past weren't afraid to work hard, since it took time and to go through a book and tag the chapters or add advanced features. But the results were really nice, and can be enjoyed even if you're using a handheld without a dedicated book reader application.
Really cool and fun video! Ebooks on a handheld - it does indeed look fun with the text that can be made nice and big! TechDweeb is showing us that these devices are actually made in Switzerland... even though they're made in China.
Haha I’m reading mistborn on my kindle scribe right now, finished the first book. Idk if my eyes could handle reading on my miyoo mini but I do like having shows, games and books all on one device. My miyoo mini is like my bunker device, my doomsday device, loaded with all I need for entertainment. It’s gotten me through a few winter storms and power outages when my switch, steam deck and phone died.
yep. my ereader can play retro games. i tried only gb games since they are black/white anyway. kind of hard to control with onscreen buttons tho. i bet if i connect a bluetooth controller it would be better, but never did it. i use it only when i'm at the beach or something, and i don't feel like reading.

I used to read books on a Palm Pilot on the go... 160x160pixels... Then I found an old HP Jornada 720, and used that for a while. I had an e-reader app on my Nokia E61 as well. This video brought back memories...
heads up, CBR/CBZ are just .rar/.zip files full of images following some sequence with a fancy extension. any software that can unpack archives and/or convert a bank of images to pdf can perform the same task, locally, and save you the upload times for some of the larger comic books
Ok good morning! First, I love your work so much. You really bring a lot to the table and I appreciate that. I’m glad to see your following grow and I love the premise of what you do. I just watched your miyoo mini love letter video and you asked what my favorite comfort device was. I know you’re a handheld nut, so I think you’d appreciate this one, the Boox Palma. It’s a pocket friendly E-paper device. The ereader community and the emulator community have some connective tissue believe it or not, and that’s Koreader. It’s an open source ereader software supported by all popular e ink devices that’s super customizable. Think of it like RetroArch for books. It’s definitely something to check out. Have a great week!!
Also the pirate book recommendation is On Strange Tides by Tim Powers. It’s pirates, adventure, and a little fantasy all bundled into one. I haven’t read many pirate books but this one stood out.
i'll let you in on a little secret. i never watch any of your videos, i just download the .srt subtitle file and read that instead. i agree about it being fun to read and it's usually better in your brain than the movie, but you lost me at "purple monkey dishwasher" - honestly, it got pretty absurd at times
thanx mr dweeb:) when i first got my miyo mini i ended up watching your videos to convince myself. then when i found out you could read on it, the game was changed and i came back to comment on a older video :) thanx for everything
It's a YA series, but I recommend The Edge Chronicles as it heavily involves space pirates. I first started reading it as a child when my mum bought it for me, but reading it now as an adult I'm surprised at how dark the books can get.
I read all of A Song of Ice and Fire on my psp. I bought the ebooks and converted them to images and read through them like a slideshow. It was actually pretty good and worked very well.
TD, this video - combined with Adin's community post about ideas for future content made me think: you guys should have a retro game+book club! That's a series in itself!
A .CBR is just a renamed .zip file, as long as each image is in numerical order you can make your own .CBR by just changing the .ZIP extension. The only ting that would concern me is if the ebook reader has support for rich text. Like I've seen some that drops all of the formatting, gets rid of bold/italic text and even misses indents and line breaks. Things like that can really ruin your reading experience, but at least I'm curious enough now to see what it's like. I've been reading web novels lately, so any option to read more is nice.
Great video! I just got my first handheld for emulating my old games and consoles (RG556) and I’m having a ton of fun with the things it can do. Guess I need to add this to the list, especially since my wife has taken over my kindle.
this will actually take me back to a weird time sometime around 2003-2004 in college when i had a Creative Zen Vision mp3 player and used a funky program to convert books into a series of image files to read on it 😆 what a time to be alive it is
Having aphantasia, I'm getting really jealous when you describe how your brain can render all the book imagery in 8K. I just see words on the page. I'm so envious of your amazing brain images.
I used to do this with my phone but never put the time in chasing down the kind of collection I'd like - here's to trying again! I am a Clive Barker / H.P. Lovecraft kinda guy, tis the season to read some horror anyway so here goes! Cheers!
The problem with reading on a device that has games: "Well, I read for about 20 minutes, maybe I'll take a little break... As a treat... [2 hours of "A Link to the Past" later...]
I love reading on the ereaders I have but they're usually like 6 or 7 inches. I cant imagine trying to read on an lcd and a small one at that for more than 30 minutes. My eyes would be suffering.😂 Fun video though, techdweeb.
