    Seems to over complicating the job. The longest drop is the best one to put on first then work back up the stairs and down into the hall. You don't want to end up with a narrow strip near the bulkhead wall as this will be far more difficult to put on with out ripping / tearing it.

      @Fantazia11 3 роки тому +4

      I totally agree, the longest drop goes in first.nobody wants to mess about with a small strip for the longest drop. I've been a painter&decorator for over 25 yrs and I always put the the longest drop in first.

      I thought it would been cross lined first?

    • @ProfessionalPainterDecorator
      @ProfessionalPainterDecorator Рік тому

      @@TheOlzee there's no need to line with those coloured fresco wall papers.
      If the walls are bad it's a good idea to have a clean coloured even porosity surface to work on.
      But like with woodchip, anaglypta and blown vinyls there's no need to line.

      @@ProfessionalPainterDecorator so as long as walls are smooth, even if that required some filling and sanding down or even if it’s newly plastered it’s ok to go straight on with the finish paper?

    Again we have lots of people coming on here criticising and saying they know better. So if you are that good then why are you watching "how to" videos???

    • @madeinuk68
      @madeinuk68 7 років тому

      Derek In Cambs So true. I know how to do many jobs very well,but I would not show them on UA-cam in a million years. I always admire people that take the time and effort, to do how to videos. I would never criticise any persons method,as long as the results are good. We all have different methods of doing jobs,and just because it is different to how I do it,that does not make it the wrong way. I may sometimes give someone tips on how they could make a job easier or quicker,but never in a critical way.

    ... streuth Rob - super video but it completely bypasses the bit where you actually hang the paper!! Did you do that just using an extension ladder? The actual crux, hanging the paper, is still a complete mystery to me ... but thanks for trying to explain how it's done ...

    First of all, if you want a professional job, then the walls should be lined first for various reasons. Secondly, you should always hang the longest drop first on a hall, stairs and landing, then work both ways from that point, you do this no matter whether it's a straight match, free match or drop match as it doesn't make any difference. ..The only thing that needs to be done hanging a drop match, is to work off 2 rolls at the same time to minimise wastage. It is always better to use ready made tub paste because it's stronger but not always necessary, so packet paste is sufficient for this paper.

    • @MrRobgardner
      @MrRobgardner  9 років тому +7

      You don't need to line the walls every time. The walls in this vides were it very good condition and smooth. There was no reason to charge the customer more to line the walls when it was not needed.
      Also you don't have to hang the longest drop 1st as long as it work out your drops currently. For someone that seems to know so much about it, why are you watching videos aimed for DIYers.

    • @Lloyd1885
      @Lloyd1885 9 років тому +4

      MrIknowbest2
      Its standard practice to hang the longest drop first, and I'd rather do that as opposed to working past pieces I have already hung in case I damage them..but as the hanger says, as long as the wall has been set out first then it shouldnt be a problem..also, some people may prefer to work left to right.
      As for working from two rolls, most papers are cut exactly the same, so there is no benefit..you'll still only get 3 drops out of a roll in most cases in an average height room with most drop patterns.
      Re lining...no not all walls need to be lined first..great if they were as it is an ideal surface as it evens out the porosity, equalises surface tension and hides minor imperfections but not always necessary..and its an additional cost to the customer.

    • @fatyowls
      @fatyowls 7 років тому +2

      I would agree with the longest piece first, but only line if necessary.

      I've been doing this job for 43 years, since I was 15. On a staircase it's always longest strip first. The reason is, if you try to hang a thin strip that widens out below, it will virtually alway tear. Plus you waste a lot of paper.

    • @TheOlzee

  • @MrIknowbest2
    @MrIknowbest2 9 років тому

    Can I just add for anyone watching this that it's all good and well these joints looking good after first applying it, but these papers shrink a little as they dry and can then show up small seam gaps. cross lining the walls first eliminates this happening. ..never seen a professional paper hanger recommend it goes straight on the wall, only paste the wall-wallpaper should be done this way because it's non woven and doesn't expand and shrink.

    • @Lloyd1885
      @Lloyd1885 9 років тому +1

      MrIknowbest2
      The majority of wallpapering videos on here feature walls that have no been lined though...re the non woven, I agree about the shrinkage.expansion but I would tend to push for lining paper if I was asked to hang this as some of them are tissue thin and you can see through them when dry...not good

      alot of painters put finish paper straight of the one walls, if you prep the wall properly and the are in a good condition then you are just wasting your time lining the walls, if your teaching in a college then yeh you have to show them to line walls first. I've always found you learn more on sight than in a college

    Really good video, well explained. few questions but. if your hanging a patterned paper on a staircase like the one in the video, how would you go about if if a hand rail was in place? would you just simply treat the top half separate from the bottom half until you are able to get a full drop on?
    thanks

  • @MrRobgardner

    Hi, cost mainly. But also i can mix it to the correct strength I feel most appropriate for the weight of the paper.

  • @MrIknowbest2
    @MrIknowbest2 9 років тому

    Of course it can be done without lining, but you can decant paint without mixing it first, prime woodwork without knotting it, gloss without rubbing in between coats, but it's not the best practice, if I'm teaching someone how to do something, I explain the best way to do it and why. Good idea using a lazer measure.

    Yes I do know a lot about my profession, and the reason I watch these video's is because I run my own business and also teach p&d part time, I like to show my students videos and ask me to point out mistakes or highlight ways it can be done better. Your comment about the walls were smooth so I didn't need to line first shows your limited knowledge.

    • @TheOlzee

      Old comment but why can’t he hang the paper without crosslining it if the walls a smooth and sized? Is it just a case of not being optimal or is it a big no no?
