Where Is The Feedback Coming From?

- Today's Q&A Short comes from Brian who is asking about feedback.
Question:
Is there anything on the X32 console that will tell me where my feedback is coming from?
Answer:
There is no indicator or tool that will show you where feedback is coming from, but you will need to use the old method of muting channels. This is the only real way to identify outside of using the EQ screen to see if there is a specific channel that has a large, red line displayed.
In my experience, when soloing channels on headphones, the channel which is causing the feedback tends to have more of the feedback (if not all of it) on it - which is kind of logical.
This is based on old analog desks, of course the X32 does tend to show it up rather easily on the RTA.
If the feedback is severe, a quick glance at the meters will usually identify it right away. Its the channel that's pegged in the redzone. If the feedback is random chirps, I look at two things - are there any hot mics in close proximity to a speaker, if so that's probably the bad actor, if not I start going after the channels with the highest gain settings.
Yep, you are spot on. Thanks for adding this to the community.
Hello Allan what church do you do sound for. Love the videos. Love your teaching.
I’m the tech director at Area 10 Faith Community in Richmond, VA. It’s actually rare that I mix right now as I’m mostly playing drums. I have four other sound techs that tend to mix our services.
Great info as always !
