That is a big part of why she was eliminated. She got referred as Bey's back up dancer several times on the show. That ~jazz routine was underwhelming. (which is worse than being terrible). People were expecting it to be absolutely amazing (people with problems with her dance experience would have hated it either way) and it wasn't. She did everything asked of her, and she did it well. It just wasn't enough content.
I never understood why so many were pissed because Heather was a dancer, Simone dances during her gymnastics routine, or Nancy sorta danced during her routine but were all okay with the fact Normani kept continuing each week even though she dances in the 5h performances

This is my theory on what I think has been happening on DWTS lately. I think that ever since Max or Val had pleaded that he never won a trophy (and won), and how Derek used to win a lot of seasons, the executives have tried to make it "fair" and are now manipulating votes so certain pros have a chance to win. for example Season 27 Sharna had never won a season before that and she won, then Season 28 Alan and Hannah winning when clearly James Van Der Beek and Kel Mitchell were clearly wayy better dancers. idk its just a theory.
What about the Ryan Lochte thing? Or when a judge asked Simone Biles why she doesn't smile and her response being "Smiles don't win gold medals" or her getting kicked off?
So it's not okay when Julianne judges her brother, who is actually fair with her criticism and scoring btw. But it's okay when Maks is a judge and gives Val and his partner higher scores then what they deserve, that's acceptable?!?
90% of the time, it was actually Maks giving Val the lowest score of all 4 judges, while CA/Bruno were actually more favorable when it came to giving Val high scores. And in that episode, may I point out that the harshest criticism of Val's original partner, Tamar Braxton, actually came from Maks? Let's not forget also that in that switch up week, Val happened to be paired with eventual winner Bindi Irwin, who was already racking up high scores by that point of the competition, so is it really favoritism if Val got good scores when paired with one of the better dancers that season? If anyone had reason to complain about those switch up scores, it was Sharna, because her partner was the one getting reamed by Maks, no thanks to his temporary partner Witney phoning in the choreography that week.
Tomo18x i remember that was in the switch up week. Bindi was with val so Maks gave that 10 to bindi not Val. And Val's original partner was with another pro and I remember he criticized her a lot and didn't give her good scores which shows that he is not favoring his brother at all
maria sous That's right. And Bindi had already received a 10 the week before and for her dance with Val, all the judges except Maks gave her 9s. Maks also gave a 10 to Alexa PenaVega who was dancing with Derek that week. He did critique Tamar Braxton, Val's original partner, a bit but the other judges were way harsher towards her and really underscored her in comparison to the other contestants later in the show. They gave her 7s while Maks gave an 8.
Carolina Ureña that doesn't mean she wasn't allowed to be there. she wasn't trained in ballroom. There was people with dance experiences and people without dance experiences in the very first season. There have been numerous dancers on before her. So that's way her elimination was bs unfair. Most people didn't even give her a chance and just didn't vote for her cuz her dance background which was unfair to her. expecially when the show has had people like riker that actually had ballroom training and Alfonso that danced on Broadway and many others with just as much dance experiences as her. plus the show was kind of unfair to her too. They had her dance in the middle every week but her last week. the judges would bring up her dance background ever week and also the judges underscored ever week but her last week. Go back listen to the judges feedback from her dances they normally had nothing but good things to say about but yet she would get the same scores as people that the judges feedback was telling them what the need to work on still.
I agree with your comment. It's a plus, but there are so many different nuances when comparing the two styles. It's like having Taylor Swift start competing in a competition show titled Opera Singing with the Stars (Perhaps TayTay's not the best representative. Demi Lovato?). You're trained one way, but all of those things you're used to doing your whole life have to be changed. Some people adapt to situations more easily. I feel like that would be the case for dancers if they're all auditioning in a room and need to perform a certain dance sequence on the fly. So people like Heather have an edge. But then what about athletes? Don't they also have an edge because they have the athleticism to carry out the most grueling routines (as well as draw in elements of dance)? I'm thinking in particular gymnasts and ice dancers (Meryl Davis and Charlie White).
Julianne was never unfair at the show, Derek is the best male pro and there's nothing Julianne can do about it, she gives the 10 he deserves. And let's not forget the fact that Heather Morris was eliminated only because she was causing to much controversy, there's no way she had the least amount of votes that night, DWTS eliminated her after the "beyonce's background dancer" controversy...even the judges were giving her a bad time so they can seem impartial
Of course Derek is the best male pro every time he's on...hard not to be when he consistently gets all the talent. Other than Ricki Lake/Marilu Henner, and even they weren't the worst in the bunch, can you name a time where Derek didn't get a star with talent? That alone gives him the edge over the so called pimpage of the Chmerkovskiy brothers, because even Maks has had his fair share of complete duds.
Jennie Garth, Shannon Elizabeth, Brooke Burke, Joanna Krupa, Maria Menounos, Kellie Pickler, Amber Riley, Amy Purdy, Bethany Mota, Bindi Irwin all with little or no previous dance experience. By comparison, Val has had 11 partners, only 1 wasn't seriously trained with dance experience (Sherri Shepherd - who admitted she had had dance lessons from Chmerkovskiys dance school before the show) That's not to say Val isn't great, just don't diminish Derek's accomplishments, after all he is the only pro with emmy's for choreography, and they aren't easily awarded.
+jdblott I said ones that were not talented dancers, not ones with dance experience, because one can turn out to be a good dancer even without experience, so don't get me wrong here. It's true that all the stars you mentioned had no dance experience, but even so, it's not like any of them were just flat out uncoordinated and had no prayer at learning how to dance. Derek/Val have never gotten partners that were that bad at dancing that no amount of training would've turned them into contenders to win it all, while pretty much every other star has, even Julianne/Mark/Maks.

