Hey, I'm 5 years into mandarin myself :) Thank you for the wise reassurance. Your point about doing what you enjoy is essential. If you keep finding the language fun, you keep doing it. I haven't had any formal teacher and just by having fun have gone from 0 Chinese to middle of HSK 5 material now. I primarily learn by listening, pausing the screen, and copying all of the characters into notebooks. Then I read aloud what I've copied and see if Chinese friends can understand what I'm saying. It is a slow process, but it does work and I find it fun, so I don't feel like I've troubled myself at all. Quite the opposite. I look forward to my daily routine with Chinese. 加油!

Youve made some great progress, congrats! Having fun is the most important part, or else everything just feels like work and you get demotivated. 加油!

You talk a lot of sense, and have validated some of the feelings that I had about learning my language yet, were told otherwise by super intellect and polyglots. Personally, I can only react positively to small achievable goals. Thank you for your input.

Glad it resonates with you. Out of curiosity what did the other polyglots say?

Lazynes is a myth. If you want to learn almost everyting you have to do what our brain don't like - effort.
