“Buck Owens” is probably my favorite Melvins song of all time. If not my favorite, def in my top 3.

It’s the Melvins’ White Album for better or for worse. Anyone watching Mark’s videos love his extensive contributions to the songs and it’s because of Mark that this era of the band is so memorable. Buzz and Dale together with other bassists have made really good songs, but never with the same level of reckless abandon as they did with Mark. The Bootlicker, Maggot, and Crybaby records somewhat reach similar grounds but it’s not the same. Going forward they really dialed in the hard rock metal thing and have rarely deviated from it.

Everything contributes to the end result, and that was a pretty good combination of factors for that particular time. Thanks for your thoughts.

Sterilized>Lacrimosa>Skin Horse is one of the most epic sequences in the entire Melvins album catalog. WOW- RELEASE THAT TEN MINUTE LACRIMOSA PLEASE! All the CD bonus tracks were also released on the Interstellar Overdrive 10", and then later included on Electroretard. Another great video!

Wow, so glad to have lived long enough to enjoy your insights into my favorite age of music! I got you to forge Lori's signature on a vinyl copy of Bullhead back in the late 90s when you guys did a quick show at my local record store, it was great! Buzz played bass and you did vocals and guitar, and Dale was playing a cheesy drum set that was like the store owner's brother's or something, good times! Pretty sure it was the HELMET MELVINS TODAY IS THE DAY tour but I'm also old and not remember so well..
I know you guys played ther blue note in colombia MO the night before and Misissippi nights in STL that night, Vintage Vinyl was the record store, still open too!
I remember the lolapalooza tour and my friend says oh no looks like Mark D got cancer or something but I had seen the COWS and knew it was Kevin Rutmanis, Ol swivel hips! Haha you always rocked and thanks again for making these videos! Still have the CD case to STAG with the hype sticker on the front from almost 30 years ago! the disc has been replaced at least 3 times though heh
    Stay cool!

Thanks Mark for all the insights, I love Stag. The 'disjointed' feel is kind of what lends this album its distinct personality in the Melvins' catalogue, I feel. It's Melvins' White Album.

Mark, you asked, so...I have a 10" purple transparent vinyl that came out on Man's Ruin Records in '96 or '97. The front cover says MELVINS Interstellar Overdrive over a blurry photo of a Black light bulb.
The back cover lists the tracks as:
    1. Interstellar Overdrive (All of side A)
    2. Bar X the rocking M/Tipping the Lion B
The cover folds out into a 20"x10" gatefold which has black and white art of Japanese Taiko drummers and Production/Engineer/songwriting and performer credits.
The sticker on one side is a fuchsia Melvins logo over a 5 pointed star, the other side has an image of a cat with a crucifix between it's eyes.
I don't see the date anywhere on the gatefold or vinyl, but, I bought this in Toronto and I left there originally in '96, and then permanently in '97. I hope you get a copy of this record for your collection.

@@livefromtheskycabin1043 Hey Thanks for that. I did actually have that original Man's Ruin 10" but I gave it away a long time ago as it sounds like you did.... The B take of "Tipping" does sound like a Big Cheese box. Nothing grinds like that does, especially for bass.

Thanks again for making all of your videos, they are really great for us listeners!
I stopped the video and wanted to leave this comment, because just last night I was talking with some friends and we were talking about the wildest shows we had ever been to with the wildest crowds.
I've seen a lot of shows, everything from Tori Amos to GWAR and some of the craziest have been Slayer. And also Rage Against the Machine and The Ramones, those were really rowdy crowds as well.
BUT the wildest crowd I was in during a show was DEFINITELY a Melvins/Helmet show in 1997 at the old Ziggy's in Winston Salem, NC.
When Helmet came on the place just went bonkers.
I wasn't even a Helmet fan, I just went to see you guys, so I was completely not expecting everyone to go so crazy.
It was really, really crazy and I've never seen such a rowdy crowd.
I can say that I don't remember that particular crowd being nasty to you guys that night so that's a good thing.

    • @MarkDeutrom
      @MarkDeutrom  Рік тому +2

Thanks for watching ! The Helmet audience was absolutely challenging. We started making the shows weirder, inviting people up on stage to play with the band, quiz show scenarios etc. At one show someone came up to me and demanded his money back. I tried to convince him he had seen a special show but he wasn't going for it. In the end I gave him $20 and said Adios.
