He's legitimately not though, it started as black dragons because the original 3 are literally black dragons, first class dangerous monster yes, black dragon no
I swear when Safi opened its eye I thought it was going to monologue about taking Wyverian gold and burn down Astera while saying "I am bio-energy. I. Am. Death!"
I appreciate how Iceborne’s three first-classes each invoked both an immediate kill condition and an emphasised weakness. It highlighted both how much more dangerous they were whilst still affirming their mortality. Hopefully Dire Miralis is next to get a revamp, be 6th Gen’s superboss.
It never sits right with me that Dhalamadur isnt considered a Black Dragon. Seeming as its destructive capibilities should be higher than any other Black Dragon
Technically it is. In the lore it's referred (along other titles) as the black mountain serpent. It is also stated that it can destroy entire regions just by moving, making forest and mountains disappear, producing earthquakes and inundations when moving in the ocean, all this would obviously destroy entire cities. Then why it's not considered a black dragon? Literally because it's a serpent. Devs have declared that the "secret" final monsters of each game is created to be a "black dragon" level threat. Let's take for example Akantor, it is stated to fight crimson fatalis just for territory, but it's actually a flying wyvern due to his body, so it is stronger than a regular fatalis. Also Safi was created to be a black dragon but Devs said in a interview that they change his color only because they wanted to add variety and they thought red was cool, as funny as it sounds
@@daviddelapazgil7274 the "secret" end of story bosses as black dragon level threats make sense. Seeming how Shara Ishvalda was shaking the entire New World by moving underground and also the sheer power we see displayed by Giasmagorm in his fight too.
@@daviddelapazgil7274they made Safi red color because most strong looking designs in MH tends to be black (this probably include Dalamadur and Gogmazios) and also to show the visibility of the remnants back when it was still a Xeno'Jiva.
There's a bit of misinformation to disseminate, so let's go over it all: - While "Black Dragon" is applicable, their true shared group is *Forbidden Monsters* in reference to how their members never had info given about them in marketing prior to the 5th generation - The Guild at large never burned records on the Forbidden Monsters, it was a small group within it that only did so for the records on Alatreon - Safi'jiiva isn't a Black Dragon or Forbidden Monster, but an entirely new one known as the "Red Dragon" to contrast Fatalis and the Black Dragons - "White" Fatalis is officially known as *Old Fatalis* nowadays
The term "Forbidden Dragon" is not a term used in the actual in-world setting of MH. That was a term used by the dev team to specify a group of monsters (the Black Dragons) that they are literally forbidden from talking about under any capacity in any of their promo materials. This was covered by Gaijinhunter's Forbidden Monsters video which covers the developers notes on the subject hence why I never used the term here as its a Developer Terminology, not one that's actually used in the game's lore. As for the burning of records, the Third Fleet Master says in Iceborne they burnt records because they "Feared the Old Gods" (plural) which is what they also referred to the other Black Dragons (Dire Miralis is also considered a devil as well) The Safi'jiiva aspect is something I also covered in an old video: Old Black Dragon vs New Red Dragon. This was originally just a hypothesis because we didn't know why Alatreon entered the New World until the Dive Into Iceborne Book released (which I can grab the info from if needed), that said Safi'jiiva's "presumed" status is a Fandom thing, I grabbed the info I had of how Safi is meant to be an opposite of Fatalis right off the book (with Safi actually having an original Black Dragon design) which makes it in the Black Dragon category as this category doesn't necessarily mean the dragon itself is black in colour, being linked to other Black Dragons puts them in the group as they are known under the Dangerous First Class monsters name as well Old Fatalis name has been around since MH2, both White and Old Fatalis have been used for ages
@@ChronoPinoyXThe ingame terminology used for them and many other such monsters like Dala, Amatsu or Narwa, is "Calamity Class Elder Dragon". It was used within Rise a few times and is the highest official canon threat level. In Iceborne the Third Fleet Master tells us that a group of weird people came up to her telling her to fear the old gods. They're not the guild, they're the group that's hidden within the guild. The guild would like nothing more than to collect as much knowledge about Alatreon as possible. Those robed people are against it. Safi is Calamity Class.
hopefully not because fighting a dragon that just stands in place while swiping its claws and trying to bite you is boring. Plus his super ultimate attack can be avoided by simply standing behind a little rock.
I hope we continue to get a balance of reimagined and original monsters in 6th gen, including black dragons. I loved that we got not only Alatreon... not only Fatalis, but Safijiiva. A completely original monster of such immense power. I'd love to see Dire Miralis get a second chance, but I'd love to see new designs even more.
They're not called Black Dragons. Those are officially known as Forbidden Monsters. There is only ONE "Legendary Black Dragon" and that's Fatalis. The others only have Black Dragon in their title because they were mistaken for Fatalis. Dangerous First Class is a fan made term. The games and books never called them that. The only official classification is "Calamity Class Elder Dragon" which is the highest official class. It also includes the likes of Narwa, the Morahns, Dalamadur, Amatsu, Gaismagorm and other such monsters.
First Class Dangerous is an official term, people just use it wrong. In Monster Hunter Tri they call Alatreon a First Class Dangerous monster, but Alatreon is pretty explicitly the weakest of the forbidden monsters so this “tier” barely means anything.
