    I currently have a Moriesian mare. She is the best of both worlds. She has more try than any other horse I have ever met and the kindest soul. I can only hope that she gets the health and long life of the Morgan vs the Friesian. She loves to get out on the trail.
    If I had to go back to ranch work I would want my Quarab mare. She could go anywhere, anytime, all day long. Nothing ever startled her. She was 14 hands of pure get it done and then give me more. The Arabian side was just amazing!! I never could wear her out. The Quarter horse side gave her more bulk.
    Actually my foundation Quarter horse/Paint stock gelding would be the last one I would pick for ranch work out of all the horses I have owned. As odd as that might seem. He just didn't have the endurance for that hard of work.

    I have a 3/4 Friesian filly with Tietse lines. Her QH lines are Impressive and Two Eyed Jack, but she looks full Friesian, the baroque style. And a 17.3 old style TWH gelding. One of those would also work well in the mountains. My TWH would lap all the QH that we rode with in the Mountains just because he had longer legs and also endurance. That wasn’t even in a gait, just by walking.

    Cool project. Fun.
    I will never forget first laying eyes on a Friesian in the movie "LadyHawke". I don't think I'd seen a more beautiful horse in my life and that long flowing mane and tail just blew me away. WOW!

    Interesting choice, I've only ever met one in real life and it was on a brand inspection, a local banker owned him and was moving him to Kalispell so she needed a brand inspection done on him and she was in my brand district so I ended up being the one to do the inspection. Nice horse, the difference in build and self carriage from a quarter horse is even more evident close up than I was expecting. I'm a warmblood fan myself, I rode a lot of them in Europe and the UK when I was living over there when I was much younger. The 1/2 draft thing here in Montana is very interesting to me. What I would like personally is a 1/2 draft(from a draft breed with no feathers), 1/2 TB, mare that I could put to a very quiet minded QH stud of foundation lines. I think the horses I would get out of that would be real close to warmbloods in conformation, temperament and performance without the insane price tag that comes with an Oldenburger, Holsteiner, Hanoverian, Trakehner etc.. If that doesn't work out for me though I'll probably just end up biting the bullet and shelling out the blood and money for another warmblood. I agree with you 100% that a good trainer should be training for other disciplines and breeds not just cow horses. I've trained jumpers, carriage horses, and a pile of ranch horses etc. but the most fun I ever had training a horse in another discipline was one I did for mounted archery. That was a hoot!

    My daughter & I do the AQHA All Around and have daughters of CHIPS HIT CHOCOLATE, BLAZING HIT & ZIPPOS MR GOODBAR. We bred the ZMGB mare to our line bred DECK OF STARS stallion for a late Feb/early March foal. Having said d that we would LOVE to have a couple of Fresiens (sp) because they look so comfortable to ride. We also would like to do a bit of classical dressage which they are well suited for. I look forward to the coming years to see how your filly progresses, how easy she is to train, etc. Thanks for doing this. BUT - what is her name? Both registered & barn names. 😄😅

      Her registered name is Valorie’s Venus but we call her Betty. Really loving her so far! Very trainable and smart but I’m used to geldings and mares always impress me with their brains and grit. 😂 The lady I bought her from let me come ride her mother before I committed and they are really fun to ride and incredibly agile for their size. Her mother can spin well. Certainly not fast like a Reiner but controlled, pretty, and fluid. First video on beginning groundwork with her will be out soon. Thanks for watching!

      @@Stonefieldranch I agree, mares & stallions are much better than geldings as far as having a brain. I actually get along better with stallions. The nicest one I ever ride/owned was a son of ONE GUN named HOLLY GUN. Loved that guy. Good luck with Betty. I look forward to watching your adventures.

      I bought mine from a lady in Honeyville, Utah who has a daughter of Tjalbert. She shipped semen from the Friesian Connection in Dorr Michigan. The Friesian Connection imports studs on multi-year leases and I think they have some of the better bloodlines in North America.

    • @Stonefieldranch
      @Stonefieldranch  Рік тому +3

      We might not be talking about the same kind of endurance. In an effort to keep cattle calm, most mountain cattle work is done at a walk or trot with a lot of climbing which is why a lot of cowboys in this area breed half drafts. Certainly not the same type of endurance we would be looking for in 50-100 mile endurance races that something like an Arabian, or Gaited Breed would be better suited for. My theory is really based around their long legs, strong bone, and muscle structure that should make climbing steep hills covered in sage brush and snowberry bushes, more effortless. Of course, it’s just a theory hence the reason we explained this is somewhat of an experiment.

      @@Stonefieldranch oh so you bought that filly for breeding crosses in the future! That makes more sense. Having owned Friesians for 20 years I can tell you that they are not well suited for long hours of work in the mountains. If you think of where they come from and what their jobs was through out the ages not to mention their confirmation it’s easy to understand why they made (and still make) the ultimate carriage horse. If it had been me I would have gone with a mustang or a canadian horse for what you are planing on doing.

      @@Stonefieldranch it's so odd you don't know what the canadian horse is, genetically they cluster with percheron/breton/belgians. their foundation stock (from 1665) were french war horses before they became the modern draught breeds. the 'percherons' in the joe hancock line of quarter horses were likely the canadian horse.
      The Legend of the Canadian Horse: Genetic Diversity and Breed Origin - Oxford Academic
      "The legend of the Canadian horse is a fascinating chapter of North American history. It is the story of North America’s first equine breed that was the foundation bloodstock to many American breeds like the American Saddlebred, Standardbred, (possibly) Appaloosa, Northern Plains Mustang, and the Morgan. The Canadian traces its ancestry to horses sent from Louis XIV’s royal stables to the colony of New France in the mid-17th century (Jones 1947). In spite of the colony’s harsh climate and the absence of forage, shelter and pasture, the foundation herd of less than a 100 animals flourished to 30 000 by 1784 (Gendron 1993). The Canadian earned the nickname, “the little iron horse,” for its storied feats of strength and endurance, regularly outclassing more muscular and heavy boned horses (Langelier 1920). The Canadian studbook was established in 1889 and is the oldest active horse breed registry in North America (Gendron 2010). In 1998 and 2002, respectively, Quebec and Canada officially recognized the Canadian as a heritage breed and the national horse for its intrinsic role in forming the 2 nations. Today the breed languishes in relative obscurity on the brink of extinction with a confirmed population of 2456 pure Canadian horses and is classified as threatened by The Livestock Conservancy."

      Most of the Friesan’s I’ve seen are for parades especially dancing Mexican culture stuff. The owners say they have quite low endurance not suitable for long trail rides or work. What are your thoughts on Andalusian? They have roots as a war horse most have big bones and are sturdy.

    Because of all the inbreeding to get that perfect color black horse, the average age of a fresian horse is 16 Years old. They have many issues..dwarfism, skin issues, and they cannot tolerate the heat. From what I read they also colic a lot. That is why there is now a high demand in Fresian Sport horses, and I have seen some really beautiful ones.
