Good call. He is looking like the best player in the draft class as of 30 games in. Donovan Mitchell is looking great also. I think Tatum would have much better numbers with a little less efficiency of he was on a bad team, but he is doing exactly what Boston needs from a 3rd/4th option. If he was a 1st/2nd option he would score more and have more than just a couple assists a game, but also have lower efficiency. I look forward to watching his progress over the next decade (or 2?).

Yes, among casual fans. He was DraftExpress' #1 prospect coming out of high school, not Markelle Fultz, Josh Jackson, or Harry Giles. 6'8", 205 lbs. with a 6'11" wingspan and he is a year younger than Jackson. He is a good overall player, albeit inconsistent, that will only get better (and more consistent) going forward.

OMG these guys are 19 year olds!!! Everyone had flaws, no one is a finished product. People want these dudes to come in and be Lebron, when he's once in a generation. Tatum's bed and butter should be the mid range. He's got a great shot from that spot and seems comfortable. He needs to build his game around that, like Curry did around his 3 pt shooting. Curry wasn't a great finisher at he rim, wasn't a great athlete and has never been a gifted passer (good and willing, not gifted). But he worked his butt off to get better. No reason why Tatum can't do the same.

I'm honestly not impressed. No way he's going to score on NBA defenses, he just takes too long to attack and isn't a consistent shooter. He is best at post ups, and there's just no way he's gonna be able to do that in the NBA, no coach is gonna revamp their offense so a rookie ball stopper can post up. He'd better start working on his defense now because that will probably be what gets him the most minutes now that Crowder is gone.
He has all kinds of potential, but I don't know that he will live up to it. If he averages 5ppg his first couple years i'll be legit shocked.

Coach Nick was right again, he is better than Mitchell right now - better D and more clever shot selection, better post/ fake moves. Mitchell can get there but is not there yet

the Knicks are fools for not drafting Dennis Smith Jr, he's gonna be a beast

  • @robsondominator

If the Kings Draft Fox than they will have one of the best backcourts in the NBA in a few years. Fox + Hield remind me of Wall + Beal, not comparable now but give it a few years... Now get some good wing player with pick number 10 and all of a sudden that Cousins trade doesnt seem that bad. However I am confident the Kings will screw this up somehow...

Great analysis. A lot of his problems come from youth and lack of strength. Another reason 1 and done needs to be 2 and Through.

You said something about how shooting across his body will be a good skill for him in the NBA but in the De'Arron Fox video you said this would be a weakness for him. Just wondering why this is different for Tatum?

Dude has a perfect NBA body to add bulk. Those shoulders remind me of Howard's. By the time he's 21 he could be a tank.

+A Khan today's players don't train for huge shoulders, it affects shooting. See: Griffin, Blake

He will be terrific as a power foward; he'll flourish at that poistiion. However, if teams make him as a small foward. He needs to work his handle; as well as able to change speeds in game. When penetrating he just drives one speed instead of changing pace. His defense is very bad; he won't do well since his flat foot. As well as losing his man during switches. His a streaky shooter; and he can't create for himself consistently. If he goes to Boston; i can see Stevens moving him at the four. Which should help him in offensively; but really his kinda of a project. But his not the most underrated prospect in the NBA; that goes to Dennis smith or Frank. I lean on Frank; he can be the 6'6 giannis of pgs.

How about the warriors vs Celtics for the championship... Steven curry looking at Jayson Tatum like Linda Hamilton looked at the T-1000. “What the f- is it, what the f- is going on” and Jason looking back like “I’ve arrived, Boston is just too strong this time”.

I'm done making assumptions of NBA rookies for a long time. How many times we've seen hundreds of them fail to make impact ??? We expect way too much of them, only a few of them will be stars in the NBA

he is the most underrated flat out. 6'8 scorers with 7ft wingspans don't come around often. Boston needs size, scoring and shooting. Hayward, the cities savior might not even come here. so why not draft what you need? mentally redundant folks wanna draft another point guard.... it's really secret hate for Isaiah Thomas being short.

I thought this was a good analysis except for the stuff about his defense. To my eye, he was the best OAD defender Duke has had apart from Winslow. He seldom let his man get by him and he had good awareness on help.
