Illustrator - Calculate File Dimensions and Resolution for Accurate Output - File Size Demystified
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лип 2024
- Confused about how Illustrator calculates resolution? Unsure how file dimensions and resolution work in Illustrator? It's confusing and practically no one ever tells you what's going on. But I will!
I'll explain how Illustrator calculates resolution - so, if you create a file that is 3600 px x 3600 px in size I'll tell you why, when you export it as a 300 dpi image, its size balloons to 15000 x 15000 px in size. Seriously!
It will all make sense when you know what 'rules' Illustrator is playing by. When you know how Illustrator makes these calculations you can learn how to make the calculations yourself so you know how big a starting size image you need to make to get the output you want.
I explain this in detail so you understand exactly what values to put into your calculator to be able to export the Illustrator document as a jpg or png file at the exact dimensions and exact resolution that you want it to be.

You’ve solved one of life’s biggest design mysteries for me...thank you.
Dan! You and me both! I struggled with this for so long too until I finally sat down and determined I was going to get to the 'bottom' of the problem once and for all! Luckily I managed to piece it together so you and I can both cross that one off our 'I don't understand this one bit' list :)
Stay safe!
Me too, i have been getting alot of errors on illustrator due to large file sizes, but thanks to you i have seen the light
I cannot thank you enough for this video Helen! I have been so fed up of asking around and no one has offered an explanation in such simplified terms .
I'm so glad you found this video. It really is quite confusing until you understand what is happening - I am pleased you now know the 'secret'!
Helen, I am happily crying inside out right now. I spent 4 hours yesterday figuring this out as to why the hell my logo is not 800×800 pixels at the output file. But today is a goooooooooood day. All thanks to you. You are a lifesaver 😘😘
Oh, I am so sorry this happened to you but I am so happy you looked for an explanation and you now know how it works.
I was sitting in the office as an intern when my boss asked me to resize all the art I gave him. Had no idea this issue existed! Thank you Helen Bradley! Time to fix some artboards!
Fantastic! I am glad you found the solution you needed.
I cannot thank you enough for this video Helen! I have been so fed up of asking around and no one has offered an explanation in such simplified terms AND offered a simple solution as a work-around. I am so so grateful! 🙏🙏🙏
You are so welcome!
I'm annoyed I needed this, but I'm glad it exist.
I am so glad you found it Nikki.
OMG! I could hug you! I thought, "There must be a glitch in AI, the pixel's must be off!", LOL! BUT, when I used inches, I had no problems. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Your calculation and explanation were flawless. BRILLIANT! 👍💖😉
Thanks for sharing! I am so happy this worked for you.
Thank you so much. Truly. I have spent almost two whole days trying to solve this problem, without really knowing what the problem was, just that my saved files were much larger than my artboard. You've made me very happy.😁
Glad it helped! Thanks for letting me know - I'm just sorry you struggled so long before you found this video.
Helen, you are a life saver! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I've search high and low for this explanation and you have just done it eloquently and simply. I am HUGELY grateful
Lucy, thank you so much for your kind words. I am so glad to be able to demystify this for you.
OMG, thank you so much! This issue was driving me crazy and I was wasting so much time resizing my work. I am so happy you made this video and I found it. I appreciate all your work.
I’m so glad you found it. This is tricky stuff!
Finally!!! I've tried to find the answer to this mystery forever. Thank you so much!
Happy to help!
You explained this so clearly! I was watching your video on saving a pattern swatch and then came here to see what this was all about. With simple Algebra knowledge, this makes sense. Kids! You will need your Algebra education in the future. Pay attention in class!
I know huh? Every time I do one of these videos I’m so thankful that I paid attention in my math classes. To everyone who is wondering if they’ll ever use high school math - the answer is probably yes so it’s worth concentrating and learning the basics.
Dear Helen! Today I was commissioned with a CD cover and I ran into this tut just to double check all was fine with my template! Thank you again. XOXO from Rio!
Awesome news! You are so welcome!
Your tutorials are incredibly helpful. Thanks so much, Helen! Your videos really make a difference to those of us fighting to learn Illustrator.
You are so welcome Kristin.
Thank you so much for posting this! I’ve been tearing my hair out wondering why I couldn’t get illustrator to export a 15000 px file at 300 dpi. Now I understand how huge the file size was. No wonder Illustrator could not handle it! Thanks for making this crystal clear.
Amy, I am so glad you found this video and that it helped you.
You are the absolute best Helen! I have been trying to figure this out for about 2.5 hrs. Thank you so much. 😊
Happy to help!
Omg! Prefect! Just What I needed. Thing never coming out how I need them. Can' t tell you how much you helped me! Thank You So Much!
You are so welcome!
First of all, Lady I could buy you an entire barrel of wine just for this. THANK YOU!
Secondly who in the hell at Adobe thought this was a good idea? Do they know how much most designers hate maths?!! why can't it just be like Photoshop? Put in your size, export, get your damned size! Like WTF!! Anyway thank you. Please update us if any changes have been made recently that solves this problem.
SGG it's tricky isn't it? I will let you know if anything changes, I just don't expect it will. This is a pretty fundamental aspect of Illustrator. I'd just have been happy if they'd had come out and said it - took me forever to work this out and I still haven't seen anyone else cover it as an issue.
Thank you for solving this issue! Was driving me crazy lol. So satisfying when you find a solution to the VERY problem you are having! :)
Glad it helped!
This is the most helpful video ever!! I’ve been trying to figure out how to create a pattern for wallpaper, and the pixel requirement from the printer is that it needs to be 7200x7200 pixels, which is then printed on a 24 inch square. It was not making sense why Illustrator was giving me so many resolution errors! Now I get it. THANK YOU!! 🙏🏻
So glad that this helped you Des.
very important topic ..and not enough videos are there. i really appreciate your hardwork to make such videos and I am thankful for your help.
So nice of you to say that! Thank you.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you, I’ve spent hours trying to see what I was doing wrong and then I found your video and solved my issue! Thank you!

