Reekay's LifeBeyondTheSea - On behalf of my Filipino people. I apologize that you received that kind of irrational response from other Filipinos. Unfortunately there are Filipino that are still ignorant and not very educated.
I am in 100% agreement about the Pho. It has been my favorite for the past 20 or so years, every since I went to my first Vietnamese restaurant in Santa Rosa Ca. It's actually my "if you were trapped on a desert island" wish food hehehe. With regard to the other thing, about the people that got offended; truth is, people like that will not listen to reason no matter what you say (I get the same feedback here in Mexico from the locals). The only way to really get through to them is if they get the chance to actually live in an area where those kind of things are being done (trash picked up, nice public parks and streets etc..) so that they can see first hand just how messed up it actually is where they live by comparison. Some of my educated Mexican friends here are appalled by the lack of public services, and overall littering done here in Mexico, but those people have seen other places, like the USA, as examples of what it could look like if the cities and states would make an effort. Another great video, and thanks for the info.
This is my first comment after following you for about five years. I've really enjoyed your videos and the info you present. Thanks for helping to enlighten us all.
Yeah, it is good to stick on the facts, and describe in respective/constructive way and not biase when talking about 2 things/ compare two countries. After foods, dont forget to try hot tea so you ll get slimmer ( in future), that is what VN ppl do. Hope you ll enjoy learnning about this country gradually!
Reekay for mayor. You can run my city any day! Very good comments on public responsibilities. It's easy to gripe and complain, but to come up with solutions, better ways, and options takes a lot more effort. Which I'm afraid many do not want to do. What you stated about contacting your local leaders, mayors, politicians is a good recommendation for any community, get involved! Very informative video, thank you! Dave H.
Frank Converse... who are you addressing? (that would help) i don't see how it could be me. i'm 56. to me, a 60-year old woman is older. (you can double-check the math on that if you don't believe me.) and the average age in vietnam is in the mid-20's. so, naturally, most of the people i interact with are in that age group. although i did speak with 2 landlords in their early 50's. in summation, as i stated i'm 56. i have no problem with that. if your comment was aimed at someone else, you really should identify who it is you're addressing.
Spot on again. Your videos have helped tremendously. The biggest challenge so far has been shopping. There isn't exactly a Walmart around the corner. In the Philippines we had Robinsons, SM, Gaisanao, etc., but here finding a mass merchant has been a little difficult. As in time, I'm sure I'll figure it out. The bus app and Grab make it so much easier to get around. I kind of like not having so many fast food options. The local eateries are awesome. Like you, I'm liking it here. Cam on ban.
I'm not necessarily looking for American brands, but I am looking for household goods, hardware and food that I can basically buy in one trip or store. I see thousands of little stores and only a few larger food stores. Most of the malls seem to have higher-end clothing and merchandise stores in them. The best I found so far was the Co-op Store. I do like the challenge of the search though.
I will always thank you for your valuable information in each video. I understand that each organism and its diet is particular but in general rice is a great food. Benefits of rice consumption It contributes great amount of energy to the diet for being a complex carbohydrate It does not contain gluten, being suitable for coeliacs and people who want to reduce gluten intake. It is easy to digest, so it is an ideal food for people with delicate stomach Prevents constipation, due to its fiber content (only brown rice) It helps protect against diseases such as cancer due to its antioxidant and fiber content. It is a food suitable for people with hypertension due to its very low sodium content. It has a high nutritional value White rice fights episodes of diarrhea due to its astringent action. Information taken from medical reports. Undoubtedly the variety of food dishes in Thailand and Vietnam shades those of the Philippines. .
the benefits you listed are present in whole-rice, with the husk. brown rice and red rice can be part of a healthy diet. but in the PH, filipinos do not want anything to do with whole-rice. they only want White Rice, which has been shelled of the husk and benefits. more can be viewed about this big difference between whole and white rice by a physician here... ua-cam.com/video/EQY2F1HVIBg/v-deo.html
i've cut my rice intake down from 3 times a week to having pho (which has broth, veggies and garlic) maybe twice a week. definitely a healthier move. can't compare pure, white rice with rice noodles as part of a bowl of pho. healthyeating.sfgate.com/health-benefits-rice-noodles-5639.html
Do you have any problems using electronic devices from the U.S. in the Philippines seeing as U.S. devices are usually 120 volts and the Philippines use I think 240 volts?
There are also some dedicated trnaslating devices....that one can buy....almost looks like the old star trek gizmos.....some highly rated on Amazon....
You can smoking outdoor coffee shops or vendors, you are not allowed to smoke in gas stations, hospital, schools, in buildings, shopping malls, restaurants . However ,there are some spot smoking zones in these place.... And you should not smoke front of Vnese women., cause they do not like ,atleast not into who smokes surrounding them@.@.
I have Blue Cross Blue Shield with my pension package and you wont get a hospital to accept it. It would half to be a reimmbursement after you paid the bill in full. As far.as travelers insurance or from another country it would fall under the reimmbursement process also. The only think that works here is a prepay policy with a company in the Philippines. I've had one with Pacific Cross four years but their a killer on preexisting conditions.
