Barry almost ran me over when I first saw them in concert at the autograph session. I was the first one in line for an autograph. My mother told me to watch out here they come. I looked over my shoulder and Barry put his hand on my shoulder and said, “ excuse me little buddy.” I was 13 in 1998.
Boy do the memories every come flying back, I was only 4 or 5 when "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego" first aired. These men don't know it, but they helped raise me as a kid, and were second family in a way, a familiar warm smiling face with incredible vocal range. I'm a fan for life, and will forever be grateful to Rockapalla for the great childhood memories, sighs.
Great memories of when my kids were little. They loved the show and Rockapella. I watched it mainly because of Rockapella. They were all so good, but being a bass myself, I was very impressed with their unique sounding and completely natural voiced bass singer. He seemed to be quite a character, also.
He was indeed. Barry Carl, the bassist, was "The Voice" (reference to God) and Mrs. Pumpkinklanger (an annoyed elderly neighbor) on the show, just as tenor Scott Lenard was the Dying Informant.
TherealRNO And in addition, Barry would sometimes be "The Baby on the Doorstep". It's still amazing to me how he could squeeze into that little basket. I also loved Scott as the Dying Informant, mostly because I'm an actress myself, but I have trouble with dramatic acting.
@@dinoboy1153 In a nutshell: It was a landmark children's geography gameshow that was based on the Broderbund software computer game which featured the title character as a cartoon woman crook who, along with her cartoon henchmen and women, stole world landmarks, locations, natural resources, etc., and it was up to children detectives to capture the criminals, return the stolen loot to its rightful location, and learn a truckload of world geography all the while. As for the Carmen Sandiego gameshow: it was produced by WQED Pittsburgh and WGBH Boston and aired on PBS for five years from 1991-1996. The series starred actor-comedian Greg Lee as the Host, the late actress-Broadway singer Lynne Thigpen as the Chief of all crime investigation, and Rockapella as the house band-and-comedy troupe. Every day, three preteen contestants from the New York City area referred to as "gumshoes" appeared on each episode to make every effort to capture Carmen and her criminal cohorts by showcasing their outstanding knowledge of geography and world history. The winning contestant would ultimately be awarded a free trip with their family to anywhere in the entire continent of North America (initially only the lower 48 United States in Season 1 of the show) if they were successful in identifying eight locations (seven in Season 1) within a randomly assigned continent (North America [upgraded from the United States in Season 3], Africa, Asia, Europe, or South America) appearing in the form of a life-size map thereof on the navy blue-colored television studio floor using special markers equipped with police car sirens atop the apparatuses--all in 45 seconds. The award-winning show was a classic and drew national acclaim from viewers young and old alike. Even though it never made it onto DVD, a majority of the series's episodes from all five seasons are available for viewing in full right here on UA-cam if you search "WITWICS". Enjoy!
I love hearing them sing this. @Rockapella - If any of you are reading these comments, thanks for sharing your voices with the world! You guys are truly Amazing!
I forgot completely about the song until I found it on my sister's iPod...now it's on my iPod and I will listen to it for the rest of my life! Do it Rockapella!!
Right. She's so awesome, she got three shows. Two PBS game shows--this being the theme of the first--and a cartoon on FOX that nows airs every Sunday morning on The Hub.
TheHowlingDark Indeed. It is her theme song, so of course, she'll like it. She might steal it, but she'll like it just the same. "See you next crime, detectives!" ~ Carmen Isabella Sandiego
@DarkAngelbaby1985: Well, the only two members from the WitWiCS time that are still in Rockapella are high tenor Scott & beatboxing Jeff. Jeff came in at the third season, whereas Scott was throughout the show, especially as The Dying Informant. The other prmary members, like front man Sean Altman & bass Barry Carl (as Ms. Pumpkinclanger & others) have left. They show up for Rockapella reunions, but for the most part, Sean has his own band--The Groovebarbers--who also now sing the iconic theme.
I get a strong Krusty the Clown vibe here -- like they really, REALLY resent having to sing this song all the time, and when they finish, they just go backstage and have a depressing smoke afterward.
That's Scott's way of singing. This is actually true, his notes are to high for a regular mic to handle, so he pulls it away to create a drawn out, distant sound. You can check every song where he takes high notes, he does the exakt same thing. And microphones can take up sound even if they are not pointed directly at your face, even those dynamic SM58's.
For the lineup in this video: Scott Leonard (high tenor, blond guy), Barry Carl (bass), Elliott Kerman (baritone), and Jeff Thacher (vocal percussion) were all on Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego? Kevin Wright (tenor, lead vocal) replaced founding member Sean Altman when Sean-- after being in the band for 11 years--left Rockapella in 1997 (two years after Carmen Sandiego stopped production, one year after the series went off the air). Of the above lineup: founding Rockapella member Elliott Kerman was in Rockapella for 18 years from 1986-2004; Barry Carl was in Rockapella for 14 years from 1988-2002; Kevin Wright was in Rockapella for 12 years from 1997-2009; Scott Leonard joined Rockapella in 1991 and Jeff Thacher joined Rockapella in 1993 (he didn't appear on Carmen Sandiego until its fifth and final season in 1995, however); Leonard and Thacher remain in Rockapella and have been the longest-standing members of the vocal band in its history.
@sheadambrosio: You've no inner-child or childhood for that matter to say that, since Carmen put them on the map. It is the most wanted song from generations of fans.
For some reason the vocal percussion solo is shortened in this version. I have an MP3 that is unmistakably this exact performance, but the solo went on a bit longer. (Not that I terribly mind... Jeff Thacher is awesome, it's just that it interrupts the song...)
@sheadambrosio- Why? They did what they set out to do and that was entertain tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of people with their music thru concerts and the DVD release. Besides, PBS and the show WITWICS (& it's theme song) put Rockapella on the map...
With all due respect to Scott Leonard -- and certainly Rockapella wouldn't have achieved what they have without him -- four guys singing on the streets of New York became Rockapella largely because of Barry Carl. Ask Sean Altman about that sometime.
You got to admit everyone's favourite part is when the guy with the really deep voice says were in the world is carmen Sandiego
Hoax Frost yep
When he says a thing at all is a fav part. Most interesting part is it is his natural voice too
Thought about it. You're right
Dude probably gets laid constantly.