Love Fatalis man. Fighting him in the first game and mhw always felt like fighting the very pinnacle of everything. Have always wanted to fight white and crimson. Hopefully one of thosr will make it into wilds.
Next MH should make the appearance of the "girl in the white robe" or the "scarlet mystery man" because they gave us the most sus quests in old monster hunter games and that includes the Forbidden Monsters.
My favorite part of the black dragon lore is that Alatreon is a complete outlier even there. I believe Dire Miralis was classified as a black dragon due to some perceived relation with Fatalis(same skeleton, and Fatalis and Miralis are similar in terms of naming convention). But then, there’s Alatreon, who’s just… really, absurdly destructive. He popped up on scene, was so cataclysmic that the guild went “oh fuck” and branded him a forbidden god.
I wonder what category Gaismagorm and Shara Ishvalda fall under. Of course Elder Dragon, but they seen maybe on par with some of the Forbidden Monsters
My biggest MonHun headcanon is that there are a series of ultradragons called red dragons, and are very much like black dragons but instead of focusing on death they focus on life. Where black dragons are all about destruction and the falling of life, red dragons are all about renewal and the cycle of life. I think that Safi’Jiiva is the first recorded red dragon, and that Gaismagorm might be one as well. They’re both focused on recycling and destruction moving upwards, and it makes them very, very different foes from black dragons.
Safi’s reasoning for needing to be killed was because it’s existence drains the life energy of everything around it, leaving it a barren wasteland. That doesn’t really help a cycle and seems pretty destructive
Just an addition to specify things a little bit more. Technically speaking the concept of black dragons its a fan invention made by the existence of fatalis, alatreon and dire miralis for the mere motive of being black colored. The only moment in MH history where devs have used this therm was in a interview where they specified that safi was designed originally to be black coloured but they made him red to contrast with fatalis because they also wanted to be his contrapart, but they are equivalent in therms of power. In reality most "final secret monsters" are made to be a "black dragon threat level", the problem here is that a lot of people have romanticised fatalis and the black dragon category a lot. They usually use the history of how a fatalis destroyed Schrade to determine his power but keep in mind one thing, as impresive as it could sound, it only consist on destroying one single region and we have the same examples with other monsters. Is stated that Dalamadur can vanish entire mountains and cities just by moving, Amatsu can pull entire forests to the sky just by being there, a ceadeus youngling who was compared to a kid who is still growing his teeth can produce massive earthquakes, even Akantor have notes referencing that it doesn't have any natural predators and his only threat are Crimson Fatalis, who fights him only for territory. The only ones who are not that powerful are maybe Gogmazios and probably some other monsters who I can't remember right now. We need to remember that the answer to why other monsters doesn't attack cities at that scale like fatalis did it's literally stated in the lore. Normally none monster would attack any city on purpose unless it have a very specific motive and fatalis motive was because white fatalis commanded him to do it during the great old war, because humans where a threat to the ecosystem due to overhunting and colonization. The same occured with Safi for example, Alatreon went to the new world because he was also a threat to the global ecosystem.
It's the older lore yes, but since we don't have any information about why fatalis was in the castle in iceborne we can only attach to this information until something new comes up. Anyway, supposedly, the only retcon we had recently was the confirmation about us killing fatalis in older games being non canonical and being the one in iceborne the first canon fatalis killed. If you are curious this comes from the great old war history, basically humans were too broken and started to overhunt monsters, due to this the strongest monsters made an alliance and fought back organised against humans. The leader of this group was white fatalis. At one moment humans made an amalgamation of monsters and mechanical parts called the equal dragon weapon. This aberration was so powerful that it was necessary for white fatalis to fight it, being successful at destroying it but getting injured at the process. Then, some strong monsters were sent to different powerful human countries to destroy them, monsters like fatalis and probably alatreon as we saw in iceborne new lore. The first fatalis sent to Schrade failed his attack and fled to recover, but white fatalis sent another one, the one we fought later on, the first fatalis felt betrayed and retired to a volcano core transforming into a stronger crimson fatalis variant. These monsters are known right now as "forbidden monsters" because nobody has seen them since the old war, so who knows if there are more monsters who participate in this war. There are some theories about these powerful monsters not showing up in recent times being for example that they are still recovering from the war or that they decided to not intervene with humans until it is necessary again but these are just theories.
@@daviddelapazgil7274While yes technically the only retcon was that Fatalis was never fought until world, that’s mostly because the whole “Equal Dragon Weapon” thing is a scrapped concept from the first game that never made it in, with the Dragon War also falling to that category as well.
So dalamadur and gogamzios not in the list? One is a snake that makes everest look like a ant hill for it to how big it is And the other spits oil that become nukes at will with plasma beams.
Small Detail: White Fatalis is often compared to a God, but Alatreon has a nickname that implies he is above even White Fatalis (in fact he is according to MHW ecology) and is the nickname of "The Dragon that makes the Gods tremble"
A nigh unkillable exploding tar dragon who shook off a dragonator and wore it like a decoration. The same kind of dragonater used to tear into monsters like white fatalis