Danielle Johnson Jennifer Grey had been taking dance classes for years from Louis VanAmstel, she had her hair styled like "Baby" from "Dirty Dancing" because she wanted to evoke everyone's sentimentality of that movie, she sadly talked about Patrick Swayze and his death as if it was such a huge tragedy for her- even though the two hated each other- and no one thought it was unfair advantage that she had so much dancing experience?? Well, next to someone like Bristol Palin, of course that was an unfair advantage?? Of course she would be waaay better than her and any other untrained celebrity out there. (I'm only using Bristol Palin as an example, because I can't remember who all were contestants that season)...I LOOOVE "Dirty Dancing", it literally is my favorite movie of all time because I was obsessed with it as a child, and Jennifer (who would only agree to appear of she got her pick of partners, and voila, she picked arguably the best pro and choreographer on the show- Derek) was absolutely fabulous and amazing on her season of "Dancing with the Stars", but she clearly stacked the deck and had an unfair advantage over every other contestant. She should have never been allowed to participate being that she had taken years of classes from Louis in the first place...So I believe Kyle should have won, he was the epitome of what this show was supposed to be about, non-dancers that learn and get better as the show progresses

I certainly thought the season with Olympic swimmer, Ryan Lochte would have been on your list. He lied in Rio that he was robbed at gunpoint, just to hide the fact that he was drunk and vandalized some property. Then goes on DWTS and two angry Brazilians attempt to charge at him while he was on stage. That incident gets over-looked by some cpls fooling around??
Dude, all of those scandals happened this recent Season 24, Heather and Normani had previous dance experience (but again, not the same kind of dance so it doesn't count!) Bonner and Sharna's rumored affair, David going way farther than he should have because of votes, and last but not least: Heather, Nancy Kerrigan, Simone Biles, and Normani getting shock eliminations.
unfortunately the show is never gonna be fair, whether it's because the show is a popularity contest with voters or because of some sort of behind the scenes favoritism (both of which the show is guilty of). you have to just try and enjoy the show despite it and try to make a difference with votes, cause god knows I've been annoyed for several seasons of watching derek hough win due to his popularity when other contests deserved the win over his partner.

