As a self study learner myself, I know for sure that motivation can be really unstable. What keeps me going is actually discipline. It is so imprinted in my mind already, that every day study session is like any other daily activity
That's great! How do you stay disciplined? Do you have a strict study plan?
@@LindieBotes actually i really enjoy studying. And whenever i feel tired or when i try to make excuses to not to study i just remind myself how cool it is and what i can achieve. I do not have strict study plan. I really like making a plan on the same day or maybe the day before. I dont like the feeling of being pressured by schedules etc. So for example when I feel tired i just do some easier stuff or revise. It just became a habit for me now, so I do not think much if it tbh ^^
@@PaulinaKarolina Same here, I have continued learning 2 languages on a fixed daily schedule and for almost by doing it a month it became my habit; no pressure or felt like a tough routine anymore In fact, I deliberately didn't study for one day as the intention of resting and unexpectedly I sense myself so out of my routine/messed up or felt like nothing, blank and even impractical on that day because it has become my habit or you might also call it a structured discipline Lindie 😊
@@turkishentertainment5309 haha same! If I decide to rest for one day I feel that something is missing. Of course I have days without studying for example when I travel. But on a daily basis is just a part of my life 😊
I have the same problem. That's why I'm still a beginner after studying 2 languages for about 2 years
I prefer self-studying because I've been learning languages as a hobby next to my busy studies at university and the idea of having to commit to any study plan for languages is terrifying for me, especially when I also have to prepare for a tutor. But, as you also mentioned, self-studying comes with the risk of accidentally learning mistakes because there's no one to correct them and I think that might actually be one of my biggest fears holding me back from progressing more in my language learning. Maybe I should find a language partner to help me get over that hurdle until I might one day feel ready to try out a tutor.
I am a self learner so I do self study languages and I have already learned English, Turkish and German language in addition to right now I am learning Spanish 🤞🏻 Love from Pakistan 🇵🇰❤️
To me self-study is the best way. I enjoy learning whenever I want to, however I want to, which language I want to... Some days I want to do Turkish exercises, other days I want to do Greek exercises... Some days I want to write down new words, other days I just want to listen to vlogs or asmr videos... I really enjoy learning by myself but also I'm so grateful to you for recommending Busuu cause it gave me the opportunity to meet native Turkish speakers and check how correctly I speak without stressing out too much. 🖤 It's true that motivation can go away and we need to have discipline (in fact I had a 7-9 year long break from Turkish due to anxiety and unstable mentality 😅💔) but we always go back to our true passions when the time is right. So I discovered that I absolutely adore Turkish and Greek and I want finally to learn to speak fluently. (And to become a translator hopefully...) Now I'm learning every day of my life using many different resources like phone apps, textbooks, Duolingo, Busuu, I'm reading articles or magazines, I'm listening to music or podcasts, I'm watching asmr and vlog videos on UA-cam in Turkish and Greek, etc. In fact I used to study Greek at uni but only for like 3-4 years. The other 4 years I spent learning all by myself and it's working perfectly for me. 🇬🇷🇹🇷 Anyways... Greetings from Bulgaria. 🇧🇬 I love your channel because it gives me a lot of inspiration and motivation.
I tried study alone once, but is very difficult for me, because I have no one to talk or help me when I need it. I guess that is possible take self-study when you have at least some knowledge of its study language.
I have a teacher and I feel safe and good taking classes once a week, it works well with me.

In starting tutor is best but after knowing the basics and how to form sentences and basic conversation ❤ we should learn by ourselves 😊😊😊❤❤ well you are also a good language learner and motivates us all the time. Thanks a lot 🎉🎉😊❤
Interesting approach! My favourite method is to combine self-study (fun) with classes (though material). I think a good teacher is important to understand the grammar and more complex topics and have some external motivation, but I'd rather go for group classes, which are usually more affordable, and less exhausting (you can listen to others practicing and learn from their mistakes, but you don't have to be focused all the time). And it implies self-studying in form of revisions too.
When I studied Hungarian as my major at the university, at the beginning I worked hard to memorize the material from classes (I don't know how I would have made it without a teacher to guide me, and learning in a group of similarly helpless people was a lot of fun). After a couple of months I focused my self-studying rather on watching youtube in that language (while also doing my homework and flashcards). This year I tried to recreate that while learning French, but it was much harder for me to organise revisions for my classes when language learning is no longer my main responsibility, so I learned new material mostly during classes and watched French content on yt and treated that as self-studying 😉

I definitely prefer to start with self study, give myself a chance to explore, wiggle around, get some bare bones familiarization, build up some foundation, and then get a tutor for structure + extra fire under my butt. xD It also lets me help my tutor too, since I have more of an understanding of my needs or what directions I want to take, so they can better help me with my goals. :) Then it's just a mix of self study + tutor(s).

