I know what you mean, but I think McHale in his prime would have been there Bird or no Bird. He reminded me of a slithering snake in the paint, try to stop him right he goes left. Stop him left he goes right. Double team him and he makes a miracle slide between them for a quick 2.

@@kennethward4985McHale was a fabulous player...and often double teamed. However, Larry pushed him to greatness. And Without Kevin, Celtics are a STILL solid playoff team. Without Larry, they arent.
I think Kevin might have been borderline HOF without Larry, and waiting years before he has close to the votes he needs...
..with Larry, he's a no brainer.

I always harp on this but will do so again. What separates the golden era that Magic and Bird ushered in, from contemporary BB is the physicality. All the players in that era had to be tough and then skillful. The contemporary NBA has upended that to skillful on the court and tough on twitter.

At one point you can see Kareem is trying to guard him and boom just like that Larry tosses the ball over Kareem to McHale who is at the other end of the court. That must have annoyed the snot out of Kareem. Here we got the alpha dog ready to get the ball and Larry just threw him an impossible pass that he had no chance of catching up to. The only thing that would make it more embarrassing is if he yelled "Fetch this!".

Robert Parish, DJ, Ainge, and McHale beg to differ. In fact, that was his greatest ability: to make those around him better. Even on Indiana State, not only did his teammates have to be ready for those crazy passes, but they started throwing them sometimes too. He’d make them see the game differently than they did before playing with The Legend

For me Larry is the GOAT, because basketball is a game of skill. And skilled he was. Both hands. Builtin Radar. Tough as a nail. Incapable of giving up. Clutchest man to ever live - in any sport. Got his teammates in the HOF by making them better. I love Kevin, Robert, DJ - especially DJ, what a guard - and Danny and all the others, but would they have gotten to the HOF if they played for the Hawks? Or any other team? Despite the disadvantages he had, he came up with a way to win anyway. By playing it better than anyone else. In my opinion the GOAT has to at least win against the competition he is facing, since he can't play Wilt or somebody anymore. That's MJs achilles. Larry had to quit for him to start winning. Lebron is just not good enough - no clutch here and he's a pussy. I was lucky and got to see him doing it. I had that jersey back then and I never ever took it off. That got me that nickname :)

A few more facts to ponder. Bird is ambidextrous, and had the highest IQ of all time. He could make passes others couldn't and wouldn't conceive of.
Secondly, because Bird is in the conversation as the greatest passer of all time, at 6,10 he could see things others couldn't and therefore, it hurt his scoring average. Why would Bird take a 3 on a transition 2 on 1 like today's players do, when he could effortlessly make a higher percentage pass to a teammate? Add another 5 to 6 points on his PPG (at least if he decides to take the shot himself. And then add another few points on his average if he actually practiced 3’z. Honestly, it would be cruel what he would do to the NBA today.

Bird vs Lebron comparison, stats and facts on a per game basis over their careers. Points: Bird 24.3 mostly from mid range and out. Lebron 27.2 with around 40% from dunks and layups made easier by rule changes that essentially keeps the defensive team out of the paint. Midrange %: Couldn't find Bird's but we know it was good. Lebron 37.5%, oookaaay? 3 pointers all time league average is about 35.5%: Bird 40.65%, Lebron 34.5%. Freethrow %: Bird 88.6%, Lebron 73.5%. Assists: Bird 6.3/game often from dazzling passes underneath the basket, Lebron 7.3/game usually from relatively easy passes to wide open shooters as the result of his ability to drive to the basket. Rebounds: Bird 10/game, Lebron 7.5/game. Blocks: both at 0.08/game. Steals: Bird 1.7/game, Lebron 1.5/game. Turnovers: Bird 3.1/game, Lebron 3.5/game which is one of the worst ever. Clutch: Bird all of the time: Lebron: other than a few in the playoffs absolutely terrible. Defense: Bird consistent with a few all defensuve teams, Lebron more defensive teams earned or not, but look at his defense now🤣 Hustle: both had their day, but Bird didn't stop even with a crippled back. Who is the best small forward ever?

All things considered Bird is a better all around player than Lebron James and is probably the best small forward of all time. He may be top 5 but give me a break he is not ahead of Jordan. Jordan average 5.3 assists per game and Bird 6.3 but Jordan's clear number 1 responsibility was to score. Look at Jordan's assists, they are just pretty much just as flashy as Bird's. Lebron James' assists mostly come from his amazing ability to drive to the basket, force double and triple teams, then make a relatively simple pass to an outside shooter. Also to put Bird above, Magic, Stockton, Kidd and even Nash when considering the greatest passer of all time is a bit of a stretch.

One takeaway from this is how his teammates finished off these insane impromptu passes. This must have been practiced quite a bit in scrimmage between the team.
I hated Bird as a Rockets fan back in the day. Because he was so good. Looking at the pathetic state of the nba now, I miss those days.
I'll just watch reruns of Olajuwon, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, et al. Some of us got to witness the golden era.
