    We own a 13yo female kooiker. She is a great dog. Intelligent, but sensitive, especially to loud noises. When any of us work outside she is on self appointed guard duty. Once a black bear came into our yard when my wife was gardening. She charged the bear and sent it over the stone wall back into the woods. Everyone who meets her is impressed with how calm she is. Friendly but also aloof. Sheds a lot. We went to Holland to get her which was a great family experience.

    My new favorite informative Kooikerhondje video! I live in Philadelphia, PA with my Tibetan Spaniel and Kooikerhondje(who I added last month!) but it took me over 2 years to research the perfect breed for my 2nd dog and everything kept coming back to Kooikers. It was very difficult to find a responsible breeder that checked on the boxes(participants in conformation, dog sports, health tests, involved with the Dutch parent club, and mentors new owners in the breed) but after networking with 3 or 4 dozen people, I was finally able to narrow down my options of excellent breeders. Now I have my dream dog! He perfectly compliments my Tibetan Spaniel, which is so wonderful.

      I love this breed but if you are in the USA be very very cautious of who you get a puppy from. I would network heavily in the breed and even connect with the Dutch Parent club breeders to provide reviews and experiences with breeders. Many in the USA breed for profit and glory and not for the betterment of the breed.

    We are always home so my Ollie is always really calm and sweet. I think he would have made a good service dog. When I have dropped things he would pick them up and hand them to me. He was always very gentle with me. I noticed that he does not respond to yelling. But to gentle teaching. We do not have a fenced in backyard but he has never run away. He always stays close to our family. One time my mom was out in the garden and she accidentally came inside without him and when she remembered 15 minutes later, he was just standing in front of the door. He hadn’t moved at all. On walks he is a good listener. And does not approach other dogs unless we say it’s ok.
    Also if we put food on a low table that is eye level with him and leave the room. He does not eat it. He only eats things that we give him. Unless he finds them on a walk then we have to tell him no. Lol
    We picked him because he was so adorable. I loved his ears. He’s 12 years old now. He’s the best dog ever,

    I ADORE my Angel-Bebe' Kooikerhondje! I discovered her in a rescue, having been badly abused and neglected. S
    he is in top form now after I have been her human for over two and one/half years. It took me a bit of time to figure our what breed she was. My brother is a Veterinarian and we take great care of her. My little girl is so sweet, yet she can be a fierce watch and protective dog as well, even though she weighs less than 20 lbs.
    Everywhere I take her she attracts groups of people as she is so distinctive and beautiful. Due to her past trauma, she does NOT like it when I may have to leave her at home. When she became my doggy to love, she was afraid that I would get upset with her for being on my bed..
    I love her to be there and of course, NOW she loves it too Every night when we go to sleep she wishes to lay ABOVE my heard on our pillows so she can keep watch and can fly over the top of me if she hears anything amiss.
    She can become scared easily and of course, she is GREAT at influencing people to speak more quietly, otherwise she runs and hides under or behind my bed.
    When she first came to be my companion, I wondered how in the world I was going to get this terrified little dog-being into my shower to bathe her.
    The very next minute, she was IN the shower with me, begging for me to pick her up and give her a bath, she WANTED me to bathe her.
    She usually is outside the shower curtains peaking in to lick my leg or is sitting inside the back of the shower to be near me.
    She LOVES chasing her laser-light around our home, and everyone laughs SO HARD< when they watch her springing around the place, with her tail up and furled with her ears at a piquant angel chasing the light down and barking at it.
    My cat who is a small Russian blue female always thinks that everything is about HER, and she commences to fling herself into the air leaping over and around the dog. Hilarious!
    Angel-Bebe' is very gentle with the kitty, GraySEE there is NO chasing. HOWEVER< when Miss Kitty teases Angel, Angel has permission to teach her a little lesson with a bit of a snarl and a nip if needed. ( Miss Kitty can be a little stinker. ) She is still trying to figure out how and why I brought this smaller dog into our home without her permission. LOL
    Kitty is very bereft when I and pup are gone and wants us back.
    I wish so much that my complex had a fully fenced back yard. However, we do not and dogs must be leashed. I am trying to find some kind of lead or something that I can attach to a tree in the back yard in order for her to be able to play and leap outside and to tech her to play FRISBEE.
    My Angel has such a lovely build and conformation and such long soft hair ( now that she has been fed and treated with love, it has grown in again.)
    She does not have the perfect white strip up the center of her face, however, in every other way she fits and matches other photos of Kookerhondje's and the breed behavior personality profile fits her perfectly.
    I am still working on some of her behaviors ( such as barking etc.) that she must have had to do in her former places of living.
    She IS a great little wathdog, a loving companion ( she is LOYAL to me in spades.) Yet, for those people she deems trustworthy she opens up her little heart.
    I would appreciate being given information for her retraining away from behaviors that are counter-productive as well as the best recommendations for buying grooming tools that will not hurt her ahs she is super sensitive to those cares. Thanks so much, Bonny from the USA.

