    Such a big win when you finally get a happy ending in Black Mirror

      It's not so happy actually, the simulated protagonists were just put through dozens of wrong partners 1000 times to finally run together and then get erased immediately. They weren't tortured for billions of years, though.

    By far the most positive episode of the show. Significantly more so than even San Junipero.

    So thousands of digital clones get psychologically manipulated for years and then killed off when their usefulness has come to an end. Even happy endings in black mirror are grim if you really think about them.

      Seemed pretty real to them. and to them it was well over a year, who knows how long for the other times. I guess it all depends what you consider to be sentient life. Do you feel what was happening to the prisoner in black museum was at worst bad taste rather than someone being tortured repeatedly?

    • @D33dums
      @D33dums 6 років тому +2

      Actually Ill give you that one Dave, lol. personally I felt that in USS Callister they were just making the best out of a bad situation, what with having been imprisoned in a virtual world for the rest of their existence. but I can see an argument for there probably being an escape for them eventually. canonically we already have synthetic bodies they can be downloaded into. honestly I was thinking more of San Junipero when I made the post. I mean its nice and all that their digital clones get to drive off into the sunset, but they both still died.

    • @D33dums

      Mark, White Christmas is the episode that made me twig on to the possibility that all the people in 15 million merits are digital clones. Seeing the 15 m m talent show on the billboard at the end of Waldo convinced me further.

    It was not a happy ending if you count those simulations as clones like in many of the other Black Mirror episodes. White Christmas for example. San Junipero as another. We weren't told what happened with the "dating app". How did they get the info? Cloning their minds perhaps and then deleting them? Only Charlie Brooker could answer that but he likes to leave people guessing and to draw their own conclusions.
    Even San Junipero or USS Callister is not a happy ending... more like a bitter sweet one.
    The first Stargate series had an episode were the main guys were physically cloned. The clones were them and had their memories up to that moment. Eventually the originals came home but the clones had to forsake everything and stay behind. Not a happy ending really.
    Maybe those people using the app and scanning their minds weren't really thinking what they are doing like the woman in White Christmas that cloned herself as a "cookie" to control her house etc..

    • @TheHenchNerd
      @TheHenchNerd 6 років тому +2

      Dumpster Fire wrong about San junipero. Agree about this and white Christmas. The idea of San junipero was that their actual conciousnes entered the digital universe and not clones. That wasn't open to interpretation and was in fact them at the end.

    • @dumpsterfire7214
      @dumpsterfire7214 6 років тому +1

      I agree and disagree. It was fairly happy but I have always thought that their original "minds" died and were copied with the same knowledge etc.. and then transferred to a mainframe. Each to their own I guess. :D

    • @taloutezero
      @taloutezero 6 років тому +1

      They weren't cookies. They were just simulations based on everyones profiles on a simple dating app.

      Wait hold up. These aren't clones, just programs. Also San Junipero, they're not clones, that's their actual consciousness uploaded to the program. Both episodes have happy endings.

You know I think it is true that if your meant to click with someone you can f*** it up as many times as you like with little things and the love and passion will still be there. Ok, I personally find this episode dark as hell, and i will explain why. Remember other episodes of black mirror where they make clones of people consciousness? While they aren't the real thing, they think and feel just like real people. To them, they aren't the clone, they are the real thing. There are even episodes where they mention how that technology has become illegal because of how messed up it is or can be. You can even be tried for murder if you kill or destroy a mind clone (or whatever you want to call them).
    Ok, now follow me here. This is just a theory, but let's say this dating app links up with your mind to "help you find your soulmate". After all, these were really realistic copies of the original. How is this app on their phones able to do that? Unknowingly to the customer, their rights are being violated by actually cloning their consciousness 1000 times over in order to run a simulation to find out their compatibility. These poor clones are being forced to go through these scenarios just to be deleted/destroyed once they succeed in escaping with their love. 1000 tortured virtual souls all for the sake of the originals to find out if they are compatible. Then you think about the dating apps out there, like tinder. Imagine if every time you you swiped right 1000 virtual souls went through this purgatory just for your benefit. Think about it, they aren't using an algorithm, they are using an illegal cloning technology to have a successful business. By the logic of that law, they are killing 1000 "people" every time someone "swipes right", as it were. Now, like the creators of that app, you may be thinking the same thing "They aren't the real person, it doesn't matter". I guess it just depends on what you consider to be real or not. After all without our consciousness, without mind, without the essence of who we are, we are just watery flesh bags no different than animals, incapable of sentient thought. So what happens if there are minds but no body? What happens if you are forced to be data in simulations? It's the worst type of hell and psychological torment you could imagine. But, that's just how I view it. Still, it's a great episode! Brilliant simulation twist.

      My dude tortured the lady in the egg , leaving her to be isolated for 6 months, if they were just "digital copies" with no feelings or thoughts of their own, why do they have to be tortured to be compliant? 🤔

  • @creativename8273

    People always fail to see this is not a happy ending... every time it matches people it creates 1000 copies of each of them and then kills all 2000

    • @Cbricklyne
      @Cbricklyne 6 років тому +1

      If that's the interpretation you took from the episode, then you kinda missed the point.
      By a mile.

    • @creativename8273
      @creativename8273 6 років тому

      Cbricklyne That’s literally what happened in the episode

    • @Cbricklyne
      @Cbricklyne 6 років тому +4

      No it's not.
      Everything that happened in the episode was a SIMULATION.
      Part of a computer program or dating app (like Tinder or something like that) that was using digital clones of the two of them to simulate them dating in 1000 simulations to see if they were a match.
      The only real people in the entire episode were the last two people (or versions) of them you saw at the end.
      There was NOBODY created.
      There was NOBODY destroyed.
      It was all part of a virtual simulation that WAS. NOT. REAL.
      Again, you missed the entire point of the episode.
      COMPLETELY!

    • @creativename8273
      @creativename8273 6 років тому

      Cbricklyne Uh, yeah I know, but if you’ve seen any other episode of the show you know how simulations work there; they’re sentient.

    • @Cbricklyne
      @Cbricklyne 6 років тому +2

      There's nothing in the episode that indicated that either of the (two simulants) were sentient in any way, any form or any capacity - as opposed to just being very sophisticated ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) algorithms running a very discrete simulation program.
      Something can have artificial intelligence without actually being sentient. That's where your confusion is coming to play here and it seems you don't even truly understand what sentience really means in the context of life and artificial life (or AI)
      Sentience implies and denotes Self-awareness and a capacity for metacognition.
      Were either of the two of them actually self-aware? (I.e. did they actually know that they are programs running in a simulation and incapable of doing anything other than what their programming instructed them to?)
      If your answer is no, then the same answer applies to whether they were sentient or not.
      Sentience doesn't just refer to the capacity for "feeling" (stimulii like pain, or even abstract things like love).
      That capacity can be programmed - along with the appropriate response to said stimuli.
      What you can't program (and what truly distinguishes us from the most advanced Artificial Intelligence) is Self-Awareness and Metacognition.
      Stop applying the same rules you saw with other programs and simulations in other episodes to this one.
      They're not all the same.
      These simulants were nothing like the 'Cookie' in White Christmas, for example (which, in fact KNEW it was a program - even though it took some convincing), or the digital clones in USS Callister (again, even they knew they were not real human beings and were just digital recreations inside a program - Self-awareness).

    Even though I really enjoyed this episode, I don't like the implications that this might be the future of dating. Having a system pick someone for you takes away all the excitement and discovery of finding someone that you connect with. I would get bored quickly and be unappreciative if my "perfect mate" was chosen for me. So this system would not work for me.