6:33 I hope they really hammer home the concept of creating life with a black dragon one day, like imagine if white fatalis just starting creating normal fatali
I hope if white fatalis is ever remade, he straight up bends reality, because if he can make an eclipse portal he should be out here making (tiny) black holes and changing the sky with every move
isn't safi a elder dragon. I'm pretty sure they said he's the teen version of xeno and the adult would possibly be able to be classified as a black dragon

Sigh. This is why this community is in a mess of misinformation. Black dragons are not a thing and never have been. First of all they were called forbidden monsters which consisted of (fatalis alatreon and dire miralis). This was not a power class just final bosses that were not ever advertised. After the 15th anniversary forbidden monsters were done away with. In terms of power and tiering they are all calamity class elder dragons in which all final bosses consist of. So every final boss like giasmagorm amatsu and shara are on the same tier as "black dragons". The misinformation has to stop and youtubers need to be the ones to do it

Why isnt zorah magdaros on the list? His energy created a hole ecosystem and he has also massive destructive abilities, tho he doesn't use it that much
Despite the Zorah Magdaros being known to potentially cause mass destruction if it ever ended up dying, it's a case very similar to a volcano erupting. Zorahs aren't inherently destructive by nature, Black Dragons are. Black Dragons purposely cause destruction hence they are considered genuinely "evil" by many, Zorah Magdaros actually promote life by releasing bioenergy to nature upon death to promote new life, they just need to do it in a safe place as opposed to an already existing ecosystem (Guiding Lands is likely a case of a dead Zorah becoming a new region)
In simple version of chrono reply think of zorah like one of the versions of godzilla it doesn't care where it's going and is only dangerous to those who stand in its way by mistake or if you do something that makes it want to attack you

