Blackzero When two groups of people have been wearing each other down for years, and then all of a sudden an industrial powerhouse joins the war with millions of men just before you make your final offensive, it kinda puts a damper on things.
Things kinda changed since then. A few American owned ships were sunk. He'd have a riot on his hands if he didn't go to war and clearly, Congress was in favor of it too.
Legio Historia well yeah... what would you do if a country across the ocean was trying to bribe a country on your border to invade you and that they would help?
Well Canada played a bigger role on the battlefield than USA in this conflict, so no surprise they are mentionned. Yet I never heard any Canadians claiming they are the ones who won the war all by themselves (unlike a certain country...)
"The germans, who knew what was coming, had beefed up their manpower from 9 to 38 divisions. Nivelle just thought that was more to destroy". Oh boy, I have an idea how this is gonna work out.
Indy and team, many years ago when I watched the epic BBC series about the Great War, it impressed me a lot. The episode #16 is about America's entry. When finally "les américains" are marching through Paris, the narrator says: 'No conquering army could have a more rapturous welcome from its own people than France gave to this handful of inexperienced, untried but cheerful American soldiers. As yet their fighting value was almost nothing, but their moral effect was everything. To the onlookers in the streets of Paris, it was one of the most poignant moments in History. The New World was coming to redress the balance to the Old.'
I've come to this video after watching "1917" and Benedict Cumberbatch's remark that they'd just be called to go over the top next week turned out to be rather prophetic.
Reportedly (this is according to my AP European History teacher), when the U.S. landed in France, General John Pershing said "Marquis de LaFayette, we have returned."
I found an old book from 1919 in my Grandma's basement. It was called "The United States in The Great War" and it has many pictures and dates. Very interesting.
Bah we will even leave our best light machine gun at home, Browning Auto Rifle, at first and use that crappy French thing. Brother did they ever have a lot to learn, which they did.
The Sho-sho, or something like that. The people on both sides of that military contract deserved to be hanged. They're lucky they weren't hunted down like dogs later on.
Yeah I know the production problems slowed it down due to making Vickers for the limeys and so on but I was being more humorous than serious. Well attempting...
indeed, the Chauchat's reputation was made because the ones using during training of American troops had been crudely converted into an american caliber
When I hear Indy say, almost foreshadowing at how detrimental this would be to the Central Powers, "...the United States, joins the war.", I always feel chills down my spine.
+Micheal Knight Because a) I was bored b) I was on the laptop when the notification rang c) I thought it would be fun to do what everyone else does d) I like to be liked So, the benefits (being liked) outweighed the costs, therefore I posted.
This month and the next and going to be particularly poignant for my family history as my Great great grandfather and his brother died during this offensive in May, I believe in an assault on a French village called Bullecourt. Your channel inspired me to find that out and visit the Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery in Arras to pay my respects. Thank you for your hard work.
great episode Indy and crew, excellent as always. on a side note, there was some minor action of note this week on the 7th, the first shots between the US and Germany were fired in Guam between the crew of the SMS Cormoran II and the United States navy. it's quite an interesting tale actually, involving the SMS Emden. surprised it wasn't mentioned
Could you do a video on the Halifax Explosion. In December of 1917, a ship carrying weapons collided with another ship, causing its cargo to explode. The explosion destroyed an entire district, and a new one was created to replace it.
So Vimy Ridge finally begins... That battle stuck with me for some reason. I don't remember much from the Canadian War Museum, but I do remember one thing: when the Canadians came back from Vimy Ridge, the people cleared the way in awe, first silent. But then they chanted: "The Canadians did it! The Canadaians did the impossible! The Canadians have taken Vimy Ridge!"
great video as always. for us history geeks it's so refreshing to watch something presented as well as this. I love watching a topic I know and still learn something as well as enjoy it. ty.
The Great War keep up the great work!! Idk if you guys are going to but after this long project n a well deserve break. To see maybe ww2, Napoleonic Wars, or even smaller wars like the south african war . Presented in such a fashion(love all tbe details)Would be something to also look forward too.
I really admire how passionate you are about such a colossal change in our history. You're very humble, well-spoken and vivacious when you speak on these matters. I advocate for this channel and this entire history revision project you have so brilliantly pieced together. Thank you for all of your informative videos, Indy.
I haven't seen an episode in a very long time ago. I've just been so busy lately but now I'm going to try and catch up to your newest episodes. what a way to start. America joining the war. Great video

