Hello Sophie. The year Princess Diana & the now King Charles III came to N.Z with The very young Prince William. I was working for a big department store in Auckland. We had a very beautiful rack of " afternoon tea" dresses. There was to be a garden party held for the royal couple on Saturday. Friday saw us busy with the landed gentry of Auckland buying our tea gowns for the event. The party was televised too. Monday morning came around & guess what? Every single dress was returned. Each wealthy woman told us that they hadn't worn the garments. We had to give them their money back. When we got back to our homes & watched the garden party, we saw all of our dresses on display. These were very wealthy women. We can laugh about it now, but at the time we were livid. Blasted cheek. Jane in New Zealand 🇬🇧🇳🇿

Hey Sophie this happened to my sister but it was not a bag it was a pair of expensive Prada sneakers. She bought them at Saks. They shipped them to her…something was off so she went to return them and they told her they were replicas! SO someone bought the real thing from Saks…swamped out the real for the fake. Put the fake in the Prada shoe box and returned them to Saks. I’m sure the sales person at Saks probably just checked the size to match and went ahead and put them back in stock. And those were the pair they shipped to my sister. It is crazy out there. I pretty much stay away from the latest it bags and shoes now cause the replicas are so good and they are quick to manufacter any popular “it” items. We aren’t even safe at the legit department stores these days! So sad!

Many years ago, I sold a rare LV bag to a buyer in Germany on a FB group and upon receiving the item, buyer opened a claim that item wasn’t as described (strap and receipt missing), so she asked for partial refund. I found it dubious as she claimed that there was no signs of tampering on the parcel. Paypal froze my fund while investigating the case. I was scared and furious, I found it highly unlikely that postman would steal straps and receipt and left the bag untouched. I had a feeling that the buyer was being dishonest and I stumbled upon a listing of VC with her initials and location using my pictures and showed it to Paypal who then decided the case in my favour.

I was once at the post office in the queue waiting to pick up a package. A woman a few people in front of me had ordered something from a higher end brand. The box was EMPTY. I told her to take a picture, and she refused to take it because someone had taken the item out!
I prefer it when brands ship their packaging in very boring, nondescript bags with a company that says something like "shipping warehouse" on it. Lacoste does that.

Years ago I worked retail and stopped in the store I worked at to exchange something I had purchased for my mom. In the US btw. We had a very generous return policy, if you didn't like it, return it no questions asked. It was close to the holidays and very busy, I was in a line behind a couple with two huge bags of summer season clothes. They were talking with another petson in line and saying how they only shopped at stores with good return policies and would return everything at the end of every season. And there was nothing we could do. Frustrating.

Unfortunately, sometimes there is some level of staff collusion. I know someone who is cabin crew and a colleague of theirs was found guilty of stealing. They were bringing in used YSL mascara etc and switching it for new items that were then sold to passengers during flights.
From the customer complaints, the airline was able to work out who the offender was and they were sacked.

When I used to work at a high street fashion shop as a teenager, we used to have 70%+ returns on a Sunday, worn dresses clearly worn - tan/ glitter/ makeup and smelt worn. As girls on minimum wage no older than 18 9/10, we used to return as faulty and put them in the write-off box. Mostly because of the low wages at the time (under 18 was £4.15), we weren't trained or staffed appropriately with enough security to deal with the conflict. Once a few of us began to enforce the rules, were abused, and even had store furniture thrown at us for a £30 dress, we never bothered to implement it. Not paid enough for that stress and risk. I was once even sold a girl a dress, saw her in the bar that night and then she gave it to her sister to try her luck when she saw me on the cash desk haha

These scamming tactics is why I think that luxury brands are for the poor because: 1. they buy things they cannot really afford just to show off, 2. they blatantly buy or sell fakes and do not pretend it's a real deal, 3. they scam people who are not used to luxury brands and sell/buy fakes.

Sophie, idea for a video, I sold a pair of sunglasses on a website that deals in designer items, the item was sold for less than £200.00 and so was sent direct to the buyer. Next thing I knew was that the payment was on hold , due to the buyer saying that the item was not as described. They were claiming that the screws had come out of the arm of the sunglasses and one of the arms was not attached. This item was sold as perfect, it was bought new to me and worn possibly once, but in perfect condition, no scratches etc. it’s clear to me that the screws would not have come loose in transit, and this person has potentially damaged the item or claimed the item is damaged to get some sort of discount… I am furious as I now don’t have the item or the money despite in knowing that the item was in brand new condition … ❤

Always take pictures and video of items you sell, before shipping to the reseller or buyer... 🧘‍♀️ That way you can debunk any claim that is clearly fraudulent.

    • @mr.ryan.nguyen

You need to tell buyers you are recording packing and mailing to prevent fraud. Don't show the buyers the videos but keep that for your record. But telling them about it prevents them from committing fraud.

I used to work in luxury retail in university. Omg, during holiday season people would buy dresses and shoes only to bring them back within the next week. We did not put them back on the floor. We damaged the product out if it was too far gone or transferred it to outlet.

One of our fashion stores in Australia does this with more formal/evening wear, were the fabric labels are on the outside, super long and noticeable. They found people were buying them for one event, usually school Formal/Prom, wearing them that one time, then returning them for a refund. It seems to have worked so far… unless you’re good at sewing and have matching cotton!