@elk3407 did i strike a nerve? I'm only stating facts. Until capcom gives it the actual title of black dragon to safi he shouldn't be on the list even if he's "rival" to fatalis. Like i said, merphistophelin would've been a better pick since it's an actual black dragon.
@elk3407 Yeah, it's more of a fan thing than anything else, and the person who made the video should retitled it to just first-class monsters rather than blackdragons.
Yup, its title isnt Black Dragon, it is Red Dragon. It is around equal to the likes of Fatalis, Dalamadur, Amatsu, Narwa, etc. because all of them are Calamity Class Elder Dragons which is the highest classification of Elder Dragon there officially is. It's stated directly in Rise before/after one of the Narwa hunts.

this is from the lorebook A Black Dragon whose name is left in legend as the threat that destroyed a country. What's the truth of history handed down as a legend? Where does it appear from, what kind of creature is it, and for what? It's hard for me to believe that it lives in Castle Schrade. I wonder if it transcends time and space and puts itself in a distortion. It's hard for me to believe it, but I've heard some outlandish rumours about someone suggesting a connection to another world somewhere in the desert. However, if a similar event were to occur in Schrade, the more I thought about it, the deeper my devotion would become. With the appearance of the Black Dragon, the world line where it was repelled from, and the possibility of creating a world line that couldn't be achieved... Assuming the existence of a parallel world that's different from historical facts, it makes sense to me that it's a fairy tale. I would also like to consider the reason why it's related to Humans. Safi is not Black Dragon. It doesn't have the same power as fatalis. He just said that he was a rival to fatalis in design. Of course, safi is likely to grow, but it will still be difficult to overcome Albatrion.
The game devs specifically said Safi isn’t a black dragon. He was originally going to be a black dragon but they decided a new gen deserved a new color. So while Safi is a first class monster, he’s actually a red dragon. Not a black dragon. Developer statement; “Safi’jiiva is designed as the equal/counterpart/rival of Fatalis. They wanted to make another Siege fight where you could cooperate with other players, and came up with the idea of depleting energy levels. In terms of design, they wanted to make an equal of Fatalis, while also giving the surprise that “this is what Xeno’jiiva will look like as an adult!”. When they design monsters that look really strong, they tend to end up black-colored, so they made Safi’jiiva red instead to change things up. They wanted it to look like a simple dragon rather than a very original creature design.”
Quite different from this.. it doesn't state any equal/counterpart thing. (PRODUCTION NOTE - Kaname Fujioka) In "MHW:IB" as well, I wanted to include a new Siege with 16 players. Therefore, Kulve Taroth and he changed their minds, skipped the preparation stage of collecting traces, and implemented it until they cooperated only in battle. However, I didn't like the fact that you can only play with people who are good at it, so I used depleting the earth vein energy and let them go to the deepest part, so even if you didn't fight directly, you could hurt them or throw them out their breath. The system allows each player to contribute, even if it's just by letting them play. The reason we put it in at the time was that we wanted to provide end content that would change the perspective of the player, such as Awakening weapons, rather than just collecting materials. In designing it, I wanted to create the surprise of "This is what Xeno'jiiva looks like when it's grown up". but at the same time, I wanted it to be The Dragon, the rival of Fatalis. However, when it comes to strong-looking designs, it tends to be a black colour, so instead, he decided to try a different colour that can be described in one word, and he took on the challenge of creating art from the word Red Dragon. I made it so that you can see her faintly, and you can feel the remnants of her from the days of Xeno'jiiva. So, rather than originality, he's aiming for a simple dragon statue of her.
@@davetolentino8973 So you got the direct translation? Nice. Yeah the equal/counterpart/rival was because the translation I used wasn’t too sure about which they used. Either way, Safi is a rival to Fatalis, and is not a black dragon by design purposes. Thanks man.
@@zorro8027 no problem..Fatalis wasn't planned for Iceborne anyway so instead they created a large dragon that looks like a stereotypical dragon like Fatalis so he's a rival by design, lorewise Safi's rival is Alatreon.