I once imagined a Balrog wearing button fly jeans. It was an hour or so after reading Gandalf's Balrog battle scene for the umpteenth time. By then, I'd already lost count of how many times I'd read that series, so I knew Gandalf was gonna be just fine. Oh, and the Balrog in my head looked pretty darn dashing in those Levis.
Conversely, it’s pretty easy to get emulators on most ereaders. And playing GB games on an ereader looks really good and nostalgic! I’ve done it with a yotaphone, a nook, and a moaan inkpalm 5.
Yes reading is for nerds but i'm proud to be a nerd. I used to read romantic novels but could never get past the first chapter for some reason so I gave up. What about battery life when reading books on a handheld? Does it last longer than playing an 8 or 16 bit game for instance?
Dude, check out LeGuin's a wizard of earthsea series, it's an absolute 100% MUST READ and each book is actually very short, like finish in a day short. Best fantasy series ever.
I wish there was some way that you could read a book paragraph by paragraph out loud. I remember using a program to read book out loud but the problem was that it went page by page so if you ever wanted to stop it you had to restart the entire page which was annoying. I once was reading something in Microsoft Word using one of the new versions that has a text to speech and wherever you put your cursor it would start at the beginning of that particular word which was super awesome 10 out of 10. I can't do the laundry while I'm reading a book but if I'm listening to a book I can.
Who else had tears on their pillows because you go to bed wishing TechDweeb would DM you in a DnD campaign in the Canadian forests... My Paladin, Guts Lightblaster, and his "friend," ex-thief, elven babe with green eyes and strawberry hair, Beth, have no life goals of ridding evil Lichs and demons of hell spawn i.e. responsible grownups who laugh at you for wanting to play rpg as an adult.... My "gf" Beth will get jealous but idc, i love you TechDweeb... I think of you reading, Robert Jordan's, The Wheel of Time series... 😢 See you after Tarmon Gai'don, 😢
My recommendation - Don't start the Kingkiller Chronicles. I've waited for almost a decade now for the third book and I don't expect to see the third book anytime soon, or ever really. Actually, same with Gentlemen Bastards as well. I don't think either of the authors of these books will ever release the next book in their series. At least, GRRM gave us Elden Ring.
I want an offline device that can handle different media types. When I get a new phone next year, I was going to demote my current phone to serve that purpose. I have been pricing some e-ink tablets, but there is something cool about doing this on my Miyoo Mini+.
Personally I like the ebook readers that have e-ink and have the form factor of a cell phone such as the Hisense touch. That said make sure to be careful what apps you use on it. When in doubt sideload your books after you've removed the DRM from them I would not trust the device with my Kindle app etc.
when i was a kid i used my 3DS consoles for non-gaming smart-device stuff instead of a phone… doing things like this on the miyoo mini reminds me of that
Definitely not for me. However, many moons ago I purchased a Kindle, and that launched me from not reading to completing several books including The Dark Tower series. Sadly I moved onto other pursuits while in the middle of Band of Brothers (which I never finished). If I were to go back to reading, I'd definitely dust off and charge my Kindle.
You said you'd link to the reading video but it's not there. 😞Was really looking forward to nailing down this reading thing so I could implement these tools you speak of.
Not really pertinent, the kind of people who use a specialized handheld instead of their phone for gaming are more likely to use an eReader, InkPad 3 does it for me.
Ya I got the boox onyx Palma due to the pocketable size and Android system, due to the fact I got non Kindle books off humble bundle over the years, and I LOVE IT. Looks like a phone in it's case so I look like a fellow Tik Tok addict, but I'm reading mwahahahahaaa!
Tech dweeb, where do you get your video files to watch shows on the miyoo mini? I own a bunch of digital shows through Amazon but because of drm I can't get them on my device.
Hi TechDweeb, have you tried loading game manuals onto OnionOS? Supposedly you can open the manual through the GLO menu, and then open it up like your ebooks. But I have one really stubborn file that refuses to show up there no matter how hard I try. I would love to see a tutorial if you could!
@@TechDweeb The Name of The Wind is still the best writing I have read in modern fiction. Rothfuss has a way of making poetry with his prose I find fascinating. GRR Martin gets close, but makes up for it with his incredible world building. He also suffers from the same trouble getting the series done Rothfuss has, however.

Illuminated screen: 71mm x 53mm
the best way to read is in on the playdate as you can scroll vertically with the crank.
Oooh I could get behind that
definitely, the playdate is my favorite way to read books. lives in my pocket, no backlight so easy on the eyes, looks even better outdoors than indoors, crank-to-scroll is surprisingly great, nice crisp screen, all-day battery life. i've read 8 books on it so far this year and it's rekindled my reading habit.

