I'm just gonna say it: this is my favorite adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk. I didn't see it in my childhood, so I have no nostalgic attachment to it and I still think it's the best adaptation of the story I've ever seen.
Oh God, memories! This is one trippy film! There is a sinister darkness to this one- Madam Hecuba will always remain one of the greatest movie villains to me, despite the fact most people don't know of her! Still can't work out what's going on with her and those cogs.
I know I wasn't born when this came out but my mum was and she had it on VHS and kept it all the way up to 2008 and that's how I remember this movie. I use to love it.
Absolutely FANTASTIC!! I used to watch this every time it was on TV when I was a kid! I never could find it on VHS or DVD. I just looked it up on KODI and the title came up but no channels had it. So I decided to search UA-cam and found your video! Thank you very much for posting this!
I spent YEARS looking for this, until I finally found it on dvd. Trouble is, I lost it in a flood, and now the dvd I originally had cost over $1,000 if I want to buy it again!! SOOOOO glad for this upload!!
OMG!!! I grew up watching this as a child. Never thought I'd ever see this again. Such wonderful yet scary nostalgia. Thank you so much for the upload. =D
I cannot believe I found this! I have been hunting for this animation for 15 maybe even 20 years . I last saw this as a child when I was 6 or 7 so you can imagine my memory was a bit fuzzy. I just had the vague recollection of a girl with hair that comes to a point on her head floating on clouds and the witch that was controlling her. I also knew it was Japanese but I completely forgot that this was Jack and The Beanstalk story! I am just so giddy with happiness right now. I have to find this on DVD!
I'm another one who remembers watching this on HBO all the time in the early 1980's. I always had sketchy recollections of bits and pieces of the film, but this really took me back. Thanks so much for the upload.
I am so happy the NC introduced this wonderfully trippy and awesome version of Jack and the Beanstalk to so many people who had no idea this thing even existed. I saw this movie when I was in Kindergarten and it left an imprint on my memory ever since. You don't forget something as gloriously insane as this, trust me. XD.
I stumbled upon this video whilst looking for the "Jack the Giant Slayer movie", the one that came out last year. And I must say, while watching both, the adaptation seems to water itself down in comparison to this one. I know most people might be tired of hearing us saying "we can appreciate antique art as much as we can appreciate our own", but I just have to say- this has got to be one of the most straightforward and eerie animated films I've ever seen. Kudos to the person who uploaded this and to all the people who gave information about it in the comments. :D
Cool, see this cartoon influenced a lot of people, my mum had a bootleg vhs shop when I was little and this was one of the tapes she brought home, seen it so many times that most of the songs were ingrained in my mind. Thanks for the upload was rly fun to watch it again
This film was first released in Japan in 1974, but it was released in the US two years later in February 1976. The film you see here is the Columbia version from 1976 with an English dub. I remember seeing this as a kid when my parents used to have this VHS tape which was dubbed from a VCR since my uncle used to record them back in the 1980's along with the "Scooby & Scrappy-Doo" episodes on VHS and others. I lost the tape so many years ago, but it's great to see it once again.
OMG! Thank you for uploading this movie. I've watched it since I was in kindergarten. Although, I almost 30, it such a great time watching it agaian and agian. Haha
I'm 33. In the early 80's, my mother rented this for me from the library. It was on either VHS or beta. It scared me as a child. Just so surreal. Those paper wedding guests-especially the priest-really scared me, even more than the witch and the giant. Don't know what made me look this up, but I actually watched the whole thing. What a trip.
32 here and i saw this on Disney when i was 4 and was one of the first animes i saw with Warriors of the Wind (the butchered Nausicaa), transformers the movie (in theaters), Voltron, Grimm's fairy tales, Unico 1 & 2 etc. It wasn't until i saw the harder anime on video at age 12 with Vampire Hunter D
Oh yeah. To this day my sisters torture me with lines from this movie. Crazy scary witch who wants to literally eat Jack?! Holy Crap! She's terrifying.
+MrGeek1979 It was the witch that scared me most, as Tulip was just a pawn in her game, and she probably sprayed some sort of mind-control drug in his face to make him do all the things that he did.
The bit where Jack looks at the painting of Tulip then back at Margaret XD - gets me everytime lol. I still love watching this film of Jack & the Beanstalk and the dark sinister tone of the characters/music works so well.
This was my fav movie when i was a child! And i´m so glad to enjoy it again! It´s a real masterpiece. The best version of this fairytale. thank you for uploading!
I saw this film in Russia when I was a very young child. I didn't think a whole lot of it back then although I dug it, but it certainly planted a strong seed in me. I remember later once I moved to the states, I found a copy of Dark Side Of The Moon in my house. The moment Breathe started, I had a vision of castles in the clouds and swore that I had heard the music before. Now that I've found this I see that it's not the same, but I think this film played a big part in my love for psychedelic and progressive music.
Wow!! This took me back in time. My sister, brother and I would like watching this cartoon when we were kids and it sure brought back some wonderful memories. Did not know that it was made in 1974. We saw it in the mid 80's.
im 41 and remember watching this on showtime,i was about 8-9 when i first saw jack and the beanstalk and i watched it everytime i could such a good cartoon as good as disney i say!!!
deadstar thrushway I'm from Austria and I watched the German version which was a lot more different than the English version a sample all the animals speak from the beginning of the movie right on and nobody explained why
im .. cryin i used to watch this at my grandma's house when i was like 7/8??? (in the 2000's) bc i got it on Video from a charity shop and like .... i couldnt remember its name or what exactly happens so i could never look it up but i remembered one night and searched for about an hour and i cant even explain how happy i am i FINALLY found it... rewatching it now im blown away about how vividly i seem to remember it im so happy i am i found it i cant express it fully ❤️️❤️️ it doesnt seem real
+How to make Bosnia Last time I watced this and the ITV pantomime, was about 2000 (this) and 2012 (ITV pantomime). ITV pantomime featured Julian Clary as Tim (although he was Buttons when I saw him in Cinderella).
This is a japanese film dubbed in english. The DVD plays both. I was 9 years old when I first saw this on Cinema+ in Florida. Best Jack and the Beanstalk ever. The wedding scene was the creepiest. (Are you happy !!)

