  • Exploring the Mylodon Caves in Patagonia, Chile: A Journey Through Time
Welcome back to our channel, Roxanne & Len! Today, we are thrilled to take you on an extraordinary adventure to one of Patagonia's most fascinating historical sites - the Mylodon Caves. Nestled in the stunning landscapes of southern Chile, this site offers a unique glimpse into the prehistoric past and the natural beauty of the region. Join us as we explore the cave, uncover its secrets, and share our experiences with you.
The Mylodon Cave, or Cueva del Milodón, is a large cavern located in the Chilean Patagonia, near the town of Puerto Natales. This site is famous for the discovery of well-preserved remains of the Mylodon, a giant ground sloth that roamed the area thousands of years ago. The cave itself is a natural wonder, with its impressive size and intriguing geological formations.
Our adventure started early in the morning as we set out from Puerto Natales after checking out of our accommodations. The drive to the Mylodon Caves took us through breathtaking landscapes, with the majestic Andes mountains in the background and the pristine waters of the fjords glistening in the sunlight. The anticipation built as we approached the entrance to the cave, eager to step back in time and explore this ancient site.
As we entered the cave, we were immediately struck by its vastness. The main chamber is over 200 meters deep, with a ceiling that reaches up to 30 meters high. The cool, damp air and the echo of our footsteps added to the sense of mystery and awe. The cave walls are adorned with fascinating rock formations, created over millennia by the slow drip of water and the movement of the earth.
One of the highlights of our visit was seeing the life-size replica of the Mylodon, which stands near the entrance of the cave. This impressive model gives visitors a sense of the sheer size and power of this prehistoric creature. We spent some time reading the informative displays that explain the history of the Mylodon and the significance of the cave.
The story of the Mylodon Cave is closely tied to the discovery of the remains of the Mylodon. In 1895, a German explorer named Hermann Eberhard stumbled upon a piece of skin in the cave, which was later identified as belonging to a Mylodon. This discovery sparked a wave of scientific interest and led to further excavations, revealing bones, teeth, and other remains of the giant sloth.
The Mylodon is believed to have lived in the region around 14,000 years ago, during the late Pleistocene epoch. These herbivorous creatures were about the size of a modern-day elephant and had long, curved claws that they used to dig for roots and tubers. The discovery of their remains in the cave has provided valuable insights into the prehistoric fauna of Patagonia and the environmental conditions of the time.
After exploring the cave, we took some time to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding area. The Mylodon Cave is located within a protected area known as the Monumento Natural Cueva del Milodón, which covers over 200 hectares of pristine Patagonian wilderness. The park offers several hiking trails that allow visitors to explore the diverse flora and fauna of the region.
We decided to take a short hike to the nearby Silla del Diablo, or Devil's Chair, a rock formation that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The trail was well-marked and relatively easy, making it accessible for hikers of all levels. As we reached the top, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the rolling hills, dense forests, and distant mountains.

    Beautiful mountains.
In my country (Denmark) i think the highest point is like 173 meters above sea level.
I don´t know, if that´s including the flagpole on the top, but i think it is, since it´s so high 😁
Thanks for showing us S.America 👌👍

Maybe Denmark's highest point needs a growth spurt to catch up with the giants in South America! We are glad you enjoyed the scenery.
