When I went to El Salvador with my mom to visit my oldest sister the outside of her house had these plants. I loved playing with them as a kid. It was so interesting and amazing to see. I want this plant now! lol

Very cool learning these have high concentrations of dmt and remembering playing with them as a kid. Kinda brings everything full circle.

The plant uses this to scare away the insects that try to eat the leaves with the movement and to make it look smaller and less appetizing to bigger animals looking for a snack. It’s a pretty impressive tactic

It is also believed that the plant also balances fluid management in the leaves when touched. Though I was little, when I heard this.

    Called "Makahiya"
('bashfully-inclined' - literal english translation.) plant in the Philippines, in abundance in the cemetery area of my province in Magdalena, Laguna...
As kids, we used to play with these and had friendly contests as to who can slowly break the stem, without allowing the leaves to fold!
No winners on this, no matter how hard & careful we try!
Trivia, most of the species we have there actually have the purple to lavander undercolor of the leaves which becomes apparent when they are folded.
Fascinating plant because it actually moves by itself when touched.
The actual English name it has in the Phil. is the "Touch Me Not" plant.😊

Interesting, thank you. It's after 2am, & as usual I can't sleep, so I'm flipping through TV channels and happened upon a scene where a person holding a small plant tells another, " here.. gently touch the leaves" etc, of course I miss the name...so Google, and again I'm led down the proverbial rabbit hole. Lol Your comment, led to looking up Magdalena, Laguna province in the Philippines, I took a nice tour by drone of the province, found out Fernando Poe Jr, known as the ‘Da King of Philippine Movies, town of Magdalena was one of his film set favourites..languages, history..etc etc. It's beautiful. Oh well, at least this rabbit hole lead to geography, history of the Philippines so it isn't useless facts I usually have a knack of retaining. Take care, Christmas is coming up so I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

The reason why it closes is becaused when we touched the plant, the specific parts of the plant released chemicals the chemicals caused the cells in the pulvini to lose water but when water is loss, there is no more turgor pressure as an result the cells collapsed which caused the leaf to closed

Swordsmen use to give their swords a will of their own with plant extract potions so when an insidious humanoid impostor trespass in their area the sword would pivot on the frog and tip the swordsman to obey the sword draw the blade and slay the cunning monster, seldom having blood.
Things like make the scabbard out of white oak or red maple next pour sorghum cold press milk down the scabbard mixed 50/50 with olive oil sword on hip balance 70/30.
In Quest of the Holy Grail Potion~Good-luck!

Interesting. What is it that receives the stimuli from touch ( I am guessing). Maybe it is a form of pressure sensitive cells... What do you think?

    • @jarmo_kiiski
      @jarmo_kiiski 8 років тому +2

It has obviously got some kind of receptor cells on the leaves. The whole folding thing is probably for protecting the leaves.

    • @doodlebob-t1t

it folds so when an animal is grasing, the leaves fold in and so the animal thinks there is not much to eat.

The leaves of these TickleMe Plants, I found on line, will close in the evening as well or when placed under a pot. My science students love growing these. I believe turgor (water pressure) in the cells change with stimulated by touch.

I'm here from an article about plant learning. Apparently if you drop one of these, it folds up. But if you drop it a ton of times, it learns not to fold up anymore when dropped, but still folds when shaken.

alphablood119 Actually, plants DO have somewhat of a response to “pain”
If someone breaks off a limb or damages the plant in another way repeatedly it will start to release “stress” hormones.
But yes, A plant doesn’t have a complicated biology (compared to animals) and has no nervous system so they’re not conscious in any way
