Rocha was founded in 1793 and had acquired the status of "Villa" (town) before the Independence of Uruguay. On 7 July 1880 it was made capital of the Department of Rocha, while its status was elevated to "Ciudad" (city) on 10 January 1894.
La Paloma is a seaside town on Uruguay’s southeast coast, east of Montevideo. Its slim, white Lighthouse of Cabo Santa Maria overlooks the Atlantic, near traditional fishermen’s cottages. Nearby, Bahía Chica and Bahía Grande are sandy bays with calm waters. The Centro Cultural La Paloma hosts cultural events. West are Los Botes beach, with strong surf, and Laguna de Rocha, a wetland reserve with migratory birds. ―