In illustrator How to save logo in same format like 250 x 250 which is initially added in creating new document. But after save in png with white background it dimension changes.
How to keep it same?
Hey Helen, thank you it really helped me a lot. Can you please inform me about the PNG too? how to get the exact pixel using ''Export as'' instead of ''save for web''.

I know... me too! Took me an age to work out what was going on. As far as I know this is the only UA-cam video that explains it! I'm just so glad I was able to work it out. It's easy when you know what is going on.
Helen if I could I'd kiss you right now!! 😂😂 It's incredible how hard it has been to try find an easy workaround for this.
😊 I’m so glad this helped Darren.
YOU ARE A GOD SEND, THANK YOU!!
You're welcome!
I cannot thank you enough for this video, Helen! I've been struggling to figure this out : ) All I see is PPI, where is DPI in my illustrator document setup, please????? : )
Read ppi and dpi as meaning/being the same thing. They are not - but for your purposes treat them exactly the same and all will work as expected.
@@HelenBradleyThanks very much!
Thank you so much
omg this changes everything! 🤗
It does, doesn't it? It's like someone just invited you into a secret society - so welcome to the cool people club!
thank you so much helen ♥♥
You're welcome 😊
Brilliant!!!
Thank you so much - happy to help demystify this stuff.
Hi Helen
A Pod site requests for mugs to have a file size of 208mm by 100mm which is according to them 6240 by 3000 px at 300dpi. When I create a file size of 208mm by 100mm it won’t upload says it’s too small. When I create a file size of 6240 by 3000 px at 300 using your formula. The file size in cm 52.83cm by 25.4cm which is way bigger than the 20.8cm by 10cm required. If I don’t use your formula and create a file of 6240 by 3000, the final size in cm is over 200cm . I don’t understand why using the formula hasn’t made the final size 208 by 100mm. It’s reduced it from over 200cm to 52cm but it’s still the wrong size. I still need to apply this concept to larger items like blankets. Concerned at the size of the files and clarity. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Awesome....Thanks a lot.
It's a pleasure Prakash.
Great job.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank You Dear !!

I was just about to quit illustrator because of this very annoying problem until I found your video.. thank you
Glad I could help!
Hi Ma'am, Your new Profile Picture is very nice BTW very useful tutorial, thank you
Thank you!
Thank you. This is a recent challenge for me as a new user of Illustrator. Is it possible to correct an image size that has already been created? Either increase or decrease the size value, or is it too late?
Hi, Helen! Thank you for this video. It works for me, but no matter what I try it increases the size by just 1 pixel. so 2801 X 2305 instead of 2800 x 2304. I ensured my X,Y settings on the artboard are whole numbers, not decimal and played with some of the settings in both the artboard and the save dialog that pops up with the 'File - Export As' setting and still can''t get it. I should mention I resized my artboard to 672 x 553 per your calculation and fit my artwork to it. I hope I can go ahead and post my file with the one pixel off hoping it won't cause print problems for the buyer? It's driving me bonkers! Any thoughts?
Linda, you will need to be careful about selling something that isn't the exact right size. This worries me a bit. If you have Photoshop, you might want to open the file in Photoshop and check out the edges. My concern is that there will be a row or column on one or two sides of the image which contain lighter pixels and this will be visible in the final design most particularly if you are selling these as seamless repeating patterns. I would be doing a bit of investigation here if I were you. Feel free to ask if you have other questions.
yesssss!!! thank you so much!!!!
You're welcome Bryan!
thank you so much teacher
I am so glad you enjoyed this.
