  • In 122 SOTA activations I don't recall ever activating a summit on 2m SSB. It's time to change that!
In this video I take a suitably large beam with a mast & Icom 705 up a hill to have some SOTA fun during the RSGB "Backpackers contest".
Part of this activation was live-streamed. The replay of the livestream is also available on my channel should you wish to see what we got up to:- ua-cam.com/users/live03wDh2s7q0Q?...
If you want to help support the channel you can now "buy me a coffee" using the link below:-

All funds raised will be put back into the channel (upgrading camera/audio equipment, travel costs to film content etc)

A brilliant way to show the trials and tribulations of contesting when /p. Well done James.

Thanks Callum. It made a nice change from the norm as I don't get to play on 2m SSB very often.

Good effort James and well done carrying that yagi and mast up a Summit. Decent weather for you too. 73 Chris M0RSF

Cheers Chris. It did get quite warm up there. I ended up with mild sunburn and suffered for a couple of days afterwards!

Nice location that one! Interesting to see how rotating the beam nulls out stuff

Yep! It's a fairly large beam, so the peaks can be quite sharp.

Lovely video this one James.. real nice selection of shots and transitions.. I personally enjoy hearing about the climbing route too and it can help those who come after you..
On the radio piece, fair play for trying something different.. and for carrying all that up the hill!!
its a long drive to try something that might not have even worked!

Thanks Dave. I'm very conscious of the fact that I've got a lot of very similar SOTA activation videos on my channel, so wanted to do something slightly different.
I also took a pretty big chance by live-streaming this, which had plenty of potential to end in calamity!

Well done. I guess 8pm first Tues of each month is the best time to activate SOTAs on 2m SBB... definitely a summer month mode and band then lol. Love your 'armstrong' antenna rotator :D Being Ciren based I've worked Tony G4L(DL) many times in 2m/70cm contests, he puts a cracking signal out from that portable location.

The "armstrong antenna rotator" was a nice idea driven by the desire to keep things as simple (and light) as possible, but it really needs a method of locking it in place so it doesn't turn in the wind.
Good job I didn't go up Liddington Castle (as per my original plan)....I'm guessing that Tony wouldn't have been very happy if I tried to nick his contest operating spot!

big old beam that James, I have a lightweight 5 element job which bolts to a fibreglass pole just fine (not full height of course), but no doubt much less gain than yours.

I guess you make use of what you have available. I think the smaller beam would probably have been more practical for this exercise.
A big beam like mine is probably better suited to field days where you have a mast and a rotator, or vehicle mounted masts (which is how I used to operate with it).
Nonetheless, it was an interesting experiment and a good day out. It made a really nice change to the norm.

That beam is a bit of a beast to be fair. Can you try it again unannounced on a Sunday? When the most SOTA activity takes place to see the results. With a more portable beam obviously 😆

    • @AmateurRadioUK
      @AmateurRadioUK  Рік тому

To be fair, this was filmed on a Sunday. Despite posting on the SOTA reflector & spotting myself, when I uploaded the log to the SOTA database I noticed that only one contact had logged a chase.
In other words doing this without the help of a contest would probably mean a failed activation, certainly in my area. Further north in the Lake District or Pennines (where there is much more 2m activity) might be a different story.

Where did you get the Aluminium mast from if you could link to where you got it from that would be great as I’m looking for a mast

I bought it from Martin Lynch a number of years ago. I don't know if they still sell them but I seem to recall that it wasn't cheap!