    • @awalkingsong
      @awalkingsong 3 роки тому

      I’m not trying to burst your bubble and without an Embark DNA test your dog is likely not a Kooiker.
      1, they are rare and aren’t produced frequently enough and breeders carefully vet who their buyers are that they have a pretty high accuracy for their puppies to go to good homes that won’t surrender or abandon their dogs and have legally binding contracts requiring them to return the puppy(for their entire life time) back to them if any reason they can’t keep them. Also, most are on spay/neuter contracts as well, to reduce accidental litters or backyard breeders from exploiting one they get from a breeder.
      Another aspect, so many dogs look like Kooikers by phenotype that are actually other breeds. Usually Beagles mixed with Sheltie or Border Collie or Daschund. These breeds can sometimes have similar traits to Kooikers when you roll them all together.

    • @awalkingsong
      @awalkingsong 3 роки тому

      @@henrybroger this is a rare breed that isn’t being masses produced. There are some shady breeders out there all throughout the world but the most place puppies in good homes so they don’t need to end up in rescue. This is the benefit of rare breeds and small gene pools, we all often know of each other and can keep track in our database of litters and dogs and the growth of the breed, as well as the ones that pass away.
      I highly encourage going to a responsible breeder that OFA health tests their dogs, provides the corresponding Chic# to their registration name, photos of both parents, and tells you about the reason they chose that specific pair and their breeding goals. Some breed because they say they are Dutch and know the breed very well, some say because they have a male and a female that is why, no, they should be able to articulate how the pairing compliment each other and what they are trying to retain in their breeding program and what they are trying to breed away from. Hope this helps!

    domestic ducks or lure ducks that attracted wild ducks into a pond,
    then the little dog emerged from behind bushes or fences that had been placed around the pond.
    and only the wild ducks are afraid of it and fled to the other side of the pond right into a funnel net.
    where the net became the narrowest was a corner / bend and ended in a crate or cage.
    in dutch they have a phrase "going out of the pipe" is also derived from that,
    if you go out the pipe/funnel and then round the corner you definitely die.

    Only thing I wish this mentioned was how this isn’t a good dog breed for young couples, babies or small children, busy career types, or people with very unpredictable or erratic changing lives. They are extremely sensitive in nature and this often gets very over looked, unfortunately.

    • @awalkingsong
      @awalkingsong 3 роки тому

      @@kaiwoolner-pratt9196 so, that’s where it gets tricky. You will be home a lot but what about when your life changes and you go back to work? The dog could develop separation anxiety because you went from always being around to now too busy and not home AND in a new environment. Traveling abroad can be extremely risky and challenging. A lot of people I have spoken to that are interested in this breed really seem to want a pretty dog that is very easy going and go with the flow. This I encourage them to meet more sound breeds like English Springer Spaniel, Field Spaniel, or English Cocker Spaniel, if you fancy the sporting breeds/spaniels. They are much more forgiving of changes and environmental factors.

      It’s unlikely she’s a Kooiker, since they are extremely rare and not mass produced. So it’s not common to have one just randomly pop up in rescue, even mixes. But Kooikers share similar traits with other breeds in both appearance and characteristics, that they can almost blend together. Do the Embark if you do the test, it has the biggest Kooiker Data base than the other companies.

    My Angel-Bebe' actually LIKES small children that are gentle and have been taught how to behave with dogs.
    She does NOT like most men however, as she was abused badly by one or more and escaped or was dumped on a large freeway interchange.
    They could hardly catch her as she was running for her life. She is an older dog and had no microchip that could be found. With her gentle nature, she is a positive barometer for people to modulate their voices
    She waits for permission to eat her food and for nearly everything else as well.
    She has not exhibited the prey drive towards my kitty or towards other animals.
    Larger dogs scare her. She loves chihuahuas and I figure that she had a best friend who was one in the past as she tries to coax the others one that live across the fence from me to be her friends.
    As I mentioned in my first post I need guidance into training for her rehab from trauma I have been working with her to become my Service Dog.
    She can bark too much and want to get up on people.
    She has been hit on her head so people cannot reach their hands down at her.
    I always instruct people that visit my home, to sit down and let her look at them from my lap first, more eye-to eye on the same level.
    Share your thoughts with me, I would appreciate them.
