Kyai Najib, the current principle of the school said that pesantren Raudlatul Ulum emphasizes its education on intellectual quotient as well as righteous deeds. For the academic achievement, a santri must pass Munaqosyah examination, memorize juz amma, get above minimum grade points. If they fail, they must take a failed class again in the following year.
In this Pesantren, memorizing certain lessons is decisive whether or not a student can go to the next grade. Ibtida'iyyah students must have memorized Al-nahwu al-wadlih and al-amtsilat at-tashrifiyyah before they can continue to Tsanawiyah. For tsanawiyyah students must memorize 1000 bait of Alfiyyah ibnu Malik, while for Aliyah students must memorize 525 bait matan al-qowa'idul fiqhiyyah. The tradition of memorization is crucial in Kitab Kuning comprehension. The memorization is also a method to hone students’ intelligence.
Pondok Pesantren Raudlatul Ulum applies “integrated educational system”, where it combines national curriculum with local curriculum, al-Ulum al-Diniyyah. Besides it applies both traditional and modern system. This Pesantren has various proper facilities to support students’ learning activities such as Language laboratory, IT lab which is completed by computers, natural science lab, Sewing lab, Library, Marching band, etc.
There are two traditional teachings used here, Bandongan and Sorogan. Bandongan is a method where kyai plays active role in teaching, while Sorogan is students’ turn to play active role. By Sorogan, students’ skill in reading kitab kuning is expected to be improved. It is on reading kitab kuning and mastering Arabic language that this pesantren has an edge.
