Are Your Drawings Being BETRAYED By Your Lines?

- It's tricky, we use lines to create art, but if we rely too heavily on them they can actually hamper our artistic growth or work against the things we’re trying to draw. In this week's video, we're using a couple of examples to show you how lines can help or hinder your drawing and character design skills.

nahhh, my kids shouldn't do lines....it rots their minds
I have found that if I'm not careful with how the lines are, the nose completely ruins the whole face. I've never actually known why until now. Thanks.
I would like to think that the nose is a 2nd face on the face. With the nostrils as mini eyes and the top of the lips as a mini smile
A well drawn line is like a carefully chosen word. If you mess up even a tiny detail, it can zucchini the while thing!
@`M I L K K T E A` poetry
Really neat points!! I loved the solutions you found for the pizza character as well, especially the coattails!
Thanks so much! I was happy with the pepperoni pants buttons :P
I feel that people assume clean line art=better art, which I don't believe is the case. I'm a messy artist, i can make good-looking lineart, but I feel like it removes a lot of emotion from my art in some pieces. Yet for other people Its the other way around. It always depends on what you draw, what your art style is and what kind of vibe the art is supposed to give.
theres a difference between a looser approach that still shows a lot of confidence and clearly defined shapes and just messy lineart tho. I know what you mean but I think messy is the wrong word here. Lineart doesnt need to be super clean but it needs structure and confidence to feel grounded and believable
I have never felt so attacked by a video title
hard same.
that snout critique was very interesting, doesn't look extremely different et it looks was better. Before I didn't know what was wrong with the face but I knew that something was off about it. thank you for sharing!
Nice! Haha, my art got used as an example.
Thanks so much Godahl!
I love the cat wizard character design
Your design sense is great! I love how stylized and flat the cat wizard looks!
@@ayaneagano6059 she's meant to look like a gentleman thief, like Arsene Lupin or AJ Raffles! 😭😭😭 sounds like my design isnt very readable. :(
@@godahlrogue8587 I just said “cat wizard” because the other person said... I can definitely see influence from Lupin.
Your room looks like an aesthetic phone wallpaper, don't ask why
My room looks like a spider then...
Brookes in a Pizza costume when?
May 9th and 10th on Twitch, it probably WONT happen!
Shout out to line weight and being thicker the closer it is. Of course it’s style but thinking of how it’s implemented is best.
Your videos always remind despite how solid I’ve gotten over the years I still have much to learn
we all do!!
I am still young, but this video helped with one of my watercolor paintings.
I just saw that a new paper Mario was announced by Nintendo an hour ago, then I watched this video where you are wearing a paper Mario shirt. Interesting.
true!
dude I GOTTA know how you did your backgrround! What are those things hanging on the wall made of? Their texture looks SO CLEAN AND PRISTINE
Thanks! Its mostly vinyl and paint
I consider myself a connoisseur of art. I've done animation, water color, sandblasting and some others forms of art, but illustrations are where I draw the line.
I thought you drew the line at animation
oh my gosh thank you so much for this. This was really helpful because it not only shows a how to improve, it also shows what sort of mind set you should have when drawing a character. I was gonna subscribe when I realized I already was XD Turned on notifications though
I start off doing dimensional simple shapes for my characters but I always end up losing that dimension once I go into final line and color. Honestly it seems like the only way I can make my character look dimensional is if I put them in a striped catsuit where the stripes serve as contours to show dimension. anyone else have a similar frustration?
Have you tried adding value into your piece? Shadows take a huge part in defining shape; it's not just lines and color. Highlights as well but they do very little as opposed to shading.
Ezers I also have a problem with adding value to my piece, I never feel like it looks just quite right or I get obsessed with deciding what the shadows will look like: are they solid shapes of shadows or more realistic gradient/opacity type shadows?
@@Artofcarissa Sorry for the late reply, but shadows vary depending on the shape and texture of the object with the shadow. Gradient shadows for smoother and rounded surfaces and harder shadows for blockier shapes, but shadows are also apart of one's style. You can be realistic and use more shadows with various opacities, or a simpler style with simple shading. Many things play in part when creating dimension, like line, contrast, size, form, etc. Learning through real life scenarios helps as well as studying your favorite artists and pieces to understand how they were able to achieve dimension on their part. Maybe try varying line width? The smallest details can be the things that can make or break your art, but I too am still too inexperienced to make you take this to heart, so I'll just say: keep learning. ^^
Carissa Renard try crosshatching maybe?
