  • Sometimes you get stuck in a rut with someone at work - a boss, a coworker, a direct report. Can the relationship be turned around? The good news is: yes. The bad news: it’ll take work, and you might need to be the bigger person. But one thing is true: it’ll definitely improve your work life if you both can repair things. Here are some critical tips from HBR contributing editor Amy Gallo.
00:00 Good news: you can (and should) fix broken relationships.
01:00 Are you overcompetent or overchallenged?
    01:32 Give up being right.
    03:44 Find common ground.
    04:54 Show, don’t tell.
    06:29 Give (and receive) feedback.
    07:30 Let’s review!

What you describe here isn't what I think of as a broken relationship. I've had to fix relationships where I've lost all trust for my manager, with them not putting in any effort. Because I couldn't just go without income, I had to fix this myself. I've had good managers, but the worst management seems to center on people who can't recognize the fundamental power imbalance between a manager and their reports.

This is good stuff. What I'm wondering is how you embark on this journey when the other person isn't engaging in good faith?

I like this video, but its missing the type of relationship you are trying to repair, which is critical to the approach you are going to take. Is this in between co-workers or someone in a leadership role??

What if the other party closes the door repeatedly whenever you try to reach out? Yet, in the company of others, show good behavior towards you?

it's all good, except that you can't fix a relationship with a boss who bullies you, he's either a narcissist or a racist or a weakling who feels the need to show that he holds power and control over you, he takes every opportunity to intimidate you, disguised as reasonable management - that only applies to you, not to any other team member for same situations, repeatedly - even colleagues are surprised by this 'special exclusive treatment' if they were to come to know about it as he is cleverly able to hide his behaviour. and believe me, i have tried everything already shown in this video.
