  • R.I.P. Ron who died yesterday. Mike Porter kindly informed me this morning and I'm sharing the sad news with all of you. It's purely because of him that I progressed as I did, having watched a Video tape of him teaching in the Wye Valley many years ago. His books are legendary as is his no nonsense method.
    Many thanks Ron!

Thank you for this tribute and demo. I've been a keen follower of Steve Cronin's work and learned an awful lot. I came across this demo accidentally and I didn't know Ron Ranson had died. He was an inspiration to many. Looking forward to watching more of your work. Thank you again for the lovely painting.

I am so sorry to hear of the death of Ron Ranson. He was my first 'workshop' teacher and helped me lay the groundwork as a successful, self-taught, painter and teacher. No matter which way my learning pushed me, my Hake brush was always in the brush container. When illness and physical disabilities kept me away from painting for six years, once I started to heal again, I returned to painting with the Hake. In 2014 I turned out over 100 paintings and sold them to raise money for the poor and homeless in our community. Without the large Hake brush, I could not have done the job. The two workshops I took from Ron in 1997 and 1998 were educational, of course, but also great fun. He was a great man and his legacy has influenced thousands of people worldwide.

It's been years since I first watched this video Dave but I enjoyed watching it as much today as I did the first time around! You've always been very generous in your praise for Ron and how he inspired you, as indeed I am to my friends about you and how YOU inspired ME to take up painting about 8 years ago - thank you! Best wishes to you and Sandie.

Hello old friend, lovely to hear from you. Ron inspired many folks to have a go with the watercolours. You've produced some lovely work over the years Hugh, I look forward to your Christmas card. Sandie's watering the garden at the moment. Although I don't do many watercolours, I'm still very enthusiastic with the acrylics. I look forward to going into my loft room studio most days. Best wishes to to and your family. Happy painting, Dave.

Like the tribute, and I think old Ron pulled something special out of you for this one. He'll be much missed - I took to the hake some years ago, like many had trouble with it, but then realized or learned that the secret was not to use it when it was sopping wet - after that, it just worked for me. This demo made me want to get the brush out again and get busy on a bit of watercolour paper.

Very sad to see the news that Ron has recently passed away. I was fortunate enough to work with him in when he was in industry in South Wales . I was aware at the time that he painted and decades later when I took up the brush found out how famous he actually was. He certainly influenced me as do others who paint in the same style.

Thanks for sharing Dave. I only heard yesterday about his passing and my deepest sympathies are with his family and friends. Ron's books were a great influence on my own work and my teaching methods, so I have much to be grateful for, to fulfill my life long ambition of becoming an artist. Though I never met Ron I feel the loss as if he were family. RIP Ron Ranson

This news saddens me greatly, as I'd studied with Ron for four years (2000-2004). I regarded him as one of most important mentors. My heart goes out to Darlis and his family. Rest in peace, Ron. You were a true gentleman.

Thanks for the tribute to Ron Ranson. He was a great contributor to the arts. You are lucky to have personally known him. I admire your other acknowledgements of other like minded artists. Yes, just a bit more Sienna grasses in the lake edges and it would be in my back yard here in Canada about a week ago before the snow.

Good job, Dave. A wonderful tribute to the old master! I can't explain why, but something made me get out my old Ron Ranson books and have a look at the old videos this weekend. I was thinking of trying to reach Mr. Porter to enquire how Ron was doing, when I saw your announcement. Very sad news, for us anyway, but I am certain he enjoyed a good life, doing what he loved. He surely brought us joy. I am still there--same Cotman paints, same brushes, and I'm sticking with them. I don't have that type of tray but a large, rectangular white plastic low-sided box with a lid, although I use stretchy cling film on top. Anyway, I also hope you get to feeling better soon. You've had a rough week! Just take it easy. Good luck with the Christmas tree and the cat.

Great tribute to a great painter. He was also largely responsible to my success at painting in watercolour as well. He has left us all with a great method of expression. His instruction through his books, seminars, and dvds has helped so many of us doubters like myself become true artists and prove to ourselves we can do it. Gone but not forgotten. Thanks for the tribute Dave.

I have watched your tribute several times now. You and Steven turned me on to Ron about 8 months ago and I've since purchased about 8 of his books. Ron also added burnt sienna to his palette by the time Skies was written it seems. He has an unimaginably lasting legacy in all of us who wield the hake brush. I always enjoy your footage and commentary. He was a watercolour giant for sure and was already a living legend many years before his passing.
    Thanks, Dave.