Derek without a doubt was the true winner of his first 3 wins : NO ONE was better than Brooke in S7, NO ONE was Better than Nicole in S10, NO ONE was better than Jennifer in S11 (I was rooting for Kyle but come on Jennifer was unbeatable she was yards better). I think Zendaya was better than Kellie, I didn't think he should have won that season (S16), and he his win in S17 was obvious because Corbin kept messing up in the finals and was too far behind Amber in points to beat her. Was rooting for Nick in Season 21 tho. But then again Shawn was better than Melissa in S15 so I think he deserved 5 Mirrorballs but 4/6 Mirrorballs with the partners he did win with
Marie didn't have a very good free style, which is the make it or break it of a lot of the dancers. Same with Mya against Marie's brother Donny. The one with the killer free style that didn't quite make it was Sadie Robertson, against Alfonso. Alfonso might not have danced for a long time, but Sadie had absolutely NO dance experience at all, and made runner up.

Previous dancing experience is such a shit excuse as ballroom is hard and they're just as new to it as anyone. Heather Morris Mackenzie Ziegler both got ripped. I hope JoJo wins this season and is not just being used for her fame for the show like they clearly did with Mackenzie.

Another controversy was one of the judges helped chorograph the dance moves on Mulan Rogue video of Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mya and Lil' Kim with Missy Elliott, and he wound up judging mya and Lil' Kim on DWTS.

Can we address the plethora of minority women who have gotten robbed of the "Coveted Mirrorball Trophy"!!! Laila Ali - That women's movements flowed like butter. Mel B and Sabrina Bryan for robben in the same season and Sabrina got robbed twice. Lil Kim - Come on now she was phenomenal. Mya - Donny Osmond won her season. Something just ain't right. Zendaya - This speaks for itself. At 16 this young lady completely slayed the competition and still lost. Brandy and Bristol Palin were in the bottom 2 and Brandy got sent home. Go watch the clip of everyone's face, including Brandy's. That clip tells it all. Tamar Braxton got slandered for saying she thought she was the best dancer left of her season. Newsflash, she's supposed to think that. Neither Simone Biles nor Normani Kordei placed even 2nd and we all know this was completely ridiculous. Hell, Wanya Morris even got robbed on his season. That man had the highest cummulative scores yet they still found a way to vote him off. I say Amber Riley and Kristi Yamaguchi got lucky that they didn't get robbed because thay would've been complete shenanigans. Bottom line is this, Women of Color and DWTS don't mix regardless of how good they dance.

I have been watching this show since the beginning with my mother who was a professional dance instructor and taught me to be as well. We have both judged competition and interviewed performers for professional stage productions for years almost always as a team since 1977-2011 when I asked my mother to just be a spectator. I have seen some stupid stuff on this show but there are definitely a few that stand out. I later found out that there were contractual obligations tied to the winner of the season. Paige Vanzant was the season best when she was second place due to her obligations that prohibited her from the winning person's obligations of the contract. She was definitely far better than her place in the final result. This caused me to do some deep research into the show and the rules that have been changed almost every year
Heather Morris deserved more, at least the finals. Julianna Hough should NOT be judge Maks seducing all his partners: Who can blame him or them? Of course, there was politics involved in Bristol Palin getting that far.
I think the biggest controversy should be this whole previous season and the way it treated the women. Heather Morris gets wrongfully eliminated, They constantly tore down and picked at Simone and Normani and they get eliminated before the baseball player who couldn't even dance. But all in all, I'm pretty confident this show is rigged. They already have who they want to win from week one and they praise them every week while tearing down and eliminating the people who could possibly beat them. For example Rumer Willis won over Riker Lynch when he was clearly the better dancer, all to give Val his first MBT. Willow Sheilds was also wrongfully eliminated that season because of she had gone on longer, she would've been the best dancer. I always thought it was rigged, but after this last season I'm positive.
Selena Lollin Imo, Rumer was the better Latin ballroom dancer, mostly because she had a Latin ballroom-trained partner in Val. Riker was good, but I always found him a bit sloppy in his footwork, which is curious considering he competed in Latin ballroom dance competitions when he was younger, against Lindsay and Witney. I think it had to do with Allison's lack of Latin ballroom training and experience, Riker was actually more experienced than her. For Willow, while she was great and eliminated WAY too soon, she was 4th place at best compared to Nastia, Riker and Rumer.
You missed them firing Brooke Burke not to mention Masks talking back to the judges, Sabrina Bryant, also when Ryan got attacked on stage and when Marie passed out. Please make another list!
the people who accuse celebs of prior dance experience have never danced a day in their life🙄 solo dancing and partner ballroom dancing are pretty much 2 entirely different sports. ballroom dancing is an entirely different set of skills and any dancer will tell you that, it is like starting from scratch.
legit number one is happening now with the jr's..... Kenzie was on dance moms for over 5 years.. and was dancing since she was like 2 or 3.. shes now 14.. so like 11 years..
that was a total disaster. Many of the pros hate her.-Maks, Derek, Mark. the only thing that made it funny to see that Abby Lee Miller made Len Goodman who is always a jerk look like a saint throughout the show.
I wouldn't say Len is a jerk, but he is quite strict. ALM definitely made him look like a saint, he looked so annoyed by her the entire episode and Bruno had to tell her to shut up at one point because she kept talking over his critique. The best parts of that episode were when Maks said he didn't care what ALM had to say and Derek started clapping in the background, and Peta laughing when ALM held up an 8 while the other judges gave 9s and a 10 lol
what is often forgotten, is that some of the votes are for the pros too. Although the you're meant to be voting for the stars, of course some pros are more appealing than others. Sometimes I think awesome stars get eliminated because their pros are less popular than others

