Car bombings were stupendous. It was insane. I am Ukrainian but lived in Moscow. Mafia control came down to killing journalists to even quickly going after federal agents. Which is unheard of. The 1990s were super dangerous in Russia

@@nikolaivista920 Putin was part of mafia as well. Him was a vise mayor to Sobchak and all the illegal dealing were going through him. He later legalized and pulled his mafia buddies into the government ala Ivanuzhenkov and others like him. Now they all are well respected businessmen and the rest have dies in jails.

As an American, I too lived in Russia around this time period (assuming he was there in the 1990s). It was every bit as crazy as this guest claims, even more so according to my experiences there 91-92. In Leningrad that first summer, I was attending the first unsanctioned music concert (held outdoors at Petropavlosk Fortress). Maybe 2k-3k young people in attendance but a few hundred police & militia. Lots of alcohol to go around, but no toilets. A section of the fortress wall became an unofficial group urinal. Wow relieving myself there, Two officers approached me from the back and beat the shit out of me with nightsticks, dragged me off to a substation for charging. I too had forgotten my papers, however I had two packs of Marlboro Reds; securing my release & with an apology. Later that evening, they tracked me down just to return my Russian dictionary. “Wild Wild West” came in ‘92. Gunfights, assassinations & and car bombings became the norm. Bloated bodies were left for days in the Neva River “to send a message.” When I alerted police, I was told to mind my own business. For you naysayers and critics, get off your ass, get a passport & learn how to use it. Learn the realities of the world, before you allow them to take over yours (ours) here in the USA. It’s right around the corner.

To me his story is realistic. Eatern europe in the 90s was a total wreck of an economy, people had to put food on the table and in many cases working was not enough or possible. Crime of different levels was just a way to survive..for many the only way. My father was a uranium minor up until the 90s, when the mine closed overnight.. Next week he got a 'job' because preferred us kids fead. As a child i saw only, that he got a pistole and a guard dog from his employer and was told, that he is a security person now. He was doing it for about a year..always night shifts.. Later when i become around 15, i asked him how it came that he held a gun and never had a license not for the gun, nor for security job. He just bullshited something than... Later when i was around 30 I asked again, and he told me, that his 'job' was than to be an armed guard of a hotel, that was filled with prostitutes, and his employer was the man, who had enough money through the businesses to pay off the officials and the police, and enough armed man protecting his businesses from his 'competitors'. My fater was/is a good man, but i would not face him than if someone would try to take away his/our fragile livinghood. This was in Hungary, but Ukraine and Russia were far worse. When these 'businessman' in Hungary had affairs and did not want their hands get dirty, they called the 'ukranian lawyers'.. One human life costed around what today is 200$. 1 Kalashnikow costed around 100$ after the red army got broken and corruption took over at every level.

Park Kultury WAS a pretty bad neighborhood in the 90-s. And since it is near the center, that's exactly the kind of crime you could witness there - in more remote areas it was mostly gopniki with knifes, not AK-welding guys in Mercedes. Of course, there're exceptions, like Togliatti and Rostov were legit criminal capitals of Russia.
