Tai-Thai people have had tradition of tattooing their bodies to distinguish themselves from Chinese (because Chinese don't tattoo). It's been practiced for thousands of years. The same cannot be said about Khmer tattoos, as there were no records in history that Khmer tattooed their bodies. Angkor wat and ancient statues have no trace of body tattoos. No French ever record of Khmer tattoos, no photos older than 20 years old (internet age). Most Sak Yants patterns that Khmer practiced in modern days are copied (or inspired) from sources of Thai Sakyant photos such as from Pinterest, UA-cams, and Googles searches. And if you notice, those "Khmer Sakyant Masters" are mostly young people. That says something about lineage (or the lack thereof) in Cambodia.

@@mongkulthach6463 Yeah, and the Khmer learn how to read and write "Khmer alphabets" to begin with is because Siam sent teachers/monks to Cambodia. There were no schools in Cambodia before 1900s Before, the reading and writings were taught in temples through Siamese monks. After the French took over Cambodia that's when they started opening schools in 1900s.

I believe the receiving of the tattoo is more a ceremonial event which should be done by a tattoo master (Ajarn) for it to have a full and correct spiritual meaning. I might be wrong of course, but there's also nothing stopping anyone from doing these sort of tattoos. Personally (and I'm not Buddhist) I'd rather have it carried out by an Ajarn for true authenticity :)

Cambodians always claim Thai culture for reviviing their "unknown" or "lost" cultures during Khmer dark age and Khmer rougue. There is no single evidence to link with Khmer.
The reason that Thai use Khmer script in Sak Yant because in the past. All Thai buddist books used Ancient Khmer script (Khom script) to write Sanskrit ( Indian language ). It is easy to translate from Indian orignal buddist script ( which was written in Pallava ) directly to Ancient Khmer one-by-one and maintain the orignal sounds and word-structures. Other than that there is nothing about Khmer. Cambodian always falsely claim Thai cultures whatever is popular. They will start to make fake history and spread this false info to fool foreigners.
All geometric patterns , pictures are from Thai people. Tai people use tattoo since ancient time. ( Check Tai people tattoo. you will see tons of different designs with different scripts from India , Myanmar , Lanna, Lao , and Thailand )
If you go to the north, for ex Chaing mai. Thai people there use Ancient Lanna script or Myanmar for Sak Yant too. It does not mean that Sak Yant is from Myanmar. If today Thai people use English Alphabet for Sak Yant. It also does not mean that Sak Yant is orignally from England.

    • @mathewkirk1748

I'm a New Zealander who lived and worked as a Muay Thai fighter for 6 years for a major stable in the North that was situated at a Buddhist temple. During this time I sat for over 50 hours receiving Sak Yant from my master and my entire body above the waste is covered in Sak Yant. I had a lot of time to befriend the Master and I believe I can give a generally accurate opinion....
Firstly, if a Western tourist wants to get a Yant as a memento of a vacation or for whatever reason, this isn't considered so bad. Typically it is limited to something small like the Ha Thaeo or perhaps an animal that the person identifies with, but monks and most Thais believe this is OK as it promotes the art and the principles of the Buddhist faith in general, without overdoing and without appearing too "precious" about it.
Where it gets a little more serious is when you want start to get the bigger/multiple pieces. However, these requests are regulated somewhat by Sak Yant Masters who are not just going to dish out a bunch of Yants to somebody they have recently met. They typically size you up and decide what is appropriate. In my case, as my fight record and ring success and personal attributes increased - so did the Yants that were tattooed onto me. Had I have wanted them all immediately then I'd have be declined and probably would come across as rather disrespectful.
Considering this, any Thai who sees a foreigner wearing a substantial collection of Yant, will usually assume that they are either someone who has been assessed by a Master, and understands the weight and responsibility of the Yants they carry, or that they are a Muay Thai fighter who definitely takes it seriously. Typically then, this is seen in a positive light.
What will offend Thais (to be specific to the race in your question) greatly is when they see Westerners wearing Yants and behaving in a manor unbecoming of the Yants that they wear. Yes, you are always going to have idiots who let the team down and cause offense - but that's life in any facet. I believe that for every idiot there are 50 who wear them with respect and I think that's a pretty decent return all things considered.
Further to this, it is important to remember that Buddhism and any of the associated practices such as Sak Yant, do not necessarily belong exclusively to the Thais, or any race for that matter. Buddhism is for everybody who wants to embrace and respect it, irrespective of nationality. In the case of Sak Yant - if a Master is OK with giving a Yant to a non-Thai in the name of spreading the word and involving people form all around the world in the tradition, then that is the benchmark to go by and therefore is not for anyone else to judge. Ultimately, it comes down to personal responsibility to do right by your decision to receive a Yant. Karma will slap you upside the head hard if you do it wrong - but it will be a lifelong blessing if you do it right.

Robert Williamson yes your partially correct.. just to keep short.. most of our khmer kruu taught siam what they mostly know.. it varies on the kruu on which path they learn and take in Cambodia..ancient scroll and writing have been written and past down from centuries...but as khmer kingdom lost millions of people during khmer rouge.. most of the world took Thai words because of the cheap economy and side with the americans...thats why others think and say whatever Siam would teach not knowing the truth...
