- R.L. Burnside at home in Independence, Mississippi, shot by Alan Lomax, Worth Long, and John Bishop in August, 1978. For more information about the American Patchwork filmwork, Alan Lomax, and his collections, visit culturalequity.org. [02.11.08 3-13]
I've listened to all the RL ones where He is sitting here. They are so, soooo pure, the guitar has a rubber band type feeling with his claw and hammer rhythm hand so fluid and outside sounds of the crickets, trees and kids is just in the moment hill country blues at its raw finest.
Funny i was just thinking how real it sounded with the kids and outside noices .. brings back beautiful memories ....
That guitar was hand made
And it burnt up in the house fire

@@SUSHANDLE ay shut the fucking fuck up about your proper grammar lesson 🤣
Burnside played music, his whole life, even when working other jobs. The area of Mississippi that he is from, is right close to Memphis. It's well documented that Elvis used to frequent the blues bars with the black folk, when he was in high school, and before he was famous. BB King remembered him, from that time. At any rate, those guys playing the blues were a major influence on Elvis, and I believe that it's highly likely that Burnside influenced Elvis. Burnside didn't gain any notice until long after Elvis died, so I doubt that Elvis would have remembered it, and Burnside probably wouldn't have remembered either (he'd have likely been too drunk, lol)
Also, Burnside served 6 months in prison, for murder. Quarrel over some dice, as I recall. At his trial, he told the judge, "I ain't mean to kill him; I just meant to shoot the somebitch in the head. Him dyin' was between him and the Lord." Apparently, RL drove a tractor better than he played guitar, so his boss pulled some strings to get him out of prison early.
And this concludes today's segment of "Answers to Questions Ain't Nobody Ask".
Dude that was a good read. Thank you for the info!
Dude must have been a hell of a tractor driver

R. L. Burnside (November 23, 1926 - September 01, 2005) was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. He played music for much of his life but received little recognition before the early 1990s. In the latter half of that decade, Burnside recorded and toured with Jon Spencer, garnering crossover appeal and introducing his music to a new fan base in the punk and garage rock scenes.

Best smile in the blues genre
It's like he's sharing a secret .
agree
Absolutely, remembering when and why he wrote it :)
He is 52 years old there. Amazing teeth, amazing genetics! His teeth at 52 look better than mine at 35!
The greatest smile in the world while playing magical blues!
Some of the best things in life are free and this is one of those things im a friend of the Burnside family they are great people
It sounds like a raw haunting cry . This is the blues in its purest form.
I had to pinch myself listening to this. Shaking my head. Truly staggering. Blues to the bone.
Thank you Alan Lomax the people a thousand years from now will still appreciate what you did 🙏
Wrote Alan while he was still alive thanking him. His daughter read my letter to him and responded. Lomax understood the blues.
The wailing baby's always in tune!
ladies and gentleman, how about a round of applause for the 10000 cicadas in the rhythym section
This is solid freaking gold. I listen to this on a daily basis.
... and so does your neighbor hahaha
He is definitely in my Hall of Fame. The only way to truly give thanks is to take a massive tube amp into a cornfield next to some railroad tracks, magically find a plug, turn up to 11, and play "See My Jumper Hanging On The Line" until your fingers fall off.
The sound he gets with his voice and guitar is astonishing, it pulls you right in.
I hope this man is in the rock and roll hall of fame and people who play need to say thank you
No way. We don't want his memory tarnished with that crap.
Forget a damn rock hall of fame. None of that stuff matter at all period. I mean who really want to feel important about something like that
RnR HoF is a joke. It's better to not be in it, imo.
@@swinetrek how then to remember and honor RL?
Michael Barlanti this isn’t rock.
I am better person after listening to this... thanks for posting!
A wonderful man!! And that smile!! Wow!!
RL comes across as such a nice man. He radiates something I can't describe and the music....what can I say? Incredible.
What beautiful music..
I could sit down..have a beer and watch RL play all night long..
Amen
When I first heard blues music, is was an out of body experience. The sound of the blues guitar was truly captivating. No other form of music has come close, in my opinion, to portraying the emotions and feelings of humanity...
Damn straight man. Blues has a rawness, honesty and swagger that you can’t find anywhere else in music.
yep......humanity......humanity and pain are stuck forever
When I first herd the blues it hit me like a 2x4!! I been fallowing Mississippi guitar ever since.
Same
Great also how he does the rhythm and lead stuff at the same time. One man band.
I love him when he give a smile makes me fell joy n happiness inside me.thankyou sir for making me fell joy.❤️👍🙏
seriously my favourite blues song of all time.
Man Oh Man , this is good stuff , RL grinnin' a mile wide. Classic.
Simon Jones not just good stuff. This is THE stuff. Sho yo right though.
He strikes me as a very educated man. Education can come to different people in different ways . This is great blues!
yeh society and technology are taking us in the right direction aren't they.
hadron89 for the most part. You must be smoking crack. Climate scientists are agreed we are heading toward catastrophic climate collapse and Donald trump is putting children in cages.
What about Humanity? Isn't it necessary before all else? What value does knowledge have if wielded incorrectly? R.L. Burnside sure is highly intelligent if you ask me. He brought artistry to the world that which is just that which makes life worth living.
there if formal education, important .. and there is life
Hey hadron89... go back to /r/incels please. You're too stupid even for youtube comments.
His genuine music goes way through my bones ! Music as a healing medicine !
This dude is beyond awesome! Rock on, man!
Makes me sad to watch this because I didn't know this was happening in 1978. I didn't know about RL until about 1998 and by then it was almost too late. I missed so much great blues. RL was by far one of my favorite hill country artists, so overlooked for so long, such great music. Love these archive videos - thank you so much for posting.
yea all the good one,s are gone,we must be thankful for what they left us,these people will never be forgotten, they live on in their music!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just discovered him!
This man sure has the blues. This is real blues.
My Opinion, he is the King of Blues. He showed how to play Blues in the modern world but without destroing it.
Ringo sang it best. "If you wanna play the blues, you gotta pay your dues because it ain't easy."
Wow,this is 2024 and how i passed over RL is beyond me!
I always new where the blues came from, this only makes it more binding,to what i always believed!
I think of my mother when i listen, and i know where i got the musical talent from!!
Thank you so much for posting!!
Taking a glass of vino n liking the blues ❤
Thank you Alan Lomax for all of these amazing Burnside clips. And thank you for all of your music and what you have shared over the years too; what you have made available to the World is of such importance, you deserve a million times more recognition. Bless you, man
Thank you
'Lord what can I do for the bread.'
A problem as old as time Burnside. But you'll live forever too.
Straight up Lightnin'
one of the greats a true genius thanks
this mans my hero......
plain and simple
13 thumbs down... lol... ridiculous... dude is the truth.
WoHoW! Fantastic!
RL has a beautiful smile! The blues, man, its in the water in Mississippi I swear.
@IV Ltd What's your point?😒
Amazing
He burnin all that shit down, not just the sides.
This is one of the best moments caught on camera. Thanks for sharing.
You tube has got to the point where they’re harassing us with ads, can’t even listen to music without looking at and touching your phone for 2 god damn minutes
Awesome...pure talent.Thank you Mr Burnside.
The year I graduated, wish I had known these blues then ,like I know these blues now ,my education came after school ,and has continues to this day ,cause of blues men like RL ...