"The attack will break through the German lines here." What were the commanders smoking, that after more than two years they still hadn't realized that this all but guaranteed to fail?
Goran Drakulić is indeed an awesome name. I mean, imagine the schoolyard scene : Bully : "Hey you ! Little scrawny guy, what's your name ?" Goran : "Goran Drakulić" Bully : "... here, take my lunch money"
Hey great war team, who actually avoided getting sucked into this blood bath? I know many countries didn't get involved, but what are some that would have had something to gain if they did, and still chose not to for whatever reason?
This is an interesting sidebar or bit of trivia. The first women to be elected to the US House of Representatives was Jeannette Rankin of Montana. She was elected only twice, once in 1916 and 1940, for only 2 separate terms, 2 yr terms. She was one of the 49 Reps. and 6 Senators that voted against declaring war on Germany in 1917, and the only member of either body that voted against War with Japan on Dec. 8, 1941 after the Pearl Harbor attack. She later abstained in voting for war against Germany and Italy. She was an interesting person and an advocate of women's rights in the US.
I'd be very interested in hearing a rationalization against declaring war on Japan in 1941. The vote is practically just a formality after Pearl Harbour.
There's nothing wrong with being against violence but when another country is literally already at war with you I think you kinda have to do something about that. Again, I'd be interested in hearing how she would have suggested dealing with Japan without going to war. I'm not trying to be dick, either, just to be clear.
The SS Laconia or the "Silver Queen," Got sunk by a German U-Boat during WWI, it sank with a huge cargo of Silver on board over 33 tons were lost. You talked about it for a moment in one of your previous episodes, I was wondering if you can do a episode about it? It would be interesting to learn about.
With his historical significance so tied up in the worst war of human history up to that point, and being that he died only a decade after the war, I can see his wife thinking there was nothing truly to celebrate about his legacy. Maybe she just didn't want her husband's memory being used to lend any sense of glory or honor to a war that was nothing of the sort.
Actually it was not uncommon, the feeling being they were private and not for other's eyes. My Grandmother made my Mom promise to place my Grandfather's letters to her from France in the coffin with her, unread. She did exactly so when the time arrived. Privacy was once a very serious matter.
Tyvern Overlord, You know the definition of "feminism" is a bit more specific than "women organizing behind any ol' political cause", right? And that women who are feminists can support other causes too without it being a "feminist stance", yeah? And you're also aware that the Order of the White Feather was started by a man, Admiral Charles Fitzgerald, who was arguably using the men's own underlying misogyny to push them to join (because oh the shame of a _woman_ calling a man a coward, when it's men who are supposed to be brave and protect the meek and fragile women, and it just Would Not Do for that dynamic to be even slightly inverted.) Yeah, I'm sure you were well-informed and gave a lot of thought and consideration to those points. Just like I'm sure you've got amazing statistics to back up your claim that the "majority" of British soldiers were shamed into enlisting by women.
Black Knight And you still managed to miss my point that "women who happened to have been feminists also supported the war" =/= "feminism is to blame for all those men enlisting" (which, again, is a claim that no one has any statistics to back it up).
I'm somewhat confused. you mention General Allenby a couple of times in this episode referring to the Western Front, however I know General Allenby to have been the principle British general in Palestine. Do you mean the same Allenby or two different officers of the same name?
Thanks that's something I genuinely didn't know. I suppose that the Palestine theatre was more like the "war of maneuver" that Generals of the age had been trained for rather than the constant battering against solid defences of the Western Front.
Everyone is complaining about how we joined late. Why would you want the United States to join anyways? Us Americans didn’t want to join because we didn’t want to sacrifice men in a war that wasn’t for us. It was the president’s fault that we got in the war.
Hi guys! I was wondering which nation had the best hand grenade not only style but practicality. By the way you guys are one of my favourite channels. Thanks James
well in the end the american declaration of war was more important than their actual deployment as it triggered a german response in their desperate final offensives which meant their demise.
Yeah, potential and morale is everything in a war like this. The French and British were absolutely exhausted. Having a fresh and massive source of reinforcement gives everyone the optimism that they will win
Coming back to this episode for a quick refresher, before watching the film "1917," since this is the same week as the movie! Lots of overlap so far, the main plot point being the German withdrawal to the new defensive line.
You could have mentioned the torpedoing of the Brazilian steamship Paraná, which happened in April 5, and led to widespread protests in the country, and Brazil cutting diplomatic relations with Germany on April 11, this would escalate to more Brazilian merchant ships being sunk by German subs, and Brazil seizing several German merchant ships docked in Brazil, which would all lead up to Brazil declaring war in October.
My local paper released there issue from 100 years ago in its full glory, it even talked about cuba and brazil possibly entering because of torpedoed merchant ships.
Not really. Unless he's talking about ancient battles where the entire foe was slaughtered. Or where only 1 source of ancient writings survived the ravages of time. Many Germans wrote about the wars. They still do.
We know this episode was published 18 hours earlier than usual. There is a good reason for this and you will find out exactly why tomorrow.
The Great War Sweet looking forward to the video besides early isn't bad. I get my Great war fix early. Thx indie and Team
After November 18 what will be the future of this channel. Will you do a World War 2 series. Or do you have a plan for the future
The Great War I hope everything and everybody on the crew is okay.
Believe me when I say, early is always good.
Unless we're talking troop movements. In that case, it's a problem.
The Great War WAIT ARE YOU GOING TO THE CEREMONY AT THE NATIONAL WW1 MUSEUM... I can't go cause I'm poor but IM SO EXCITED
I'm calling it Indy I think this may be bad for Germany
Well, this are bad news but don't worry guys, Germany won't lose
Blackzero When two groups of people have been wearing each other down for years, and then all of a sudden an industrial powerhouse joins the war with millions of men just before you make your final offensive, it kinda puts a damper on things.
Comrade99 Coll And the Americans are bringing with them the largest collection of Charlie Chaplin films in existence!
Germany is doomed!
Comrade99 Coll Bad for everyone.
Comrade99 Coll What gave it away? 😂
Finally, Woodrow Wilson lives up to the great American tradition of doing a 180 on his campaign promise.
Gee fuzz, Wilson didn't have much of a choice, finally. ..
@zain mudassir He don't have the choice, the british fleet was the most powerful in the world and blocade the allies.
Things kinda changed since then. A few American owned ships were sunk. He'd have a riot on his hands if he didn't go to war and clearly, Congress was in favor of it too.
@James Henderson He only entered WW1 when American interests were threatened.
Legio Historia well yeah... what would you do if a country across the ocean was trying to bribe a country on your border to invade you and that they would help?
"Oh god! He mentioned Vimy! He mentioned Canadians!"
-Every Canadian viewer during this episode
+Caniewaak because we only had four Canada focused episodes so far?
yeshhh more Canada!!!! woop woop!!!! btw love you Indy and crew!!!!
The Great War I guarantee it was the exact same reaction for all of those episodes. We like it when people mention us.
Canada you have great Maple Syrup. What else is it that you do? P. S. you are welcome to take back Justin Beiber anytime. The joke's old now.