You are 100% correct about the fake returns. There was a video a while ago about a Chanel boots purchase from a top name department store and they turned out to be fake. It was the black leather quilted boots that were out a few years ago and they sold out in about 10 seconds, no one could find them anywhere.

I'm sorry to hear how scammers are ruining the resale market for sellers and customers alike! Another UA-cam influencer who sold a number of her bags said she'd only accept cash wired to her, no credit cards. Normally not smart for buyers to take such a risk, but she has been on YT long enough to be trusted as honest, and did sell all her bags. The dishonest people make it difficult for sellers to give buyers a better deal, because of the 30+% cut they must pay and consignment shops need the markup to be in business.

I think if these retailers want to start selling secound hand luxury they need to train the staff to spot fakes or have a few trained staff and have them be in charge of returns . They need to have a policy of returning where the items they are selling are heavily photographed and keep it for records for returns. I always get things authenticated and if I can’t get that done from a store and I’m not capable of spotting fakes I wouldn’t purchase. I’ve seen secound hand seller markets selling fakes of a bag charm I collect so I tend to trust no one xx

SOOO true about consignment shops just closing and taking all of your stuff. I had placed a ton of my handmade items in a new consignment shop, and not 3 months later she closed her shop and took everyones items without telling us. I’m sure everything is as you stated, but to me a lot of it doesn’t make sense.
Charge Back can be disputed/not accepted and then undergoes investigation, shipments are (or should be) insured etc.
One thing I did want to add though:
You mentioned commission companies going bust and one losing the item.
ACTUALLY that is QUITE common in many sectors and forms!!
I personally had a new vehicle at the dealership for 1st service, they went bankrupt while it was there, and I nearly couldn’t get it back!
I also had a storage company go bust while I was away, and everything was gone.
And someone I know bought a car from a dealership, it arrived, they went there, looked, did the final payment and waited for it to be ready (registered, prepped & checked). During that time the dealership went bankrupt and they actually got neither the car, nor the money back! The car still belonged to the manufacturer (as dealership didn’t pay it) and the money was part of the bankruptcy, putting them near last payout position, due to other massive amounts owed!
There are many more similar situations I personally encountered!
    Stay vigilant!
    Best wishes ❤

I use consignment stores and accept the lower payout than dealing with any fraud. I don't sell designer items online. I only sell items that are less likely to create fradulent sales and let consignment stores handle my higher end items.

Nordstroms is one that worries me. they have no return policy and I don't think those accepting the returns know how to spot the fake bags, shoes, sunglasses, clothes etc. i used to work in returns and we had a policy where we would send them to the department however the people there I don't think they knew how to spot one. in the big nordstroms that have little boutiques of x brand I have no clue how they spot them. it would be nice if they had tags like fashionphile from the beginning. certain brands now have these tags/long ribbon on them to deter this one that comes to mind is house of CB. again working returns there I have had so many disgusting things returned, one that got me everytime was shoes and skims, like I don't want to touch that. the nerve of people

I had something similar happen but from the other end. I bought a leather coat online but I just didn't like how it fit and looked on me. So, I booked a return but when it got to italy, I was told that the box was empty. So, they wanted to investigate and were holding my money. Luckly, I remembered that I should have the whole dhl pickup on my ring camera and I sent them the video of me literally handing the whole parcel and closing it in front of the dhl driver (this is right after brexit when you needed like 3 forms signed and stuff). So, I had proof that I had the coat and everything in the box. Clearly someone looked at one of the forms while it was in transit, saw how much the coat was and just took it. It was such a stupid idea to have the value of the object on the forms we needed to include.

They can easily fix this if they refuse returns for luxury items. They have final sale items for minor things. The staff aren't trained to identify fakes 😅

    • @FloorSugar

Not sure what it's like in other countries but you can't *just* refuse a return in the UK.

    • @christopherfeatherley
      @christopherfeatherley Місяць тому +2

@@FloorSugar Here in the states, in usual circumstances, you have within thirty days to return a product *unused/unopened* , or if the product was defective. There are, however, situations such as the item clearly been worn or damaged by the costumer, which a store can refuse a return. It doesn't happen often, as that's considered hurtful to the store for some reason (they probably wish to avoid a scene and write it as a tax write off). There's also stores such as Chanel, Nordstrom, TJ Maxx, if you paid through your credit/debit card, will issue only store credit.
Sophie is specifically referring to TK Maxx, which is TJ Maxx in the states, and they actually do have items that are final sale (usually heavily discounted items). I think, if possible, they can apply the final sale to their designer items, it may prevent fraud. Of course I'm no way in familiar with the laws around the world. It varies immensely here as is 😅

I think that payment on hold rule needs to be updated and could only be held after the item is shipped and the seller receives the exact item. Otherwise anyone can claim anything and scammers are looking for these loopholes. Pathetic people, really, with all the time and effort they waste they could start legitimate business and prosper.

Once I went in store and they found my previous purchase from 2015 and fixed a bag after years and years! I don’t think I’ll order on line again though. I worry about the delivery driver.
