Coming from Europe, the idea that US schools have active shooter drills like we have fire drills is horrific. The idea that kids have to play act as though there is a mass murderer in the building...
Yup. Teacher here getting ready for one on Friday. It’s tough in the younger grades because you want them to take the drill seriously but you don’t really want to tell them why we have to be serious during this. You have to be vague and specific at the same time. It’s horrible. After one of these events happens all I can think about when I’m walking around in the open is where I would go if shooting happened. Where’s the closest safe spot, where are the kids, do I even have keys to that room? Too scary
We know, and we don't need a European to tell us that. Try for a second to imagine what it's like to be, like me, against private gun ownership in the USA and have these shootings happening all the time. My son was in school in Massachusetts, 2002-2015. Even in this state---with stricter gun laws---we feared gun violence in our son's schools. We live with this danger--you don't, so shut up.

We make sure the cops & firefighters get home safe for sure. Police & Fire depts receive massive funding, adequate staffing, excellent benefits, not to mention widespread respect in the communities they serve. Schools get much, much less.
All these attacks on guns only started happening when the Supreme Court rules on the NYPRA vs. BRUEN was decided. Then the Democratic party went full tyrannical to ban all guns.

I lived in Danbury Connecticut for 10 years. It was very close to the Sandy Hook slaughter of so many small children, teachers and even the MOTHER of the shooter! In 2010 I moved from Danbury and missed it terribly. On December 14 of 2012, I saw this unfolding before my eyes and thought of the many, many times I had driven past that delightful school. Now 20 children were cut down and 6 staff members will slaughtered like pigs in a pen. Adam Lanza had killed his own mother in her home in Newtown, CT. before he drove to the school! The tragedy at Columbine had happened in 1999 but no one would have thought this would become a "trend" in America. We must end this human tragedy and our only hope at this time is a return to the rule of law and to allow the fundamental decency of our citizenry to conquer and obliterate this threat to our children and all people. Republicans have had years to get sensible gun laws passed but it has not happened and I'[m afraid t never will. Our hope lies in sending Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to the White House in November.💙💙💙💙💙

I question your source of information. Just this past year Republicans tried hard to pass a bill to harden our schools. Democrats shot it down and spent days of making fun of Ted Cruz and his idea of one door to enter schools. They brought up all kinds of ignorant points like fire exits. Only their bade wouldn't understand the concept of doors that only open outward. It's like they've never been to a movie theater, or large stores that have alarmed fire exits. They said it would cost billions to harden the schools while approving billions fir Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

A child says "We're used to it" when asked, by his father, how he felt about shootings and lock-downs in schools. That reply sent shivers up my spine. We are speaking of unprovoked gun violence by those who always seem to have access to weapons. It would seem these tragedies have taught those who buy and own guns nothing. When school shootings fall into the category of "Business as Usual", we must act. Profits over People is untenable.
In Australia this is not a issue either. Guns are not a right, they are a tool to be used only as a last resort. Guns should be locked up at all times.Weapons of war should never be in the hands of the broader population.

We're allowed to own some weapons of war. We can buy tanks, fighter jets, and military helicopters. As well as M16's. The problem is the are unaffordable to most people. To buy a pre ban M16 will set you back $25,000. to $40,000. so again most people can't afford them.

Blame mental illness. Don’t raise state funding of mental health services. Blame guns. Relax laws making another incident more likely and easier to accomplish. Whatever the excuse is, it won’t bring back all the innocent lives taken away too soon. Lawmakers need to stop pretending to care. They need to actually start caring, hopefully before the cemeteries get filled up due to their negligence. Burying their heads in the sand won’t bring those kids back to life.
This is a choice! What do you love more your gun or your children? If you love your children, vote for senators and congressmen, that love humans more than company profits. It is all about priorities; PRO LIFE or PRO DOLLAR!
In 1970 in the Netherlands 600 children per year (age till 14) died in traffic accidents. We started an action groep "Save the Children". The last 50 years all our roads have been redesigned, separating space, lanes and traffic lights for cars, bikes and pedestrians. The rules have changed; speed limits of 20 mph for schools and residential areas. Cars are legally responsible for accidents with bikes and pedestrians. It took billions, but we reduced the number of dead children to around 20 per year.

The families of the two teachers who were killed need to sue the father- who had been informed the year prior about his son- for loss of future income.

How can a parent be allowed to have an AR-15 type firearm in a house when a prior incident involving an underage child with prior evidence of deadly threat has occurred? Prior deadly threats that this child voiced at school. This is a case of gross negligence by the parents and law enforcement. Why don’t we have laws that adequately protect our citizenry. The perpetrators, parents as well as the gun industry should be punished.
Safe storage, red flag, banning some guns, not enough. Only banning firearms will end mass shootings.

I will touch on one issue. The school had two resource officers in a school of almost 2000 students. One officers per 1000. If we go to a courthouse what is the ratio of officers per person? But yet when an incident happens all of sudden there is hundreds of officers available to respond. Then most of them just stand around for hours. What were these officers doing prior to the incident? It was not so important that it kept them from responding or returning to even though the incident was controlled. So how did the weapon get into the school? Would have helped if there were 10 school resource officers? If there were 10 officers at the school some of them could still have responded to other needs nearby if needed. It is obvious that all the leaders do not make protecting schools a priority. I will also re state that the reason to charge this child as an adult is to protect the actual adults with from being liable. When a child of 13-14 years old commits an act of this magnitude the adults are the ones who failed.
Add armed security to schools.

I disagree with banning guns outright, but i do agree that we need stronger gun regulation than we have now, red flag laws and having wait times to buy guns and such would help, safe storage laws too
my issue with banning guns is you then get into the same issue we had with drug crackdowns where people who buy guns will still buy them, but then it will be bought and sold illegally underground, where you cant regulate it's usage, so safe storage laws and red flag laws wouldnt help in that situation and school shootings would still occur (maybe even higher than before), and also in general i do agree that a person has the right to own an AR-15 if they have went through the proper steps to buy one and put it in safe storage when they arent using it.
But yeah, i agree with everything else here personally.
