I had same problem on my 2015 z07 after 6 years of HPDE days. took to dealer, good tech I know him, and it was a $7k rear diff replacement. It had a 2 year GM warrantee that ran out in June of this year. The replacement diff fluid was changed annually given track usage and sooner than recommended by GM. I drove it for two years, same level of track usage, and it failed 3 mos after warrantee ran out. I had a couple of horrendous spins 4 wheels off at 70 mph including one at low speed 40 mph at apex and got the check rear axel light. No evidence of any problems before that including my instructor driving it way faster than me. ( glad it didn’t happen to him) Even though it was only 3 mos out of warrantee, they would not fix it under warrantee. We checked all the codes and modules which checked out fine, plus all busses, battery, frame grounds and found nothing. But there was metal in the fluid and we are waiting for testing results on that. Same thing that happened on the original diff when I bought it new that required the above diff replacement. Other track guys tested it on street recently and found it to be sketchy ON THE STREET. No codes, errors, e diff guage show normal operation. We did NOT check the Alternator, so this is an excellent post. I will test soon and see what that does if its overcharging.
Of course! Just trying to bring awareness to the issue so people don’t feel lost if it ever occurs. Oil in the front grill is a new one to me. What are they saying about it?
I had a 2014 Z51 in 2017 and it was factory underfilled, and serviced at the dealer. Then they overfilled if and damaged the diff clutches. Changed the fluid again and sold it to a Used Car Dealer who wanted it. Seems all the E-LSD cars are having these issues even into C8. Changing the diff fluid every 20k and doing the hydraulic bleed every 30k seems to eliminate the issue. The rear diff modules are never the actual issue, it's the diff itself sadly.
My rear diff lite came on and motor went in limp mode. Turned out a plug wire came off and dropped cylinder. Replaced wire and no issue since. The vehicle did severe shimmer and strange feeling. Many of rear diff lights are actually misfire on cylinder.
This is the issue with late model Corvettes or any late model car, there are so many electronics & modules that when they all work together, they are awesome, but they are also a nightmare when they don't, compound the fact that as these cars age, parts are no longer manufactured for them just adding to the issues
I agree. I think it's a bad deal for GM that the alternator gets wonky and risks accidents. That could be a way bigger issue. "Service Rear Axle" is obviously a catch-all and it's pathetic the car has been out for so long and dealerships don't even know how to properly diagnose it the first time.
My C7Z has been at the dealership for 62 days getting the fuel pump replaced. It's been a complete nightmare. On top of that, it was broken into. I'm so frustrated withe this dealership.
@@stackenali7059 I am so sorry you are having to deal with that! My car was stolen last year so I know how you feel. I was one of the luckiest owners since my Z was recovered and no glass was broken. Is the dealership waiting on parts? Is your fuel pump related to the service rear axe or unrelated?
@kobyspurgin I remember when yours was stolen. I put a actually put a few airbags in my car after watching your video. Yes, it was waiting on parts. Then they got it all put back together only to find out the replacement fuel pump as bad. Then another 3 week wait. Nightmare. I live in the midwest and store the vehicle over the winter. Apparently storing C7s with full tanks causes corrosion on the fuel pump sensor. I was just driving along the road and the car suddenly shut off. No warning or DICs whatsoever. Just OFF! Like you, I was absolutly terrified.
@@stackenali7059 Wow!! The wait times are insane for one part (especially a mass produced car like the C7). If you need someone to keep your corvette’s fuel tank empty during the winter I can help you. I think it was 70° last Christmas in Dallas area.
lol I just got it last night on a date, good thing I saw your video before it happened, didn’t freak out as much, Also did notice my battery voltage was higher than normal before it happened. I dismissed the message drove home and switched cars for safety. The traction control light did come on for a second and then went away, whole ride home the slip percentage was showing so don’t know what to do now. Should I wait if it comes back on permanent or take it in to the dealer? Also for the over charging alternator what was the fix, new alternator or new battery?
@@gilbertnepomuceno8784 I would take your car in and have them look at the voltage spikes on your alternator and ask if it needs to be replaced. Tell them to watch my video if they have no idea. Good for you for making the responsible decision! How was the date haha?
My c7 Z06 throws service rear axle message when my battery basically dies and it starts back up and will give me that error plus the theft deterrent system. I simply turn it off the car and turn back on for it to be all good.
Mine did the same think this weekend. Battery would start car , but a jump box on it. Started with theft det , rear axle warning. Drove a few miles. Restarted with no issues at all.
If that's all you are having to deal with then you are in a much better position than I was lol. Thanks for watching and commenting, I am always interested in hearing what other reasons is causing that service notification to pop up.
I just had all my fluids flushed..Just because the age of the 2016 ZO6 with ZO7 pkg..On the way to the dealership a brake sensor code came on.. Had to have it calibrated.. The car only has 8,800 miles on it..SMH
Did the dealership know that you were going on a long road trip probably? They should’ve never told you the car was safe to drive in those conditions. I had to replace the differential under warranty on Mike Z06 and they put in a ZR one differential because that’s all that was available at the time. Good luck.
They understood how I would be driving. I didn't name the dealership because I don't want to deal with the headache of he said she said. I also realize it's not their fault if there isn't a clear answer online or in their books. As soon as I heard they had to call the engineers at GM I understood that this was uncharted territory for everyone.
@@Chad711m the last 45 seconds of the video I talk about it. Yes, alternator was overcharging and destroying parts. New alternator and we are good to go.

@@unknow8551 mine was close to that. If you aren’t getting the service rear axle message I wouldn’t worry about it unless your AC and all that stuff is off. If that’s the case then your car might be overcharging for sure

Appreciate you sharing these issues! More knowledge for the Vette journey.
Thank you for watching and being a contributor to the channel! It means a lot!
Maddening glad you are ok.
Thank you Bobbie! It was scary for sure! Hope you are doing well out west!
Great info