Alfonso has s both.. as far as the contestants, they are out there getting Paid, they can have an option but don’t bring down the house if you’re not winning (or are winning) depending on who’s crying. One more thing.. having a sister judging her brother is not a bad thing, matter of fact she will probably be harder on him because she knows his potential.
How about the time Abby from "Dance Moms" was a guest judge and all the pros hated her? I remember Maks telling her he didn't respect her judgment of him, or something like that, lol.
I had blocked Bristol's dancing from my brain. LOL. It's also not accurate that Peta was involved with Damian Whitewood just before getting engaged to Maks. She broke up with him in early 2012, and started dating Maks later that year. They broke up and later got back together in 2015. The only partner Maks has ever confirmed dating was Willa Ford. He and Meryl were never a couple, and neither were he and Erin.
Zendaya had previous dance experience: she also had a good understanding of musicality and Meryl Davis was an ice skater: she was basically a dancer, but on ice so it wasn't just Alfonso Ribeiro who had some dance experience.

Even before Jennifer, there's been controversy about Mario Lopez, Mya, and Nicole Scherzinger being allowed to be on the show because of their previous dance experience, and even athletes like Shawn Johnson and former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Melissa Rycroft weren't immune to those critiques

We all know reality shows are only 5-10% reality. The show runners and networks decide who stays and goes in these types of shows. They include "voting" so fans think they have a say and therefore are more invested. It's actually a really smart move on their part.

90% of the time, it was actually Maks giving Val the lowest score of all 4 judges, while CA/Bruno were actually more favorable when it came to giving Val high scores. And in that episode, may I point out that the harshest criticism of Val's original partner, Tamar Braxton, actually came from Maks? Let's not forget also that in that switch up week, Val happened to be paired with eventual winner Bindi Irwin, who was already racking up high scores by that point of the competition, so is it really favoritism if Val got good scores when paired with one of the better dancers that season? If anyone had reason to complain about those switch up scores, it was Sharna, because her partner was the one getting reamed by Maks, no thanks to his temporary partner Witney phoning in the choreography that week.
Tomo18x i remember that was in the switch up week. Bindi was with val so Maks gave that 10 to bindi not Val. And Val's original partner was with another pro and I remember he criticized her a lot and didn't give her good scores which shows that he is not favoring his brother at all
maria sous That's right. And Bindi had already received a 10 the week before and for her dance with Val, all the judges except Maks gave her 9s. Maks also gave a 10 to Alexa PenaVega who was dancing with Derek that week. He did critique Tamar Braxton, Val's original partner, a bit but the other judges were way harsher towards her and really underscored her in comparison to the other contestants later in the show. They gave her 7s while Maks gave an 8.