The Entente commanders were also pretty hyped until they realised how long it would take the US forces to arrive.
@@TheGreatWar Better late then never, though never late is better.
I've come to this video after watching "1917" and Benedict Cumberbatch's remark that they'd just be called to go over the top next week turned out to be rather prophetic.
Its pretty obvious but then at least they will of had enough siege guns to support them
Benedict is a method actor. So, he actually traveled back in time and personally went over the top. You better thank him for his service.
Reportedly (this is according to my AP European History teacher), when the U.S. landed in France, General John Pershing said "Marquis de LaFayette, we have returned."
"Lafayette, we are here." He also laid a wreath at Lafayette's tomb.
I found an old book from 1919 in my Grandma's basement. It was called "The United States in The Great War" and it has many pictures and dates. Very interesting.
These were very popular after the war.
The Great War Whoa.
That is a nice fact.
I've not been looking forward to this April. As a British person with aviation history and interests, this is not going to be a good few weeks for me.
Toby Wood it is going to be bloody lots of planes will be falling out of the sky
Toby Wood spoilers
Toby Wood Bloody april's about to hit you.
We made it easy for you, it will all be condescend in one special episode in late April.
I'm not sure if I should be grateful. Thanks?
I’m here after watching the movie 1917. That movie takes place on April 6. It was interesting watching this episode again after watching that movie.
America entering the war would be a great time to put up a special on John J Pershing!
We are working on it, probably will happen this summer.
Welcome fellow North Americans.
You have much to learn.
Bah we will even leave our best light machine gun at home, Browning Auto Rifle, at first and use that crappy French thing.

