  • Due to a miscalculation I revised this video and it's even better because I now do a cost comparison for multiple products and reveal how much can be saved by making your own Homemade Surfaces for Pastel Painting.
Also, I just made a playlist on this channel which has 6 videos showing how to make your own homemade pastel papers.
    Happy Painting!!!!

My local Joann Fabrics store has a few choices for pastel grounds and there are always 40% or 50% off coupons to use when they are not on sale. They also have some mat board or thin foam core board. Thank you for your great content!

I think the U-Art folks will understand that we have a "precious stash" of papers that we use for special occasions, and in between those times we want to build our experience with the homemade stuff. The more homemade paper, the more practice! Right, Susan? G-r-i-n Thanks so much for doing all the legwork on this and answering the question on cost. (I'll def. be able to save my "precious stash" of Claire Fontaine)!

I might like working on the home made surface better than the costly pre-made papers!!

You did all that for us? Thanks so much. I happen to like using mat board because it's stiff, and I get it free from local framers.

Yes! I wish I had mentioned that about finding mat board free from framers ;) That makes it even cheaper!!

@@monetcafe I will have to ask my local framers about purchasing their scrap mattboard for cheap. I highly doubt they will give it away. Not from the US and we have a completely different culture.

Another terrific video! I was gonna let you know if anyone wants to sample this product the way you did here, they have the once ounce bottle on EBay for about $13 with free shipping. I think I am gonna try this myself. Thanks so much!

It is worth looking on ebay for picture framing companies that sell cut-offs of mountboard. You can get 10kg (A3/A4 size) of it for £19 in the UK from some ebay sellers and 5kg (A4 and smaller) for £10. A massive saving over the average UK prices.

Hi susan do you put the gesso/primer on both sides of the mat board to stop warping or do you have no problem with this happening. Thanks

The jar and the liquid is the same price. Can you interchange as they are not the same product. The jar is in acrylic and thick. Was not sure if it would have the same amount of micaceous oxide granules. Have you also used the jar? No worries about stating the jar. It took me a bit to catch it too

A word about all of Blick's SALES.
You see splashed across ads and promotions 60% OFF in big bold letters.
Then underneath you see in small pale letters 'list price'.
Ask any employee and they will admit to you that no Blick's merchandise has ever been sold at 'list price'.
LIST PRICE is a phony made-up exaggerated, inflated amount that is never charged.
But it appears that you are getting a great deal when you see that you are getting a 60% reduction in price.
    You are not

Renzo yes, I pretty much assumed that. It’s the same with other art supply stores such as Michael’s. Thanks for the confirmation on that.

Very interesting. I'll make a not to look into making my own surfaces the next time I make an order from Dick Blick. Which homemade surface do you think works the best?

James Holder I particularly like the technique of using the fine pumice gel mixed with Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold. It makes a great surface with a beautiful golden glow. I have a couple of videos sharing how to make this surface 👍🏻💜🤗