Carolina Ureña that doesn't mean she wasn't allowed to be there. she wasn't trained in ballroom. There was people with dance experiences and people without dance experiences in the very first season. There have been numerous dancers on before her. So that's way her elimination was bs unfair. Most people didn't even give her a chance and just didn't vote for her cuz her dance background which was unfair to her. expecially when the show has had people like riker that actually had ballroom training and Alfonso that danced on Broadway and many others with just as much dance experiences as her. plus the show was kind of unfair to her too. They had her dance in the middle every week but her last week. the judges would bring up her dance background ever week and also the judges underscored ever week but her last week. Go back listen to the judges feedback from her dances they normally had nothing but good things to say about but yet she would get the same scores as people that the judges feedback was telling them what the need to work on still.

I agree with your comment. It's a plus, but there are so many different nuances when comparing the two styles. It's like having Taylor Swift start competing in a competition show titled Opera Singing with the Stars (Perhaps TayTay's not the best representative. Demi Lovato?). You're trained one way, but all of those things you're used to doing your whole life have to be changed. Some people adapt to situations more easily. I feel like that would be the case for dancers if they're all auditioning in a room and need to perform a certain dance sequence on the fly. So people like Heather have an edge.
But then what about athletes? Don't they also have an edge because they have the athleticism to carry out the most grueling routines (as well as draw in elements of dance)? I'm thinking in particular gymnasts and ice dancers (Meryl Davis and Charlie White).

Other than Ricki Lake/Marilu Henner, and even they weren't the worst in the bunch, can you name a time where Derek didn't get a star with talent? The funny thing is, both Ricki Lake and Marilu Henner had previous dance experience as well.
Jennie Garth, Shannon Elizabeth, Brooke Burke, Joanna Krupa, Maria Menounos, Kellie Pickler, Amber Riley, Amy Purdy, Bethany Mota, Bindi Irwin all with little or no previous dance experience.
By comparison, Val has had 11 partners, only 1 wasn't seriously trained with dance experience (Sherri Shepherd - who admitted she had had dance lessons from Chmerkovskiys dance school before the show)
That's not to say Val isn't great, just don't diminish Derek's accomplishments, after all he is the only pro with emmy's for choreography, and they aren't easily awarded.
+jdblott I said ones that were not talented dancers, not ones with dance experience, because one can turn out to be a good dancer even without experience, so don't get me wrong here. It's true that all the stars you mentioned had no dance experience, but even so, it's not like any of them were just flat out uncoordinated and had no prayer at learning how to dance. Derek/Val have never gotten partners that were that bad at dancing that no amount of training would've turned them into contenders to win it all, while pretty much every other star has, even Julianne/Mark/Maks.

(I'm only using Bristol Palin as an example, because I can't remember who all were contestants that season)...I LOOOVE "Dirty Dancing", it literally is my favorite movie of all time because I was obsessed with it as a child, and Jennifer (who would only agree to appear of she got her pick of partners, and voila, she picked arguably the best pro and choreographer on the show- Derek) was absolutely fabulous and amazing on her season of "Dancing with the Stars", but she clearly stacked the deck and had an unfair advantage over every other contestant. unfortunately the show is never gonna be fair, whether it's because the show is a popularity contest with voters or because of some sort of behind the scenes favoritism (both of which the show is guilty of). you have to just try and enjoy the show despite it and try to make a difference with votes, cause god knows I've been annoyed for several seasons of watching derek hough win due to his popularity when other contests deserved the win over his partner.

Derek without a doubt was the true winner of his first 3 wins : NO ONE was better than Brooke in S7, NO ONE was Better than Nicole in S10, NO ONE was better than Jennifer in S11 (I was rooting for Kyle but come on Jennifer was unbeatable she was yards better). I think Zendaya was better than Kellie, I didn't think he should have won that season (S16), and he his win in S17 was obvious because Corbin kept messing up in the finals and was too far behind Amber in points to beat her. Was rooting for Nick in Season 21 tho. But then again Shawn was better than Melissa in S15 so I think he deserved 5 Mirrorballs but 4/6 Mirrorballs with the partners he did win with

Marie didn't have a very good free style, which is the make it or break it of a lot of the dancers. Same with Mya against Marie's brother Donny. The one with the killer free style that didn't quite make it was Sadie Robertson, against Alfonso. Alfonso might not have danced for a long time, but Sadie had absolutely NO dance experience at all, and made runner up.

