    They've only recently done this store up from the 80's look of Tesco. The bold red and white. My Mum worked at Tesco Watford when it opened in 1988.

    I remember visiting this place for the first time in the summer of 85. I got off the bus and headed into the store and the air was filled with music; Live Aid was just getting started in Wembley stadium. I went on to work there for a couple of years as a student in the early-to-mid 90s.

    Tesco Extra Wembley is the location of this store. Looks quite different on the outside now! Also contains a Nando's. I moved to the area not that long ago so I assume they only changed the exterior as the interior still kind of looks like this minus the red and white. Like it doesn't look to me like they just knocked it down and rebuilt it and can't find any mention of that being done. Don't think the bank is in there anymore either.

The world he's referring to no longer exists, so there's no need for anyone to cancel anything. Nobody would make a comment like him today, unless they were seriously trapped in the past, because the world of "housewives" he's referring to is long gone.

    The peak of Tesco was shortly after the turn of the new millennium, up until around 2012. The introduction of Everyday Value bumped up the prices of baseline items significantly. Then, once they started to replace it with dubious fake farms and weak tertiary brands, the store lost out to Aldi and is now very much struggling to regain its crown.

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka Рік тому +1

      They also used to have a much wider range of lines, but have very much cut back on them to try and focus on price. They're definitely not what they once were.

    I remember the food counters where you get customiised slices of cheese and meat were incredibly popular, so much so that you had to take a piece of paper with a number on it and had to wait for 20 people or more to go first. You can see the displays showing 00 which would slowly advance to your number. These days you go to a such a counter and get served straight away. I wonder why they are so unpopluar now.

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka Рік тому +1

      My guess is that it's because a lot of the items they sold at those counters are now pre-packaged and you just pick them up off the shelf.

    • @AurumUsagi
      @AurumUsagi Рік тому

      Though the problem the elimination of the counters has caused is that it you can no longer buy precise quantities, and unless you can find other uses for the surplus, it's more food and packaging waste. At least Waitrose and Morrisons have kept their counters.

      it comes down to economics.. 1 person buying a slice of ham isn't gonna fund the staff needed to run it (that isn't cheap) . also online shoppers, folk don't buy counter stuff.

    • @heene
      @heene 9 місяців тому

      A year later they have now mostly been completely taken away by the supermarkets. It must also be quite an effort to keep all that loose food laid out and tidy and in a clean enviroment instead of just slinging packets on shelves.

    • @MrRickytuk
      @MrRickytuk 4 місяці тому

      You pay a hefty premium at the dele counter vs pre-packed these days. There is also shrinkflation. Pre-packed ham would come by Kilo so if you only wanted a small amount, the dele was the best choice and it didn't carry the price premium it does now.

The travelators annoyed the hell out of me as those without trolleys didn't follow TFL standing on the right principles; as did the extra long queue for the self checkouts and the poor staff running around to correct issues and validate. No more deli counter, no more butchers' counter - absolutely no fish counter! What happened to those neon signs and terrazzo floors? Oh and obvious security measures such as barriers. As the man says in the video, people shopped at Tesco because they preferred it to the High Street. You can't force people to go where they don't want to. Also, I think the High Street's demise had deeper roots. In days past, one of the major reasons for going to a High Street was to pay bills. That disappeared when Direct Debits became popular. The world has changed bit by bit, and will continue to do so. There's nothing to say that Tesco will still be with us in 50 years' time either. You can't stop change.
