Prophet Solomon did not practice magic. On the contrary, he fought magic. He lived in the same timeline as Haroot and Maroot, the two fallen angels. God tasked him with fighting magic. God gave him divine powers, not magic. His powers were much stronger than magic. Every time he confiscates magical scripts he would hide them under his throne because it was the only place where Jinn could not touch or come close to it. However, after he passed away, the Jinn convinced the Jews to extract the magic books and script from underneath Solomon's throne with the promise that they will inherit Solomon's power and domain. Off course it was a trick, and again, magic spread across earth. The book of Zohar and Kabbalah were derived from the magical books found under his throne.
One thing that I find curious, and haven't come across a tafsir or interpretation on it in detail, is why does God make a distinction in the Qur'an between what Harut and Marut taught in Babylon, what the demons later on did during Solomon's reign and the false accusation that he practiced sihr? Was Solomon's miracles akin to magic but they are haram now under Prophet Muhammad's shariah? Because building statues and monuments is also haram but we know Solomon made the Jinn under his command do so, so it was permissible under the shariah of his time.
Solomon Ring also appears in pop culture In the videogame Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey, Solomon's Ring can be crafted with rare materials. The ring bestows the player with immunity to all magic from hostile demons.
The truly great one would need know rings to summon the allegiance of anyone or anything knowing that the greatest power is the GOD presence that lies dormant in all but the greatest of them all. For the greatest of them all does not limit its power to the power of something external to itself.