Pretty obvious isn't it? She's an automaton or robot.
I know I wasn't born when this came out but my mum was and she had it on VHS and kept it all the way up to 2008 and that's how I remember this movie. I use to love it.

This feels like a Disney film from the 1950's on acid.

It is.

I have not seen this in almost 20 years, thank you!
I'm another one who remembers watching this on HBO all the time in the early 1980's. I always had sketchy recollections of bits and pieces of the film, but this really took me back. Thanks so much for the upload.
it freaked me out! it was weird! remember? i was young and what brought me here looking for it was trying to remember what was so ....off about it?
I am so happy the NC introduced this wonderfully trippy and awesome version of Jack and the Beanstalk to so many people who had no idea this thing even existed.
I saw this movie when I was in Kindergarten and it left an imprint on my memory ever since. You don't forget something as gloriously insane as this, trust me. XD.
Thanks for posting this. I always loved this movie, but especially the music. I wish there was a soundtrack to it.

Cannot believe I finally found this always used to watch it when I was younger!!!
That was the weirdest movie I think I've ever seen. The 80s were such a strange time!
It was so great to find this here! I have watched it at least 100 times when I was little.
OMG! Thank you for uploading this movie. I've watched it since I was in kindergarten. Although, I almost 30, it such a great time watching it agaian and agian. Haha
OMG! Thanks for this upload! I haven't seen this movie since I was a little girl. One of my old time favorites!
I love this movie!!!! reminds me of when I was a kid!!!
Thanks NC for pointing me to this movie. It's quite the ride!
My childhood right there...its so beautiful. everything, the castle, so spooky and mysterious...the mise en scene...everything is perfect...
wow. this just brought my childhood back for 90 minutes. i remember every detail.
This is the kind of movie you watch when you're 4 or 5, only to ask yourself 10 years later: Did this movie exist?

Wow..this cartoon spell-bounded me as child and for years growing up.
So psychedelic!
Madame Hecuba is one the scariest villains I´ve ever seen. She scared me as a child, and she still gives me the creeps...
"There is no humans in the castle!!!!!"...meaning the boy's presence. But ent the girl a human and she was there before
I've been looking for it forever too! Wow! I can't believe how creeeeepy it is!
This was my fav movie when i was a child! And i´m so glad to enjoy it again! It´s a real masterpiece. The best version of this fairytale. thank you for uploading!
I feel SO OLD now, remembering this cartoon.

The only scary scene I scared of when Jack spotted Princess Margret just stood there and stares at him.
Thank you for that trip down memory lane!

I watched this so much as a kid, around the same time you did. So incredible to see it again. It holds up very well!

The "fight" against Tulip really brung in some Western slapstick.
The song in 1:05:14 makes me feel like I've taken a load of drugs!! What a crazy vocal I can't stop laughing!! Are you Happyyyyy!!
Jesus. The soundtrack is beautiful. Sure, the movie has its flaws but damn. Thank you, NC.
And, of course, as an expert in cinema you would be aware of those flaws. I want to thank you so much for pointing out those fl... Oh wait; you didn't point out any flaws, did you.
To this day I wonder how the hell my parents got their hands on VHS tape of a friggin' English dub of a Japanese-made animated interpretation of the story of Jack and the Beanstock from the 1970s.
Best Jack and the Beanstalk story period.
I watched this movie back in kindergarten back in 1980. Our whole class watched in the school library, through movie projector instead of VHS.
i was looking for this !!!! thanks a lot
Jack and the Beanstalk is definitely a classic animated movie adaptation of a classic book.
Thanks so much, been waiting for this.

nice movie I have some collections of the same type of DVDs but I haven't seen this one before so yea nice movie!
12:05 that is the creepiest laugh i've ever heard in my entire life!
It's Himnazul's laugh
This must've been a big budget film. It has impressive animation for 1974, I could see it rival Disney without much issues.
Now that is a hella creepy villain... That horrific face and witchy voice are sure to send me some nightmares tonight.
This brings back so many memories!
i was introduced to this a few years ago and saw it as a junk knockoff film. i ended up loving it and only now know that it was the original. i can see why i was drawn back to looking for it
Anyone got more recommendations for 60s-70s anime like this? I really like this kind of weird storytelling and animation these anime have.
The US version here has some really REALLY good music for 1974, such as at 17:05. The storyline is complex as well. Very cool.
Thank you !
Jack your my hero
my god you rock thank you so much i remeber this as a kid
it'sss beautiful i like it very much :X:X
my memories :D
"Music is a kind of miracle itself".
thank you!!!! I love this one! my fave since i was little! couldnt find it anywhre..