That's pretty cool.
Nice
That is cool.
I have respect for any person who served our country, respect.
Nice
Season 4 of WW1 is getting pretty intense. Probably going to be the best season so far
The network trusted us and with the bigger budget we can pull of much bigger special effects.
The Great War I can't wait to see how season 5 turns out!
That headline again: "The Guys with shotguns declare war on the guys without shotguns"
When I hear Indy say, almost foreshadowing at how detrimental this would be to the Central Powers, "...the United States, joins the war.", I always feel chills down my spine.
Last time I was this early, Franz Ferdinand was still alive!
Jesus Osegueda so before UA-cam existed? Or personal computers, for that matter?

Thanks and welcome to the show.
Hi Indy, are you planning to do an episode about Czechoslovak legion? I think their story is quite fascinating and would be worth a special episode.

Nothing about hemingway. You should mention him. His ww1 experience brought us an amazing book
The more I watch these videos, the more I realize just how respectable Canada's army is. So good to hear :)
You rule.. great job....thank you...
I think the phrase at 2:30 "the Germans retreated to a new and improved defensive line" is the plot of the movie 1917
I went to visit the Vimmy Ridge sight a couple of weeks ago. I have been looking forward to this episode ever since
USA:April foools!!
On April 5th?
Always fashionably late :P
master munguku The second worst joke made by any nation in the 1900's. Still very funny.
It's funny because the U.S would actually use that joke.
master munguku ......Yes. Yes we would.
Thanks. You make it feel like I have gone back in time and I am there.
Anyone where because of the movie 1917?
Which one
Never too soon....I can not wait a whole damn week for the next episode. Love you!
Give'em hell, Marines!
I haven't seen an episode in a very long time ago. I've just been so busy lately but now I'm going to try and catch up to your newest episodes. what a way to start. America joining the war. Great video
enjoy the binge
It's crazy to think that every video you guys make, that event happened a century ago.
After the turn of the century
In the clear blue skies over Germany
Came a roar and a thunder men had never heard
Like the screamin' sound of a big war bird
Up in the sky, a man in a plane
Baron von Richthofen was his name
Eighty men tried, and eighty men died
Now, they're buried together on the countryside
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree
Of the Bloody Red Baron
of Germany
Great as video as always!
(Germany Manages to cause a revolution in Russia)
Germany:Cheering
(America joins the war)
Germany: Autistic Screaming
You also forget Austria is trying to surrender in secret with the allies.
How long have you YEARNED to have a brain, dickhead?
Germany's response:

/'MURICA/ has joined the server: " ... ... ... ffffffffffffffFfffffFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*"
*NEIN NEIN NEIN NEIN!!!*
Getting kinda close to the Vimy Ridge episode! I know you guys will do the battle justice
At the moment, we are pretty sure we can't live up to some of the expectations of our fans.
"The attack will break through the German lines here." What were the commanders smoking, that after more than two years they still hadn't realized that this all but guaranteed to fail?
this was the first thing I watched on my birthday - what a great way to begin.
*Grabs helmet*
"ALRIGHT BOYS! WE'VE FINALLY MADE IT! IT'S NO LONGER SMOOTH SAILING FROM HERE!"
me encanta tu serie, muy completo y muy didactico.
Last time I was this late it was for a revolution
Finally caught up with the weekly updates! Looking forward to more.
April 6, 1917. Blake and Schofield just sending a message.
7 April 1917, it didn't go so great.
1:14, and thus it falls, thunderous cheers

Bully : "Hey you ! Little scrawny guy, what's your name ?"
Goran : "Goran Drakulić"
Bully : "... here, take my lunch money"
GREAT EPISODE-WELL DONE

Can you do an episode on the SS Laconia, the famous Silver Queen ship?
+SGT.Ryans Channel why is she famous?
The SS Laconia or the "Silver Queen," Got sunk by a German U-Boat during WWI, it sank with a huge cargo of Silver on board over 33 tons were lost. You talked about it for a moment in one of your previous episodes, I was wondering if you can do a episode about it? It would be interesting to learn about.
Can you Please do an episode?
Study the tactics of previous battles to find out what worked and what not worked seems to be something that very few people did in WW1...
"America declared war on Germany! - 14 minutes ago" Oh wait, it's just TGW.
Wow Indy, caught me unawares here. Good to see an early episode this time.
Indy has a surprise planned. Is it, the largest collection of Charlie Chaplin films in existence?
+CAP198462 if only
Amazing series; this is required viewing on UA-cam. Keep up the great work!
Did we really have to get into that conflict? What if we hadn't traded with either side? Then none of our merchant ships would have been sunk.
YESSSSS FINNALY IVE BEEN WAITING FOREVER.
Why would Henry Horne's wife destroy his letters?
With his historical significance so tied up in the worst war of human history up to that point, and being that he died only a decade after the war, I can see his wife thinking there was nothing truly to celebrate about his legacy. Maybe she just didn't want her husband's memory being used to lend any sense of glory or honor to a war that was nothing of the sort.

I've been waiting so long for this
could you explain the military actions of japan and if they fought outside asia
There will be a Japan special.
Thx keep up the good work
Love this video
Guys, this Nivelle offensive is sure to break the Germans. I can't possible see any way this one could fail!
I'm actually happy to see an ad for once. I hope this recent issue of monetization being cut from certain channels hasn't affected you guys.
I'm somewhat confused. you mention General Allenby a couple of times in this episode referring to the Western Front, however I know General Allenby to have been the principle British general in Palestine. Do you mean the same Allenby or two different officers of the same name?
Allenby served on both fronts and was sent to the Middle East in May 1917. he was in charge in one of the attacks during the Arras offensive.
Thanks that's something I genuinely didn't know. I suppose that the Palestine theatre was more like the "war of maneuver" that Generals of the age had been trained for rather than the constant battering against solid defences of the Western Front.
Like Falkenhayn, he was also sent to Palestine after Verdun and Romania.
At least for us Yanks this episode has been the most anticipated piece of media since at least the opening of Al Capone's vault

Will talk about Brazil in October.
I’m glad you used Martin Gilbert
I still think Germany's got this in the bag. Have you seen their divisions from Ulm?
My local paper released there issue from 100 years ago in its full glory, it even talked about cuba and brazil possibly entering because of torpedoed merchant ships.
In 2039, are you going to be doing a ww2 like this?
In 20 years lol, if they do its alot sonner.

"History is written by the victor".
-Orwell
one of the few things Orwell was wrong about, history is written by historians and who ever else cares to record it, regardless of side.
Not really. Unless he's talking about ancient battles where the entire foe was slaughtered. Or where only 1 source of ancient writings survived the ravages of time. Many Germans wrote about the wars. They still do.
I had a grande shell fragment ,that I found, that looked just like the one on the table.
