- State police believe a driver attempting to merge onto I-95 South is the cause of the fiery crash Thursday morning under the Fairfield Avenue bridge in Norwalk.
People failing to properly merge is a real problem. I don't know what they are teaching them now, but when I was in driving classes, they taught us to MERGE, not blindly move over hoping people would get out of the way. Make this idiot pay for EVERYTHING!
People take tests just to pass the class (or in this case to get a driver’s license) whatever they do after depends on their life or death.
Not a day goes by that I don't see people merging incorrectly or passing and then going back into the right lane without giving adequate room.
Most people don’t merge properly or even signal, but the ones who do try to do it properly are often met with resistance from selfish idiots in the main lanes. When there is congestion, both sides need to cooperate and merge like a zipper.

trucks do the same thing or worse, they are not supposed to use the left lane, and you see them on i87, i287, BQE or Van Wick cutting across and driving on the left lane, buses too.

Damn 4 wheelers, when I was a trucker, I had so many close calls with 4 wheelers waiting until the last minute to cut me out to get off the very next exit! I have so much more but it isn’t always the truckers fault! Too much more to type about them!
I don't drive a truck, but people's driving habits are downright lethal. I mean.... passing my school bus on an acceleration lane? Switching lanes constantly? Violently? No turn signals? f u c k is going on?
Trying to merge is hard because people will see you trying to merge and they will do anything not to let you in knowing there is only so much time before you run out of lane and have to completely stop and hold up everyone behind you. People are so rude and unkind they cause wrecks with their impatience and selfishness. You could not pay me to live in a large city and have to deal with that every day.

Had a similar accident near Akron Ohio . A driver changed lanes aggressively and over corrected
He ended up crashing into the side of a tanker carrying gasoline ruptured the discharge pipe under the tanker causing it to catch fire
His car became stuck under the tanker and he was basically cremated as the entire truck literally melted there was nothing left

America is getting too populated for the roads to function safely. Driving to Florida, was amazed there weren’t more wrecks. Everyone tailgates and they drive about 80 mph

I live one mile from this exit, it is a major junction for Rt. 7 N + Rt 7 S + 95 N . You have traffic entering and exiting from the same lane and it can be a real challenge on heavy traffic days(everyday) I doubt that was the cause as much as it was some Ahole doing 90 in his BMW weaving in and out of lanes with zero concern for anyone!! Common place. We are used to this though, in the 70's a section of bridge collapsed one night into the river below killing 3, even then US1 was an absolute nightmare for months, Amazing that they will have 95 up and running by Monday or Tuesday (no paving in the rain) Just incredible. Give credit where credit is due!!
I was wrong, it was that one lane used to both enter and exit that started a chain reaction!! I travel that 5 times a week. Glad I know the back roads( NO TRUCKS due to low bridge under passes)
People are too inpatient when it comes to traffic. Making reckless maneuvers just to get around traffic, that’s why every time I drive to Chicago from Laporte Indiana, I see at least 3 different accidents.

Is there a commercial trucker that hauls gasoline that can answer a question because I’m wondering if there was possibility the truck driver could’ve moved ahead to not burn down the bridge I’m not blaming the driver, but if he had to get out in a hurry, I can understand that as well just asking a question

Often come across people who have no idea how to merge. First rule GET UP TO THE SPEED OF TRAFFIC. These people who come onto the highway at 40 mph and try to merge into 55 mph traffic cause endless problems. You should be doing the speed of traffic at the top of the ramp. Same rule when leaving the highway, you should be at the speed of traffic at the top of the ramp and decelerate on the ramp, not before. That's why we have ramps.
Hmm! Bet the state sued the trucking company for repairs to the bridge just as the state of California did yrs ago to a similar accident dealing with a fuel truck which caused a fire underneath a bridge on Hwy #60 in Pomana! #SMH 🙄

The DOT said that this work will be done by Monday, 6 May, no way is that possible! PennDot (Pennsylvania) took a little longer to replace and repair the overpass that was severely damaged by a fuel tanker that blew up under the overpass, but they did a phenomenal job repairing it temporarily, got 95 North reopened in days? I forget how long it took them, but it was quick, certainly not over the weekend though.
Maybe that’s what it will be as well; temporarily to keep traffic flowing until it’s all completed. We all know it will be an extensive repair with months of work.

The trucker could have let them in, but truckers don't do that.
As the driver entering the freeway, it is their responsibility to merge safely into traffic. Divers on the freeway have no responsibility to move or slow down for incoming vehicles. If possible I will move into the N-1 lane. In fact in urban areas I generally drive in the N-1 lane.
Years ago I had an elderly woman merge into traffic. Right into the side of my equipment/car trailer. The merge destroyed her car. Two flat tyres, and a 2” gash the full length of the left side of the car. I had to pry the fender away from the tyres on the trailer. Someday I will get around to replacing the fender. The comment of the CHP officer was it was time for her to stop driving.
Trucks can neither stop quickly, speed up quickly, nor veer out of the way quickly. This is basic physics
