@@Pritam15 no it was started by Vajpayee ji, hence the name . UPA delayed this project by constructing only 1 KM in 10 yrs.

According to wikipedia The foundation stone of the project was laid on 28 June 2010 by Sonia Gandhi and as of September 2014, 4.4 km of the tunnel, i.e., half of 8.8 km planned length had been dug.
We need many such infra projects connecting NE and other remote areas...

Hats off to the BRO workers, engineers, technicians who sweated day & night to built this fantastic tunnel. Special thanks to the Government of India who provided the necessary funds for this project which had made life easier for the locals living in both side of the tunnel, tourists & fast movement of our armed forces to the border areas !

How is this the longest road tunnel in the world when there is Lærdal Tunnel in Norway which is 25kms long compared to Atal tunnel which is just 9 kms? This is also not the highest road tunnel, even though the highest road tunnel will also be in Himachal which is going to get ready by 2025.

It’s the matter of practical necessity! Whether you go with less distance tunnelling that's functional with all features or not, is what counts. We shouldn't cut or tunnel the mounains ranges for any of the records but the needs as per the needs of the society only.

At a length of 9.02 km, it is the highest highway single-tube tunnel above 10,000 feet (3,048 m) in the world. I will say its the best constructed Dual-use tunnel. The tunnel can be used to store ammo in a major war as it has side channels every 500 metres and this is useful if 2000lb JDAMs are dropped on one end by an enemy air force.
You could in theory put Brahmos, SAM, Akash , ERSAM, MRSAM , Rudram launchers inside the tunnel system
