    I'm a Vietnam VET ( U S Air Force ), . I was stationed in Saigon , MACV headquarters and active during TET 1968. I'm now 78 and still tear up thinking about my tour and the death of so many.

      Yeah! My brother a US Marine Radio Transmision Operator in the Fall of 1967-1968, DMZ, Dong Ha. After 2 months, I noticed him changing from his letters Sent home: emotionally and psychologically. He came home alive. He was never to be my "little brother" again. I love him more than anything. There are moments that he's just a shell, a haunted ghost. I Hate War and what Kissinger, McNamera and Nixon, LBJ did. I love the men and women who served. I've lost too many people because of that war. Including my sweet love an F-4 fighter pilot. Laos still claims his body. 😢 Insanity!

      @@ImKat46 it's a bit unrelated but it's something I want to share to a complete stranger, If somebody asked my what was the hardest thing I did during my service, my answer would be seeing my family again, It's the eyes that looked upon that hurt me the most, it's the eyes that silently asked " where has my sweet little boy gone off to and replaced by this.. stranger, this shell that was my son ".. Even though I love my family so much I had to leave after 2 months being home. Haven't been home for 2 years now and I'm still afraid of going back and end up hurting my love one.

    Hi Im Vietnamese and im always obsessed with Vietnam War even though I wasnt born at that time ( im just 15 yo ) and its consequences. I just wanna say that they, your brothers, your husbands and also vietnamese ppl whoever sacrificed for this cruel war were, are being and will always be remembered by us. This war always reminds a lot of Vietnames ppl such as me and my friends to keep on, to study hard, to do our best for this world, to live our best as if its our last day on Earth. Respect and bless you.

    Three of my uncles and father went to Vietnam different branches, only one didn’t return home. My dad never spoke about it, until I enlisted in the Marine Corps and was deployed to Iraq twice and then did Afghanistan in 2009, after I was medically retired,
    My dad was the only person who could understand what I was going through.

    2/502 INF 101st ABN Vietnam 70-71.... It's odd; tears swell up in my eyes, but I can't cry... I just ache when I hear this. In the USA we were told not to wear our uniforms off base as it upset the locals. A brutal unnessary war fought by kids. Managed by the incompetance of politicians. This song captures the essence of it all. Such a waste of human life. And for what? I remember how pumped up everyone was that if Hanoi won the war we'd all be living under communism. 52,000 lives later and we end up as trading partners with the "enemy." - USAF - '62-66' however, I was lucky and didn't get deployed to the war zone. Supported the aircraft supporting our troops. Proud to have served. Thankful to all those who paid the ultimate price. I get angry when I listen to this song. The senslessness of what happened and the heartache it brought to thousands of families who were affected is almost too much to bear. Forever grateful.

    I was 17 years old when I got to Vietnam-1966 through 1969 (My mom had to sign a waiver for me), You could not be drafted under the age of 18 but you could enlist with parents’ signature. I grew up fast and learned a lot, good and bad. (I am now 73 and still learning). I was stationed on the USS Providence and also stationed in Country at a place called "Monkey Mountain" close to DaNang,. I spent 3 tours of duty in and around Vietnam. 3 of my high school friends were killed in Vietnam, I was spared. I participated in the TET Offensive in Feb 1968, that was bad. Somewhere along the way I was exposed to Agent Orange (Nasty Stuff) I am now on disability for the effects of agent orange. When I was discharged and came home to the States we arrived in San Francisco, and there were a lot of protesters spitting on us and throwing rocks and eggs and called us baby killers. That was our welcome home. I tell you this to say to you, that whatever your position is or was on the Vietnam war, it was not the veteran who got us into the war, most of us went because we were patriots and loved our country. Blame the politicians, yes, but not the veteran. To all Vietnam Vets out there, you are not forgotten. As a previous combat Vet myself, I salute you my friend.*************