Surprised the Hope Solo/Maks controversy wasn't on the list. She accused him of abusing her in rehearsals and had filed a lawsuit against him. That's like...the most scandalous thing that's ever happened on this show.
Well the number one is BS, so he had moves, that doesn't matter, when judges look for proper ballroom forms. And so is the second one, I never noticed Julianne unfairly judgeing her brother to his benefit. I don't think "affairs" belong to this list, because this is a dance competition noone should care, who is sleeping with who, unless they do it on the dancefloor. Btw: Peta and Damien broke up in 2012 and she got engaged to Maks in 2015. I wouldn't call that "shortly". Sure they had an on and off relationship, but that is noone's business either.
Previous dancing experience is such a shit excuse as ballroom is hard and they're just as new to it as anyone. Heather Morris Mackenzie Ziegler both got ripped. I hope JoJo wins this season and is not just being used for her fame for the show like they clearly did with Mackenzie.

I have been watching this show since the beginning with my mother who was a professional dance instructor and taught me to be as well. We have both judged competition and interviewed performers for professional stage productions for years almost always as a team since 1977-2011 when I asked my mother to just be a spectator. I have seen some stupid stuff on this show but there are definitely a few that stand out. I later found out that there were contractual obligations tied to the winner of the season. Paige Vanzant was the season best when she was second place due to her obligations that prohibited her from the winning person's obligations of the contract. She was definitely far better than her place in the final result. This caused me to do some deep research into the show and the rules that have been changed almost every year

I've never watched Dancing With the Stars, but I have watched Strictly Come Dancing... So can you do a video to with that show? Please?
I think the biggest controversy should be this whole previous season and the way it treated the women. Heather Morris gets wrongfully eliminated, They constantly tore down and picked at Simone and Normani and they get eliminated before the baseball player who couldn't even dance. But all in all, I'm pretty confident this show is rigged. They already have who they want to win from week one and they praise them every week while tearing down and eliminating the people who could possibly beat them. For example Rumer Willis won over Riker Lynch when he was clearly the better dancer, all to give Val his first MBT. Willow Sheilds was also wrongfully eliminated that season because of she had gone on longer, she would've been the best dancer. I always thought it was rigged, but after this last season I'm positive.
Selena Lollin Imo, Rumer was the better Latin ballroom dancer, mostly because she had a Latin ballroom-trained partner in Val. Riker was good, but I always found him a bit sloppy in his footwork, which is curious considering he competed in Latin ballroom dance competitions when he was younger, against Lindsay and Witney. I think it had to do with Allison's lack of Latin ballroom training and experience, Riker was actually more experienced than her.
For Willow, while she was great and eliminated WAY too soon, she was 4th place at best compared to Nastia, Riker and Rumer.

I wouldn't say Len is a jerk, but he is quite strict. ALM definitely made him look like a saint, he looked so annoyed by her the entire episode and Bruno had to tell her to shut up at one point because she kept talking over his critique. The best parts of that episode were when Maks said he didn't care what ALM had to say and Derek started clapping in the background, and Peta laughing when ALM held up an 8 while the other judges gave 9s and a 10 lol

what is often forgotten, is that some of the votes are for the pros too. Although the you're meant to be voting for the stars, of course some pros are more appealing than others. Sometimes I think awesome stars get eliminated because their pros are less popular than others

She broke up with him in early 2012, and started dating Maks later that year. They broke up and later got back together in 2015. The only partner Maks has ever confirmed dating was Willa Ford. He and Meryl were never a couple, and neither were he and Erin.

Some of these controversies make me think that people take this kind of shows way to seriously.
We all know reality shows are only 5-10% reality. The show runners and networks decide who stays and goes in these types of shows. They include "voting" so fans think they have a say and therefore are more invested. It's actually a really smart move on their part.