Absolutely Love this One
Thank you Alan Lomax !!
That’s the real deal right there!
I still luv ya R.L !
Absolutely wonderful.
Man, so good... That voice and those guitar licks... So good! Mmm!!
I did a poem called Burnside Blues named after a provincial jail. I googled it and look what I found....awesome connection..serious Blues
Amazing.
Cheers RL you bring light on my darkest day...
This man makes me want to practice my guitar.
I love this man's music..
Fantastic!
This is the 'essence' of blues. 'Low down, bone shakin chills',here.........
so good
this is WHERE I FELL IN LOVE WITH AN ELECTRIC GUITAR
so good....
Music never made me get hard before.....till now!! Seriously though just goes to show you dont need anything more than a geetar and raw talent, people need to remember that. Getting the guitar is the easy part, you need to visit the crossroads for the raw talent, if you know you know
such a beautifull guitar
The additional sound of crickets just gives me chills it's such authentic blues
He never lost his smile
Clearly one of Jimi Hendix's influences, this man is unreal. And on THAT guitar no less. Imagine a $5g Gibson in this man's hands. It's just a shame he didn't get discovered until later in life. Blues in its rawest form, this one departs from the rhythmic, droning type of boogie blues he was known for and is about as traditional as R.L. gets. He IS the blues.
@@gogobaga yes, you are right in a manner of speaking. Because to make this guitar sound like he is, it is almost inconceivable. I play myself. And I am not bad. But I can imagine myself trying to make this guitar sound like only he can and I know for me anyway, it would not be possible. Mainly due to the fact that he is finger picking without finger picks mind you, something I cannot manage on my best day. Using primarily his pointer or index finger with long nails, he does use other fingers and I have tried this, it is not as easy as some make it look. The timing of using more than just the single pick I learned with is overwhelming for me. But I still try. I don't have any quit in me and although hearing someone as good as this man is can be a bit disheartening I don't let it deter me from practice. If I could one day be as half as good as R.L. was, and be lucky enough to be able to hear his influence in my playing that would be just fine with me. I would be proud to keep a small part of him and the hill country blues alive. If Lomax had only found him 20 yrs earlier.
the shitty intonation is what gives it that feel, the guitar has stories it could tell, and thats part of what we’re hearing
no i want that guitar in his hands
I love his voice.
I realy like his style ...power 🙏♥️
God bless
I love the real deal Chicago! Maxwell st! Boy!oh!boy! What I learned !!! Too!!! Cold!!!!! Move south!!!!
His kids got him going on the internet and that put so much life into him during his last years, it was like it made it all worth while after all. I like how humble he is in these sessions. That jumps out I think, he doesn't even have any socks on with his boots! Most likely he just finished working and did get his best shirt on for the occasion. he and all the other blues men never did get any money from those recordings until years later, even then I don't think it came close to what Lomax got. Thank you very much for posting his songs here.
True blues my brother
One of the best too ever do it
Boy I sure miss my mini .
He is 52 years old here. Look at those teeth, guys. Jesus Christ they are magnificent!
Never heard or seen nobody makes so many sounds on a guitar.... It's amazing sounds like three people picking three different types of guitars... Do it r.l.👍