    • @AJ-yw7hf
      @AJ-yw7hf 3 роки тому +1

      You were probably young. There are many people who care that people have gone through war. When the subject of war comes up, my thoughts always go to how to prevent war in the 1st place. It might sound silly to some folks, but love truly is the answer in this world. I'm not oversimplifying things. What I'm talking about would be a Large part of the solution to help stop wars from starting. For ex, if everyone loved others as themselves, there are things that entire countries of some halfway decent people wouldn't go along with that they currently go along with. For ex, China denies its citizens freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, etc, but our country still does business w/ that evil system so our American citizens can get things they want cheaply & so business owners here & in China can get wealthy off the backs of the poor souls who live in that kind of slavery in China. Through that unethical system, the Chinese government gets even more powerful, too.
      It's often these 'little' choices of millions of people that add up & lead to bad things building up in the world, like people going along w/ China's evil system to get cheap products, which makes the rich richer & makes evil systems more powerful. I trained myself to remember most of the time to check the label on most things I buy to see if they're made in China. If I accidentally buy something from China, I pray a prayer for human rights & democracy in China. If I'm looking to make an online purchase, I try to remember to ask the online company where the item is made & I let the company know why I'm not buying it if it's made in China. One of these days, I'll email or call my congressmembers at least once to say we should change our trade system to not continue making American workers compete w/ virtual slave labor in China & to not profit from that system but to support democracy in China instead. Jesus taught to love God with all our heart, soul, & mind, & to love others as ourself. If we ignore China's abuses of its people so we can have cheap goods, is that the same as loving others as ourself? Nope. Who talks about this, right? Hardly anyone, but I think the reason for that is that sometimes it takes a few people to start talking about it first to start other people thinking & help wake them up. I don't mean to oversimplify a problem that has plagued mankind probably forever: the starting of wars. What I'm talking about is part of the solution, though. One more thing. Everyone who has ever lived past early childhood has done things that they'd change if they could do it over again. God forgives everyone who sincerely repents & asks his forgiveness in Jesus's name, as long as we also forgive others. Jesus loves you & loves everyone & wants what's best for us. Jesus taught to pray even for an enemy. Once upon a time, doing that is what saved me. (I mean from something I was going through that no one really knew I was going through).

    In the palm
    Of our hand
    They ruled the night
    And the night
    Seemed to last as long as six weeks
    On parris island
    We held the coastline
    They held the highlands

    A pretty profound song from a man who never served in the military at all. Billy Joel you could have served during Vietnam, but you would rather play your piano then serve your country. I don't know where you got you info for your song it sure was not in the service. Its a good song I only wish a Veteran had wrote it.

    There are a lot of videos for this song out there. Most are jingoistic BS trying to glorify something that had no glory. This one squares very well with the stories I have heard from the vets I’ve known over the years. Probably the best men I will ever know l. The respect shown to a worthy adversary, towards the end, is pretty moving too. I met a couple of NVA vets a couple years ago on a trip to Vietnam. I asked one how he felt about fighting, and killing, Americans. The old tank crewman teared up and said (through his daughter, who translated in fluent English) “I never wanted to kill anyone at all. But we were invaded by foreigners. I had no choice”. Any patriotic American in that position would have to say the same thing. All nations have the right to make their own decisions, be they good decisions, or bad ones. We might not always like it...but would we ask to be treated any differently??
    Not long ago, I saw an article about how the Vietnamese People’s Navy now helps our US Navy keep an eye on the Chinese nuclear sub base at Sanya, Hainan Island. Right next to the Gulf of Tonkin. Good guys to have on your side. The Vietnamese only fought us for 15-20 years, depending on your start and end dates. They have fought (and usually defeated) the Chinese for 3,000 years. The Vietnamese KNOW who their real enemies are these days. Now they want to buy a bunch of F-16’s from us. They know. I say we let them buy whatever they want. Just look at the Brits, Germany and Japan. Old enemies make the best friends.

    Do me a favor and edit your video! At 5:11 you have one of the rare pictures of Mexicans soldiers killing students at a rally in Mexico City, in the Tlatelolco neighborhood. Over 300 students were killed that day, October 2, 1968, almost 50 years ago. It does not belong in you video!

    The Americans are attacking the Vietnamese bunker... Surrounded on all sides and shouting;
    "Vietnamese, surrender... You are surrounded! "
    And they are answered from there;
    - "And de zh ti baciv, shob Vietnamese khloptsi zdavalysya..? Petro charge..!"

    LBJ to his USMC daily briefing officer - a colonel - when he told LBJ to get out of Viet Nam: "I can't! Too many of my friends are making too much money!" That's what all of the grunts were doing in Nam...making money for LBJ's friends aka Wall St. bankers! Thanks for your "service" Marines!
    Boy, were you guys chumps! Cannon fodder for Wall St. bankers!

    An undeclared needless war declared only by political armchair warriors. So many young men killed, and then treated with hate and distain when they, who were fortunate enough to survive, returned home. They deserved a heroes welcome but in fact were spat on...such a disgraceful human tragedy 😢. RIP Marine Corporal Christopher Toppi, 19 y.o. killed 27 January 1968 Quang Tri, We honor you past and present Thank you for your service ❤ ❤ ❤ 🇺🇸
