Saw them play at the Staerkel Planetarium in Champaign, IL in 2008. They had the same trio as well as a projection artist. It was a beautiful show and I'm so glad I was able to see them play live. RIP Brian. 😢
I flew to Chicago from Seattle to see them play at Kranky records’ twentieth anniversary with an orchestra. I will always, always remember that set. One of the most influential groups to me of all time.
I was at that gig. The atmosphere was so reverential; everyone was so happy to see them live. Profoundly delicate. That's a lovely video, Leagues. I hadn't ever heard them interviewed till now. That 'sound of highways' anecdote is gold. RIP Brian. You will be missed.
this isn't leagues btw! I worked for FN and conducted these interviews along with Steve. The show was absolutely unforgettable, even if it was in a "stinky rock club".
Apologies @ignoreradioshoegaze. I meant no disrespect. It was an exceptional experience, that gig, but (kinda funny story) my new g/f (still together) was dragged to this gig by a mate who adored SOTL and me, and we were explicit in telling her their music was all about the 'atmosphere and the ambience'. Well, as you know, it was a captive audience in a tightly packed Whelans, straining to hear every last delicate draw of the cello bow or violin... pure... sound... when she took a sip of her drink and the ice cubes clinked EVERYONE at the bar turned to her as if to say 'shush'. It was hilarious to me and my mate. She was never a big fan of theirs as a result, not because of SOTL, but their fans.
I remember when he did a performance at Kims Video in nyc. Crowd was around him and he got going and then put the instrument down and walked away, leaving us all there with the soundscape still going. Eventually people started just milling around.
Their music is so beautiful and powerful, it really is ambient at its greatest. But I wonder how they did their sound, is anyone knows what instruments or software they were using?
Brian was my uncle. So great to hear his voice, I miss him a lot
My deepest sympathies to you and your family, Brian made some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard.
So sorry for your loss. He is sorely missed.
Sorry for your loss. Your uncle made some amazing music. Definitely had a special place in my life
Sorry for your loss, your uncle created some stellar music, and has helped me with my insomnia.
Your uncle was /is my hero. ❤
Rest in stars friend.
I listen to their beautiful music almost every day. Especially in the garden. R.I.P ❤🙏
Damn. Had to come back here to pay my respects. RIP Brian
Godspeed, Brian.
Thank you for all the wonderful music.

I also feel so grateful to have been able to see them live. Very special times.

As my mate said, Stars Of The Lid, a band so ambient, the sound of ice melting is too loud.
😂 stunning
Rest in peace

Rest in peace Brian McBride ❤
Thanks a lot for sharing this, I really enjoy their music

Such sad news. Polar Bear Records sends it thoughts to your loved ones. The Hare & Hounds in Birmingham UK were life-changing performances.
Rare genius
Man, Adam does not like to talk does he?
Love Forever
Thanks for uploading, very rare to see an interview. Can anyone hear the last question? Can't seem to makeout what they're saying
I asked what would happen if he swapped careers with the other Brian McBride :)
rest in peace