safii's a special case, he has the power of a black dragon for sure but isn't categorised as one, he's instead refered to as a red dragon, the difference is negligeable however there's one thing safi has that the other elders and black dragons don't, it's complete control of bio energy which kindda relates to dragon energy, but it's also why it is weak to it, now bio energy is kindda just the "essence of wyverns and dragons that died" and is a bit BS overall, but it's cool to see a monster able to fully take advantage of it, might be able to tank a fatalis though the matchup would depend on if the environment is rich in energy or not
Safi isn't a black dragon, he's a first class hazard monster but not considered as a black dragon (just like Disufiroa and Mephistorphellin from MH Frontier and Online).
aside from Savi Jiva the Red Dragon, I'm kinda disappointed that no other titled Black Dragon introduced after Dire Miralis, I really loved fighting all of them across generations and platforms
Kind of sad the video did not mention the Black dragons Disufiora and Merphistophelin, but considering they're not part of the Main Line MH it's understandable.
The Iceborne lorebook Capcom put out. He's supposed to be a rival to Fatalis, and because World was a reimaging of MH1 he acts as the Fatalis of the new world. Even his seige is supposed to call back to the time limited Fatalis seige events of MH1. Safi was even supposed to be black at first before they realized almost every single one of their most powerful monsters are black
Monsters are only considered Black Dragons is because they were originally confused as the original Black Dragon Fatalis. Alatreon at first was first confused to be Fatalis but it obviously wasn't, and all of them have "Black Dragon" in their titles, "Blazing Black Dragon" "Smelting Black Dragon" etc. Safi was never confused to be Fatalis nor does it have a "Black Dragon" title so it isn't a part of the same group
Black Dragons aren't even a legit category bro. Alatreon, Fatalis and Dire are all just forbidden monster and Safi is not in forbidden category. Try not to spread misinformation next time.
Safi is not a black dragon. It’s a contender but not a black dragon. Also for those who played dragons dogma will notice how similar it looks to the main red dragon of that story
Alright hear me out i think behemoth is a black dragon/first class monster it has control over magic, multiple elements, and can summon a huge meteor that kills everyone caught in the blast
He isn't a black dragon because he is red, no pun intended, the devs literally said this xD. In an interview they declared that in the process of making Safi he was black coloured at the beginning, but they also wanted Safi to be a contrapart to fatalis, so they decided to make Safi red to emphasize this contrast and to differ them, but Safi is a black dragon in intention and concept. Basically fatalis is the king of monsters and Safi jiva is a demon who came of the sky to destroy everything (if you know safi ecology you know what I meant).
@@leoxgamer1342 the "black dragon" concept is only a fan thing, it has never being used by the Devs before 5th gen when they where talking about Safi as I said and they weren't even using the concept as a category of monsters. Literally the black dragons are named that way (by the fan base) because they are black coloured and extremely powerful referencing also the title of fatalis who is "the black dragon", there are even monsters black coloured like akantor that haven't been counted by the fan base as black dragons or extremely powerful monsters like amatsu who aren't also black dragons, so the concept of black dragons have been romanticised a lot and usually it only leads the fans to misconceptions. If we want to use "official categories" the correct way to call these monsters is "dangerous first-class monsters" for monsters like the secret final bosses (Shara, dalamadur, amatsu, etc...) or some special variants or regular monsters and "forbidden monsters" for monsters like fatalis, alatreon, miralis and very few more ones, the forbidden stuff is because of their lore basically. This was originally just a hypothesis because we didn't know why Alatreon entered the New World until the Dive Into Iceborne Book released (which I can grab the info from if needed), that said Safi'jiiva's "presumed" status is a Fandom thing, I grabbed the info I had of how Safi is meant to be an opposite of Fatalis right off the book (with Safi actually having an original Black Dragon design) which makes it in the Black Dragon category as this category doesn't necessarily mean the dragon itself is black in colour, being linked to other Black Dragons puts them in the group as they are known under the Dangerous First Class monsters name as well
Old Fatalis name has been around since MH2, both White and Old Fatalis have been used for ages
@@ChronoPinoyXThe ingame terminology used for them and many other such monsters like Dala, Amatsu or Narwa, is "Calamity Class Elder Dragon". It was used within Rise a few times and is the highest official canon threat level.