Have you thought about going to school to learn? If you have, how much do they charge for lessons? Do they have tour guides and how much do they charge for half and whole days?
Reekay, are you retired and how do you receive your funds?from my research I've discovered that there are restrictions to accessing funds from atm machines. I'm not allowed to have an account in the Philippines.
Even with older ones it would depend on where in Nam u are at. In the south we were the good guys. U r correct which is better depends on U. What state/city in the US is the best??? It depends on what U want. One thing most people don't ever think about is where does the money for better infrastructure come from? It doesn't rain from the heavens. It comes from taxes which no one likes paying, including me.
Great info Reekay. I am curious about the big river that borders your district there in Saigon. Is it clean or is it a sewage canal like the Pasig river in Manila?
2 questions I do have is 1) Is District 7 far enough away from the Tourist areas and 2) How difficult would it be to get a visa extension after 1 year of living in Vietnam?
Good video. It does look a nice clean safe place to visit Vietnam nice food it's true fillipinas throw trash everywhere it's a beautiful country the Philippines iv visit it many times over the years but thay do have to clean the place up .
I am rusty in German and have started using DuoLingo online--free on the computer and on the phone. It's brought me back up to speed with German. They have Vietnamese as well. Maybe check it out. I just do the lessons everyday, maybe ten minute sessions. They have tons of languages...and even Klingon. I really enjoy your videos!
Good morning thank you for your videos I want to ask you something if I want to live in the philhpins for long time what I have to do I came from Israel
Reekay I had a question on visas Is it easier and more clear cut in Vietnam than PH? My big problem is the exit visa here (if you stay in PH more than 6 months you need to be cleared of any legal problems before you can leave) ? it takes a week or 2 to get or maybe more? And I have know idea what problems they would be looking for and have never seen anything like a computer system here to look for that? I think its just a way to get p500 and Im fine with that, would just like to pay it at the airport and not have to deal with 5 hours x 2 trips to the immigration office. If I have an emergency and have to head back to the US in a hurry that could be a problem. Just the unknown I would not even want to book a flight with out that in hand. My solution is to leave every 6 months to re start the clock. But even then I wouldn't know if thats good until Im getting on the plane. On the + the PH people here are genuinely nice and friendly to foreigners and really like Americans ( and running out of places were thats the case lol) BUT! there is a bit of a problem here with the trash, burning of plastic and just a general corruption/incompetence/unpredictability with government services. After a year it is getting a bit old. ESPECIALLY after it crossed my mind that the people that can't figure out something as simple as litter are the ones that are supposed to figure out what to do with the mothers with there babies and the stray kids begging for food at most intersections? Cant help but to go back to the age old saying "You always get the government you deserve". I can fix the problem for me just by leaving. The filipino people have a bit of work to do. BTW if all the expats leave that will solve the problem, there wont be any money to buy products packaged in plastic. :) Like the vids
every year i've gotten the ECC (exit clearance) from the PH without problem. these days it can take up to 4 days but in reality it's nothing more than the usual check they do when you renew your visa. i once needed it before monday and for an extra 1k pesos they had it ready for me in an hour.
Great vids Reekay ,if you get sick in District 7 probably best place for you to go is FV Hospital. It is the French Vietnamese Hospital owned by French doctors ,but best you have insurance. .There are many good private hospitals the Family Practice at diamond plaza and district two has foreign doctors as well as the most western style paramedic ambulance service .best you program in your phone *9999 if you have an emergency they speak English and it’s the closest here to 911. You can buy a yearly subscription to the Ambulance for $35 usd or pay full pop ,but if you had a heart attack money would be no object . The *9999 may or may not take you to their hospital as there are 100 hospitals in TPHCM they will know the best one to go to depending on your situation . There are many good private hospitals but sometimes if you are in serious condition the best hospital is Cho Ray Hospital in China town and that is a government hospital. Many foreigners go to Cho Ray they pay double what locals pay but it is still very cheap and have an escort that speaks English take them around and avoid all the line ups ,so good option if not insured . Also you should check out the new American International Hospital in District 2 just opened a few months back again would be a place you would want to have insurance for anything major .
my first reason is the major reason.. the cold. i've lived my whole life in southwestern usa. i love the heat. dry heat, humid heat.. i love it. i doubt i'll even consider hanoi as a long-term place due to the cold winters they have. even though that is reason enough, i've met hundreds of european men and their assessments of european women as a whole is as bad if not worse than my own observations of american women. i want nothing to do with that whole toxic, feminist subculture mentality. so, i'll stay where both the weather and the women are warm.
When I first arrived in Japan after living in a western country it was amazing. I wanted to experience a country that is in complete contrast to what I know. Western countries do have a lot of similarities. Asian countries are in complete contrast.
are you kidding? that's why they want to live in 3rd world countries so they can strech their dollars there. you can't do that in Europe. Even in poor countries in Europe, you can't rent an apartment for 1/4 the cost in the asian countries. Furthermore, only england and ireland speak english. Every other country in Europe speak a different language. Many things are more expensive in Europe than in the USA.