“Which boy band was better NSYNC or Backstreet Boys?”
Me an intellectual:
PBS should show rockapella concerts on their prime time programming. Thumbs up if u agree.
@April Washington sis did you just comment on a 7 year old comment-
Owen Wilson sure knew how to sing back in the day.
Wow!

Allison Burke same here
Ditto
I can listen to this like a hundred times and not get tired of it. Great song!
The guy that says carmen sandiego, is my new favorite guy in the world
I love how Scott, Kevin and Elliot are all bustin' moves together, and Barry's just chillin' over with Jeff off to the side a bit. Just awesome.
Rockapella was always my favorite part of the show
Is it just me or are they singing faster than they did when they sang in the show?
Probably just to get it over with. You can tell how totally over this shit they are.
To distinguish Scott's faster version with Rockapella from Sean's original version with XRP and Groobebarbers
@@SlayerRunefrost Probably needed to for time.
Plus extra time for the drum solo and roll call.
@@SlayerRunefrost that’s understandable.
I found it. I finally found it. The video my music teacher showed my class in elementary school over a decade ago....
Must feel nice huh
There's one more thing you have to do. you know what it is. DO IT ROCKAPELLA!
Imagine sitting through this long ass concert waiting for this song
I loved this tv show when I was younger!
When I was a kid I use to watch that show everyday. the best theme song ever written. DO IT ROCKAPELLA!!!
I loved that show. Watched it everyday. I love this song.
Wow... This brings back some memories!

wmden1 hey there! I'm a millenial kid but can you tell me about carmen sandiego? I would appreciate it.
What would you like to know about?

I had that chance. I saw them live in Denison, Iowa. They rocked the house
I love this song its my childhood and never gets old!

+TherealRNO why don't they ever look in Sandiego cause she could just be sitting there reading a newspaper
Too obvious. Also too close to the real-life ACME Detective Agency in San Francisco which ACME CrimeNet's based on.
I didn't know Isabella was her middle name.
Also, his notes are not only to high, but to strong too. Forgot to mention that :)
barry reminds me of ron pearlman
I Love It a Lot

Hey Chief , I think Carmen's been spotted on the Northern Norway border this time . 🏡
I've just spoken to the chief. He says that you can go after her. Be careful.
Copy That . Thanks informer :)
I love the old school

are these the same qroup of guys who sang this during the late 80 early 90's.
Thee Hobbit Yes and no. The high tenor and percussion dudes were in the group during the Carmen Sandiego days, but everyone else is newer.
Yeah I now recognize Barry "white" Carl as the base or low tenor voice. He's got gray hair now, lol.