Dire miralis is such a gem
Next MH should make the appearance of the "girl in the white robe" or the "scarlet mystery man" because they gave us the most sus quests in old monster hunter games and that includes the Forbidden Monsters.
My favorite part of the black dragon lore is that Alatreon is a complete outlier even there. I believe Dire Miralis was classified as a black dragon due to some perceived relation with Fatalis(same skeleton, and Fatalis and Miralis are similar in terms of naming convention). But then, there’s Alatreon, who’s just… really, absurdly destructive. He popped up on scene, was so cataclysmic that the guild went “oh fuck” and branded him a forbidden god.
the legend of the 6-horned fatalis may yet one day grace reality...

Probably on calamity class
"Likely coming in the future". My brother in Christ they literally revealed it at the game awards
Its 4 am and just cant sleep so lore time it is
My biggest MonHun headcanon is that there are a series of ultradragons called red dragons, and are very much like black dragons but instead of focusing on death they focus on life.
Ok where you have the Info that the White fatalis commanded Black fatalis?
Since i know Black fatalis attacked castle schrade due its hate for humans
Its the older lore. They have since retconned it along with the existence of the ancient civilization.
@@oriondye3212 ohh ok that makes sense then
It's the older lore yes, but since we don't have any information about why fatalis was in the castle in iceborne we can only attach to this information until something new comes up.

Safi'jiiva isn't a "Black Dragon". Black Dragon isn't a power level, it's a title.
ua-cam.com/video/4aEpfLUHCkU/v-deo.html
(PRODUCTION NOTE - Kaname Fujioka)
In "MHW:IB" as well, I wanted to include a new Siege with 16 players.

Odd isn't it.
safii's a special case, he has the power of a black dragon for sure but isn't categorised as one, he's instead refered to as a red dragon, the difference is negligeable however there's one thing safi has that the other elders and black dragons don't, it's complete control of bio energy which kindda relates to dragon energy, but it's also why it is weak to it, now bio energy is kindda just the "essence of wyverns and dragons that died" and is a bit BS overall, but it's cool to see a monster able to fully take advantage of it, might be able to tank a fatalis though the matchup would depend on if the environment is rich in energy or not

The strongest black dragon is the white one.

Ahh yes lets burn all records on how to defeat the one thing that can cause our extinction. Certified hood classic.
Safi is a black dragon/first class/forbidden monster? I don't remember that ever being stated
Yeah it's not a black dragon don't know where he got that

Alright hear me out i think behemoth is a black dragon/first class monster it has control over magic, multiple elements, and can summon a huge meteor that kills everyone caught in the blast
No, its not even part of the lore so why would it be classed as a black dragon 🤨
behemoth isnt even a dragon and isnt in monster hunter universe lol he is just a collab came from final fantasy 14

LETS GOOOOO NEW PINOY 🇵🇭 great content man
i dont know if safi was officially classified as black dragon
He isn't a black dragon because he is red, no pun intended, the devs literally said this xD.
In an interview they declared that in the process of making Safi he was black coloured at the beginning, but they also wanted Safi to be a contrapart to fatalis, so they decided to make Safi red to emphasize this contrast and to differ them, but Safi is a black dragon in intention and concept.
Basically fatalis is the king of monsters and Safi jiva is a demon who came of the sky to destroy everything (if you know safi ecology you know what I meant).
Because it's not
@@daviddelapazgil7274 you don’t have to be black to be a black dragon it’s a tidal not really a literal description
So if we put ourselves the most accurately possible black dragons don't even exist
@@daviddelapazgil7274 safi came to destroy everything but his ultimate cant even break a little rock