Lovely video Lindie! For me, I prefer self-studying as I have certain methods that I've adopted over time that have became more suited to my learning style in general, but I also speak to natives in language exchange groups, and always open-minded about being corrected

Yep I like them ok, but yes ,one person is CLEARLY above the level of lesson! One is scared or slow...and depending on the teacher 1 person will dominate the lesson.
Yeah, I took some group lessons for Korean last year. It was meant for people who had taken a year of Korean classes, and who had basically just achieved the A1 level. And yet there was this one person who had been studying Korean for over 5 years who always knew all the answers to the teacher's questions and how to use the grammar. She was taking this class instead of a higher leveled one because the other levels had classes in person only, while ours was online, but still. It probably wasn't very useful for her, and prevented the rest of us from being able to practice what we were learning.

I can't study Chinese completely on my own. I need a tutor, because the language is so hard omg. I find Italki very handy for my needs, I'm sure you've already used it😃
I learned English by myself by just having it as a subject in high school (I had a great teacher) and 4 courses as part of my major in CS. For Portuguese and Mandarin I enrolled in courses that have 15 people of less. I don't like the pressure of being only me asnwering questions lol. For Portuguese I had lessons in presence, but having to commute 1.5 hours going and 1.5 coming back home wasn't cool specially because the course was from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. twice a week. For Mandarin I take lessons twice a week, group of 10ish people at same time frame but at home, being online gives me so much more joy.
Lindie, your videos always come across with one of my matters at the moment, I jsut started French and it is definetely better for me to start a language with a tutor.

Hello Lindie! I watch you every time when I have a stuck and I struggle to progress and I try learning every time when I have time. Only one things with I have is motivation to do it. My English is so far from perfect but I don't give up. I need to write about me on Spanish, because is a wonderful tips for a beginner and maybe I will be start speaking a bit on this language. I don't surrounded by people who learn English, Spanish but really believe that everything is possible and someday I will be speak perfect on English and Spanish too. I think that the own study is for me the best method to learn - in my opinion the exam are very stressful for me and I don't do that of myself.
What I nowadays start to think is that listening podcasts and watching videos is the real way to start learning a language.
Grammar, spelling, writing, reading is really the icing on the cake.
Even for native speakers, everything started with listening and speaking daily.
I suck at self studying because I've a lot of difficulties making and especially sticking to a schedule. (ADHD) If I've got class from time to time, even if it's only every two weeks, I'm way more likely to stick to it and be more successful at self studying in between the lessons. On group sessions: I'm currently in a perfect set-up (for me) as I'm learning a less popular language at uni and there is only one other student in my class. Our level and learning speed match up very well, so I get to experience the pros of group settings but none of the cons.
As someone who did self studying for a few years, I think I’m at a point in learning Japanese where I’m finally going to hit the Genki textbooks I bought 3 years ago. I know I need a good refresher since it’s rusty & it’s been a while that I went back on my notes besides going over Kanji with Kanji Garden
(Highly recommend the app to help learn Kanji & challenge your long term memory) I’m trying tutor trail lessons but it’s difficult when I don’t understand about 80-90% of what my teacher says most of the time & guessing. What really helps us that for my 4 tail lessons it is going back on what I remember learning when I used Duolingo. I know I can’t do group lessons for now because I want the time to ask Qs & go at a steady pace.
I'm beginner B1 (listening about A2) and my lack of motivation is so huge right now because of PROGRESS!! My teacher keeps assuring me that this is NORMAL! But holy crap... it is EXTREMELY demotivating!! I can't stand it. I actually get so frustrated with myself that I want to cry... (maybe sometimes I do) and it really really really sucks because I'm in the Us and I study french. It's so hard to keep up with that progression when there is literally NO FRENCH around me...
Why not add an exchange partner!

I use Google Translate to check my pronunciation. Unfortunately it doesn't tell me what I said, but only what it thinks I said. Is there a way to know what I really said, even if I said total nonsense?
It's even more frustrating if I am sure I said a certain phrase, but I read a totally different answer.

I'm all for self studying, however I've noticed as I try to strengthen my intermediate skills, I find myself wanting a tutor. Too many native speakers won't correct me or teach me the natural way to say something, "I get what you were trying to say." But what I was trying to say is wrong, right? So how would YOU say it? 😫
Still, for those who may not be able to do that financially, I have also started practicing with other learners who have a level about the same as mine or higher. They usually will point out if I say something that sounds awkward.
I know what you mean about reaching a certain level and people just stop correcting you because they understand 😂 we still need help people!!!
