    Gentle wide Q without being surgical, notching bands with a purpose, so good. Loved this one

    Thank you for this mate! This is a common issue nowadays with virtual amps so this is really helpful. Looking forward for more of these fix in the mix vids!

      Thanks mate! Virtual amps are definitely getting better, but there are so many variables, the type of guitar, pick ups, mic placement etc etc and sometimes things sound better at the time, only to realize later on that perhaps it’s not that great haha

    Very informative video there! The way you approached this gives me a better understanding how we should tackle harsh sounding guitars using this intelligent EQ, even then the guitars translate well with the mix. I use a Pro-Q 3 too and they are a great investment for surgical EQ moves. Keep up the great work mate!

    Great video, really like your down to earth teaching and also that you give tips about trying to get a DI track if possible, but also how you can make the harsh track way better with some strategic EQ and compression moves. The cut between 2kHz-3 kHz is easy to hear and very effective, but it's the two cuts at 700 Hz and 333 Hz that are really lifting the quality. I wonder how you found the 333 Hz area? Are you listening to the vocal to find where the guitar is masking this area? Keep these videos coming, your channel has become one of my favourite YT-channels recently, high quality stuff, great songs and no fluff! Thanks again.

      Thanks mate!
      Sometimes it’s easy figure out the offending sound by muting it and seeing if something clears up, in this case the guitars were making the vocals feel a little lost, but when I took the guitars away they sounded good, so then just listening and finding where the vocals are being eaten up, usually around 700-800hz in guitars has this effect, and 300hz is a mudzone.

      @rome8180 Рік тому +2

      Yeah, those two cuts you mentioned made an amazing difference. At first after hearing just the cut at 2900, I thought the guitar sounded too dark. But that was only because those other cuts hadn't been made yet. Immediately everything cleared up and it fit so well in the mix. The guitar wasn't any brighter, but that didn't matter. It just fit.

  • @rome8180
    @rome8180 Рік тому +2

    Good distorted guitar tones are what I struggle with the most. I tend to make my guitars too bright, thin, and loud. When I listen closely to my favorite records, the guitar is always a lot darker and more pushed back in the mix than I make it. It seems like it would be easy to apply this knowledge. But every time I try to cut a lot of the upper mids, the guitar just seems way too dull and muffled to me. It's sometimes easy to know what to do but hard to know HOW to do it, if that makes sense.

    • @spinlightstudios
      @spinlightstudios  Рік тому +1

      Yeah I understand. I’ve done the same plenty of times, making electrics a bit too bright. But it can work sometimes too, sometimes the problem is just the level! Just turning those bright guitars down till they sit better. It’s tricky too, because every guitar tone is a little different so there isn’t really a one size fits all!

    Bro I've been having a hell of time trying to dial in a solid (death) metal tone, if you've heard Peeling Flesh, their guitars sound perfect.