I used to read for fun. I stopped reading for some reason or other. I need to get back into it
this will actually take me back to a weird time sometime around 2003-2004 in college when i had a Creative Zen Vision mp3 player and used a funky program to convert books into a series of image files to read on it 😆 what a time to be alive it is
Having aphantasia, I'm getting really jealous when you describe how your brain can render all the book imagery in 8K.
Cheers!
Looks like you already read my recs. I love Joe Abercrombie and the Locke Lamora stuff.
this is pretty cool! If game designers made book tech
My eyes would be suffering.😂
Fun video though, techdweeb.
Good book collection mate
I love watching you. Hilarious. It's like a useful big bang theory.
Yes reading is for nerds but i'm proud to be a nerd. I used to read romantic novels but could never get past the first chapter for some reason so I gave up. What about battery life when reading books on a handheld? Does it last longer than playing an 8 or 16 bit game for instance?
Battery life is pretty much as minimal as you can get. Depending on the screen brightness you should expect around 8+ hours
Dude, check out LeGuin's a wizard of earthsea series, it's an absolute 100% MUST READ and each book is actually very short, like finish in a day short. Best fantasy series ever.
Reading is also just good for your brain. Ebooks have made it easier for me to read a lot more and I love it.
Seen the Stormlight Archives in there. This man has good taste in books too.
Good to see another Abercrombie fan. How is the battery life when reading on the MM+?
See you after Tarmon Gai'don, 😢
Humble Bundle is another great place to find books for your digital collection. Pretty great sets of books for great deals.
Another great video! You know what would be fun? A video about converting old VHS and DVD movies to the Miyoo Mini!😁
Thank you for making this video! I actually commented on one of your videos yesterday asking if your eyes get tired after reading on this thing.
I like reading :D
My recommendation - Don't start the Kingkiller Chronicles. I've waited for almost a decade now for the third book and I don't expect to see the third book anytime soon, or ever really. Actually, same with Gentlemen Bastards as well. I don't think either of the authors of these books will ever release the next book in their series. At least, GRRM gave us Elden Ring.
Yeah, I stopped recommending "the name of the wind" forever ago.
Yeah I dont expect that series to ever get finished like song of ice and fire.
I want an offline device that can handle different media types. When I get a new phone next year, I was going to demote my current phone to serve that purpose. I have been pricing some e-ink tablets, but there is something cool about doing this on my Miyoo Mini+.
I would only recommend looking at ebooks on these devices if.you want to have a splitting headache.
What?! New Lock Lamora book? Sorry if spelling is off, Ive done that series in audiobook
You said you'd link to the reading video but it's not there. 😞Was really looking forward to nailing down this reading thing so I could implement these tools you speak of.
Reminds me of the Dingoo Days. 😌
I tried using epub on my anbernic sp, but it doesn't work for me, for some reason.. So I just stick to moon reader+ on my tablet
Oh, I get it now. You wanted to post a spooky Halloween horror story! Reading a book! Spooky
Seawolf by Jack London is a classic pirate book!
I like reading. This might be the beginning of my journey to discover more fun ways to read.
I usually read on a kobo libra 2 , best ereader I've ever used. Sometimes I used my old kindle paperwhite though, since they're a bit smaller.
If you like adventure you should definitely read The Thief Lord.
Tech dweeb, where do you get your video files to watch shows on the miyoo mini? I own a bunch of digital shows through Amazon but because of drm I can't get them on my device.
🏴☠️
Hi TechDweeb, have you tried loading game manuals onto OnionOS? Supposedly you can open the manual through the GLO menu, and then open it up like your ebooks. But I have one really stubborn file that refuses to show up there no matter how hard I try. I would love to see a tutorial if you could!
Thanks, I read on my Anbernic 351V now.
Very cool! 😎 what about digital comics?? 🤔🤓 does pocketbook read those well too?
Oh! Didn’t get far enough lol so if can only be pdf?
“The Kingkiller Chronicles, which I’m super excited to start”
I hope you aren’t as excited to finish them 😬
I felt this in my soul. I've been waiting years. And what was with book two?
Add it to the list of series I'm waiting for the next book of
@@TechDweeb The Name of The Wind is still the best writing I have read in modern fiction. Rothfuss has a way of making poetry with his prose I find fascinating. GRR Martin gets close, but makes up for it with his incredible world building. He also suffers from the same trouble getting the series done Rothfuss has, however.
My mom in 90s:
-Why wouldn't you rather read a book, than play these stupid videogame consoles.
Me in 2024:
Books are heavy and take up a lot of space.
I'd have digital books on my smartwatch...if I wore one. Another fun way to consume written words, I'm totally in, and I get keep my lunch money!
I love your description of imagination. Unfortuntely as someone with Aphantasia, my badass gaming PC doesn't have a graphics card installed. 😭