@@pelangable i been to Europe(all of it) and Southeast Asia, and im from the USA... The difference is in a can of COKE, hahah,, Europe 3 USD, USA 1or 2 , Asia 25 to 50 cent or cheaper, hahaha,,,, Europe with all its history is like the USA,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Asia is not and thats the magnet of attraction besides the economics,,,,which is a reality....... but some places are catching to the USA disease and its spreading,,,,,,,,,,,, Peace ,,,,,,,
From what I've been told people steal the trash cans in the Philippines for their personal use. That's why they don't bother to put any bins out. But there are sweepers who go around sweeping up garbage and placing it into a pushcart. There was a documentary where an sanitation Irishman went to Manila and worked with a local sanitation worker cleaning the gutters and picking up trash. The man is only paid 3K pesos or about $60 a month to do that job. When the Irishman got home he got a collection of money that was sent to the Filipino sanitation worker in Manila.
i'm taking a break from teaching this year, so i can focus on my own experience in VN and other things i'm working on. it's possible i'll teach again next year, but for now it's not my priority. several of my close friends do teach from both PH and VN, online.
there is 'hoisin sauce' and 'plum sauce'. the difference is that hoisin has a spicy taste to it, plum sauce is a bit sweeter. but both made from plums. i like both and will put either in my pho. :)
The Philippines is behind other southeast Asian countries as far as Infrastructure, pollution, extremely poor internet, expensive electricity, and corruption, coupled with increasing high food costs. Not to mention the overwhelming and ever multiplying numbers of beggars and scammers, It has become very difficult to enjoy yourself there without a multitude of locals interrupting your every goings and comings with trying to sell/scam you or beg you to death. Also, the food is absolutely lacking in favor and in proper preparation, i.e. serving cold or just a little warm food....never understood that concept. The rest of southeast Asia is catching up in the 'Spoken English' department as it is now a mandated course in all schools. Will I still visit the Philippines???? It's down to one visit a year now for the reasons I mentioned above. But as more of my friends relocate to other southeast Asian countries, my visits to the Philippines will most likely trickle down to once every few years.
Totally agreed and i been to phils a couple of times and been hounded for viagra, sunglasses, hats, prostitution, etc.... food options are lead to Shakeys, Jolibee, Maxs, etc.... Very sad,......... phils is a beautiful country with countless problems more than you stated,,,,, Peace !!
First off I don't care what kind of insurance you have unless it will take you out of the Philippines, it will not get you good health care in the Philippines

Also you should check out the new American International Hospital in District 2 just opened a few months back again would be a place you would want to have insurance for anything major .
thanks for the really good info. i found this article as well on the current status of medical care in VN... bit.ly/healthcare-in-vietnam
Have you shopped at a co op? Some of the Saigon supermarkets are crazy.
yes, i've been to the one in the mall at D7. a bit of everything, very convenient.
I've been to several Co-op's. Good store, some bigger than others. VinCenter is good too
Just asking because I am curious. Why would you not live in Europe?
my first reason is the major reason.. the cold. i've lived my whole life in southwestern usa. i love the heat. dry heat, humid heat.. i love it. i doubt i'll even consider hanoi as a long-term place due to the cold winters they have. even though that is reason enough, i've met hundreds of european men and their assessments of european women as a whole is as bad if not worse than my own observations of american women. i want nothing to do with that whole toxic, feminist subculture mentality. so, i'll stay where both the weather and the women are warm.
The difference is in a can of COKE, hahah,, Europe 3 USD, USA 1or 2 , Asia 25 to 50 cent or cheaper, hahaha,,,, Europe with all its history is like the USA,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Asia is not and thats the magnet of attraction besides the economics,,,,which is a reality....... but some places are catching to the USA disease and its spreading,,,,,,,,,,,, Peace ,,,,,,,
the VA has medial care in manilla if your a vet you may be able get free health care at the VA
I do believe that only Vets with service connected medical issues can use it. I think that is the case.

Are you considering teaching English in a class or continue teaching online?
i'm taking a break from teaching this year, so i can focus on my own experience in VN and other things i'm working on. it's possible i'll teach again next year, but for now it's not my priority. several of my close friends do teach from both PH and VN, online.
Reekay's LifeBeyondTheSea can you suggest any websites where you can teach online please
I love those sandwiches too, mmmmmm...
What is plum sauce ? I have never heard of it
there is 'hoisin sauce' and 'plum sauce'. the difference is that hoisin has a spicy taste to it, plum sauce is a bit sweeter. but both made from plums. i like both and will put either in my pho. :)
Thanks for the reply
It's funny how you mentioned that because the Build Build Build program is in progress. The Green City will be a game changer.
Good video ! Is there beggars there ??
there are 'some', depending on which part of the city you're in. but from what i've seen so far, it's about 5% of what i saw in the PH.
First off I don't care what kind of insurance you have unless it will take you out of the Philippines, it will not get you good health care in the Philippines
maybe for now, avoid Philippines in the title of your video and even including it and just focus on Vietnam. Vietnam deserves it.

LOL.. what can we ask our politicians regarding our internet? Come on, man. That's quite pretty lame question. Come on, you can do better than that. Seriously?
