    Officially we were called The Republic of the Philippines. But The Philippines can be used as well.
    When I went to South Korea last week, I was given the chance to visit DMZ-Demilitarized Zone.
    It is the boundary barrier of North and South Korea.
    i have seen North Korea from afar and to be honest, I felt a bit sad. I know in my own country, we do have a lot of complaints about many things (traffic, poverty, corruptions to name a few). We are a poor country compared to some of the Asian countries around us. But knowing what kind of lives the people of North Korea has to endure daily, I am still grateful of what my country has to offer me.-Freedom.
    Yes we have freedom to choose, speak , education, religion and expression. We practice our right to vote, we value the right of everyone. We unite to fight for our freedom . I hope not just for North Korea but to other nations as well whose lives had been restraints that one day, freedom will greet them when they open their eyes every morning.

    Ukraine had an article "The" till 1991 because the country was one of republic of Soviet Union. After August 24 of 1991 it became an independent country and became known as just"Ukraine". I guess because of this. :)

    It's not about our opinion, it's about the rule that an independent state with the name containing no common nouns like republic, state, federation, emirate, kingdom, etc. takes no definite article. Therefore, the correct variant is Ukraine without any article.

    Hey Master Mark, over here we have thirteen states. Each state is leaded by a Chief Minister. Well, If I had the chance to go to North Korea, I would love to. Why not?
    I guess the people there are friendly apart from their stringent rules and regulations. As this country always remained isolated in the world and it's one of the most secretive country on earth. I really wanted to find out more about them.

    The difference between state and province lies in autonomy. States are far more independent and have their own parliaments and can establish their own laws and even conduct a foreign policy. I don't have to go to the North Korea because I remember communism in Poland and lack of everything in shops. I'll give you some example - a joke from '80 - how do you call a butcher shop? - Naked hooks :) Actually the only one commodity sold constantly was lard. Other things were supllied temporarily and one had to stay in the long long queue, for example 5 hours to buy a ham or a sausage and, furthermore, meat was restricted to, as I remember, 400 grams for one person for month. This was with everything - candy, alcohol etc :)

    • @MadEnglishTV
      @MadEnglishTV  6 років тому

      Wow! That's crazy! I really want to learn more about the history of Poland. When did they become free from communism?

      The end of communism has a funny story. Communists let the opposition to take part in ballot and things were changing slowly from restrictions to freedom and some day one of famous Polish actresses during a live interview announced cold turkey "the 4 of june 1989 the communism in Poland ends up". It was live, so it went :) This sentence become a symbol and starting date of the beginning of new political system in Poland :)

    Hi Mark! I am from Ukraine and I am so proud of you that you mentioned Ukraine in your lesson. Thank you. Prior to 2014 Ukraine was divided into 24 oblasts (regions) and one Autonomous Republic of Crimea. In March 2014 Crimea was occupied and annexed by Russia and April 2014 pro-Russian separatists occupied Donbass in eastern Ukraine, which has many Russian-speaking people. Today, Ukraine is a bit smaller than before. Would I go to North Korea if I had the chance? Of course, I would like to visit that country. I would not mind visiting all the countries of the world.

    The grammar book i'm reading right now says: normally THE is not used with names of places (English grammar in use by Raymond Murphy) BUT THE is used in names with REPUBLIC, KINGDOM, STATES etc. So I'm from Ukraine is right.
    I use and misuse the articles all the time. I'm looking into the grammar book and understand that there is no way I can learn all these rules!!!
    Russia is a federation (unfortunately on paper only). So everything is in Moscow. People say there is no life outside Moscow. They suck all the money from us, and there is nothing we can do... on the paper we've got republics, oblast' (something like states), etc. but all the goverment is federal, and the federals tell us who is going to be a governor and where and how...

    Republic and democracy are totaly different from each other.
    Republic is who manages you.
    Democracy is how you are governed, managed
    Republic describes the state, democracy related to people and the way of life.
    Russia, iran, ukraine and France are all republic.
    Managers in
    The first three were elected. All but france are tyrany or dictatorship, no democracy. The voters vote for whom manages them , but if those elected has right to decide how they live them, this is called authocracy, dictatorship.
    If they had democracy, people would decide how to live.
    The UK is not republic, is monorchy, has king or queen,but democracy.
    Emirate means the head of the various tribes.

      INNA PETROVA I think a couple of places we used to put "The" in front of we don't so much any more. Ukraine is one example. Lebanon is another. If you look at old newspapers or books it's frequently called the Lebanon. I don't know anyone who says that today.
      But we also added one in recent history. When Czechoslovakia split apart it was easy to call the second one Slovakia. But the first one was awkward. We can't call it Czecho because that's really only an adjective, so we call it The Czech Republic. I think some people might call it Czechia.
      I think some people used to call Argentina by the name The Argentine.

    • @innapetrova5109
      @innapetrova5109 6 років тому

      In old newspapers you might have seen the Soviet Republic of Ukraine. In this case “the” correlates to the word republic. Ukraine is no longer the Soviet republic.