I was supposed to focus on drawing after watching the last video you did, but then I saw this... This has been my weakness and I've known it. I'm starting to get serious now and you're really helping me with that.
You: Are your drawings being betrayed by your lines?
Me: I--
My hand tremor: *yes*
I have an idea.
Scary designs!
Your take on horror, how do we make our epic nightmares be known?
While i do love a dose of mystery, danger, adventure or even a little creepy, i have no taste or output in the realm of horror. I mostly make art to get away from that sort of thing 🙂
@@CharacterDesignForge , alright, how about holy designs? What sort of grand combinations make something celestial?
This was EXTREMELY helpful! Thanks! 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
when its your colors that betray your lineart, not the other around ;-;
seriously guys, there's gotta be some trick to choosing colors, why does everything I color look so out of life and boring smh
Try colorhunt.co for some palette ideas. Then don't forget the large, medium, small rule.
@@Stephen-T-Clark oh thankyou, I've never used that website before. I really appreciate the advice
jocelyn machado Look at a color wheel and choose colors that are either next to eachother OR near completely opposite of eachother. Also make sure they aren’t full saturation.
Another tip; put a black or grey layer and set it to Hue. This turns the image to greyscale. Sometimes, if the colors are too similar, it’ll look flatter. The piece should still read clearly even in monochrome.
@@gregjayonnaise8314 I can't set a layer to hue on my program
Is there a full version of that awesome outro music?
Also, awesome video as usual 😃
Main takeaway: lines are chainsaws. Got it.
Great video and very helpful, thank you!!
Amazing comments ! I really love the fact that you’re bringing real solutions up without completely changing the original work, this makes it really helpful. You have a new subscriber here !
Having grown up just sketching with pens I never had to do much clean line work, after getting into digital I tried it but always felt like it made things look bad. But this explains allot, it's more like I need to use the lines to emphasise the flow and shape rather than just flat outlining every little detail.
I'm working on a comic where... well colors really play a big role. So I benefitted greatly when I removed the lines.
oooh i havent clicked on any other video faster, i love your channel, keep it goin
Thanks, I'll try as always!
What a useful video. Thank you
Great art! Thank you for sharing.
Lines are infinetly thin, they can cut anything! Of course they're dangerous!
Really helpful video, I really enjoy your channel and art style. Just wondering, when do you think will see more stuff done with Biko and his allies? I really like how they're coming along, and would like to see more. Great vid, can't wait for the next one, stay safe and healthy :D
Thanks! You will definitely see more soon 😄
@@CharacterDesignForge Ok, can't wait :D
Hi there, do you illustrate childrens books? I have one that needs illustration. Learning how to illustrate in the mean time by watching your tutorials
Yes I do! If you want to follow through you can contact me here: brookeseggleston.com/contact
This is good stuff that I'm going to have to work on
I should practice more with the face and noses especially aaaaa
Yes.
I getting called out but that's fine because I'm learning
Hah... enemy lines.
Thank you
Yay! New video :3
Noses and eye brows are something I need to work on.
Line with is also important, I kinda flip flop between line types, but thinner and more controlled line with tend to look cleaner.
The pizza coattail thing was so clever!! I actually adore that idea. I have one question though, what’s your outro song?
This was helpful!
fantastic!
*sees title* yes. Definitely. Absolutely
Yeah, I'm working on my lines too. In the mean time, I can paint! lol

And thanks Brookes!
Awesome, itll be a lot of fun!

If the answer is yes....welcome to art.
Have you ever wonder what it would be like if a character had one trait changed like Wario being nice or Knuckles being purple or Mario being a villain?
You need more subscribers.
my baby crayon lines are killing me!
Been too long since I watched one of your videos, great job as always man.
That’s too bad, I hope I’ve... re-earned your viewership, I put the work in every week!
All good man I've just haven't been drawing much since Sep. Time to get caught up on your vids. Cheers
Sometimes when I put lines in my drawings it goes from looking good to something in loud house episode. Not that Lh is bad. It’s not what I’m going for
My brother told me to try to make my drawings without lines and now you tell me lines can sometimes cause trouble...
