Boehner: Pope Francis visit helped “clear the picture” for his resignation

Speaker of the House John Boehner says he was humbled by the Pope’s request to pray for him. Pope Francis blessed Speaker Boehner’s grandson Allister and discussed children and education with the congressman.

I don’t blame John Boehner one bit for getting emotional about meeting Pope Francis. I met Pope Francis after a General Audience in 2017. He blessed me, hugged me, and asked me to pray for him. He was really pleading more than asking and that shook me up a bit. I still get choked up when I talk about it.

I am visually impaired and am slowly going blind. I was touring Germany for two weeks in September 2017, and flew down to Rome for the General Audience. I didn’t realize I was going to meet him until he walked down to our section after the Audience was over, and began greeting all of us one by one. My wife had asked me to hug him if I had the chance. I only had about a minute with him, but when you’re with him, his focus is on you completely.