Maybe I should try drawing line-less then?
The point of the video wasn’t that lines are bad, it’s how to use them!
@@CharacterDesignForge Makes sense. I'll still try drawing line-less on my bro's request, but I'll keep practicing with the lines as well.
Pizza legs coming out the front and pizza point being a coat tail was genius!!! The original artist is gonna be an idiot if they dont change it to that!
Thanks but id rather you give compliments without tearing the original artist down! 🙂
I'm a new artist, and I've been having trouble with my lines, but not like this. I feel like my lines are too thick when I draw, and it makes it look less good.
For digital art: just work with a smaller brush size
For traditional: try working BIGGER. Bigger sheet of paper, bigger shapes you draw...it's not only making your lines look thinner in comparison, it also helps reminding you to draw from your shoulder not the wrist and fingers, which can really be very beneficial for your line quality.
@@mathilda6763 wait, is it really that simple for digital art? I keep thinking that a smaller brush will make selecting the drawing for coloring it in harder.
@@APerson-ws4cw Sorry, for the late reply yt didn't notify me.
it's really that simple... but the trick with the big canvas also works with digital art too. If you can't get small enough with your brush to get the right line-to-canvas ration, make the canvas bigger and use a proportional-sized brush.
Working zoomed out and big enough is important because it helps you focus on the overall swoop instead of the tiny wobbles of your line.
Is cartoon charcters need perspective??
Definitely!
@@CharacterDesignForge :(
lines are illegal in at lest 15 states
Uwu
This is definitely some subjective stuff. I dig some of the drawings you changed, which is fine.
I bet you've already talked about this - but I wanna learn more about color and shading. I feel like doing those poorly is almost not subjective, so I value them
Can you expound on what particular part of this video was subjective?
@@CharacterDesignForge Sure! The cyclopses at 3:25 and the pizza around 4:20. With the legs, I don't think I mind the physicality in these cases - I feel like changing them to make more physical sense makes them a little more homogenous. It's a small thing.
Right but, correctly executing drawing isn’t really about subjectivity unless we fully leave the bounds of what most stylized art is guided by and how our eyes receive it. I’m really not a fan of handwaving away points given for improvement as being subjective. I suppose you could say instead “wanting to improve is optional.” At that point, how can I supply a student with critique and actionable work if the work is already subjectively perfect?
@@CharacterDesignForge Hmm..
I suppose in the context of teaching, subjectivity isn't the focus, like you're saying. We're sticking to convention a little more to build those fundamentals, instead of making something that would appeal most to me, PurpleFreezer lol.
@@PurpleFreezerPage Exactly. Part of why I try to avoid making extensive design choices on my end. Glad a fellow teacher understands 😃
Just like a chainsaw XD
That's why I always paint my art lol
Hey I need help for my character,I need someone to see it before I can use it
In the dinamite stick, they eyes are being obstructed by the top lip. The lip is curled up past the top of the stick, almost to the bottom of the fuse.
Look at the side by side at 3:20. Your stick is calling a friend over. The original stick is FREAKING out. I understand the point you’re trying to illustrate, but in this case you’re misinterpreting the context.
The point still stands friend. the pose is indeed different in mine but the idea is about it's construction.
But I suppose if you say that I am definitively misinterpreting it, then I guess that's the absolute truth!
Brookes Eggleston - Character Design Forge I don’t deny the point. You’ve presented well. Just this particular example is a little weak as you’ve changed the intent of the pose.
I particularly do like the pizza’s legs in front, making the pizza point into tux tails. That works great.
Maybe can you talk about character development please
I like the advice but I think some of the artists did some of the simplistic and abstract lines on purpose, to code with their style.
The dynamite stick looked fine those are lips
In that case the lines are still inhibiting our understanding of those shapes.
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: Yes, yes they do.
Is this a meme im unaware of?
If nothing else, my art *is* my lines.
What a dramatic title hahaha
Welcome to youtube, where when i give things straight forward titles no one watches 😆
ikr
my kids became real when I took away their lines
Lines cannot betray your art if you don't draw lineart :))))
Ok but if youll watch the video, all drawings would at some point need lines :)
A video I needed. Thank you.
I just love how I got an ad about cat food
