MEALS AT KINDERGARTEN (sorry, I forgot to mention it): All the meals are included (no extra cost). Main meals are breakfast and lunch, and snack times in between, mainly fruits. And there is something called "Mellanmål" which is bread with toppings in the afternoon. The meals are healthy and freshly cooked if possible. Sometimes kindergartens use caterers if they are smaller.
Have you been to the international library In Stockholm? They have books for children in most of the major languages of the world. Located in Fridhemsplan
Hi, again! I've been in Stockholm since February and would like to add that for foreigners that do not come from an EU country the personnummer is required :( also you have the chance to request a teacher that knows the native language of your child, in order to facilitate the integration 😊
I found this video very reflective of own upbringing and very much understood your thoughts on this. My parents who were Sudanese, came to New York in 1959 on work assignment and I was born in 1971. So my very first language at home naturally was Arabic but later on going to nursery and elementary school, English became completely the dominating language at home and later at work. My German cousins (my mother's elder brothers in Hamburg and Frankfurt) had a similar situation in Germany at around the same time in 1971-1979 but they had German mothers so had a head start in German but we today who are in our early 50's speak in either English or German. I am now learning Swedish seriously three times a week formally but as my Swedish partner has young children whose English (along with hers) which is impeccable it's very easy to lazily lapse into English. So no worries about children and language acquisition; they are sponges.
I couldnt explain it better! My sugestion is to ask other parents in ones area, wich kindergarten they think is the best? And whatabout one of the nearest, where most of children frome the same area is going to? Both private and public kindergarten is payd for by your kommun "comunity" and have to follow the same rules! The breakfast is often served at a specefic time!
Hi Uli! I sat and waited for you to tell me if the children get food at the preschool. Once or more per day? Is it included in the price you pay per month? or is it an extra cost? Cheers Tom.
I am not Uli but maybe i can help her answer this one! Food is included in the price and is mandatory for the preschool to provide. If the preschool is a bigger one they usually have a chef that cooks the food on site but if its a smaller one without a chef the municipality have like a catering service that provides the food. If your kid needs it they can have both breakfast and lunch at the preschool and some fruits in between as well. Hope that answers your question!
Ah, I forgot! My bad, sorry! Yes, all the meals are included. Main meals are breakfast and lunch, snack times in between, mainly fruits. And there is something called "Mellanmål" which is bread with toppings in the afternoon. The meals are healthy and freshly cooked as Axel mentioned below.
Good description of how it generally works here in Sweden. I don't want to be rude, but as a Swedish father, I wonder from the way you describe the situation you are in - where is the father? You get the impression that you are the only one responsible for the children
Not rude at all. It’s always good to ask questions 😊 He’s actually currently looking after our youngest daughter during parental leave. I mention a lot “I” and “me” but it’s really “us” 😅 When the kids are both at home he goes to the library with them or the museum whilst I’m working.
Hey Uli. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ I'm an American that LOVES your content! I will be moving abroad in the summer of 2024 to start a Master's degree program at Malmo University in Malmo, SE with my husband, and hopefully, our tiny human -- as we are going through IVF currently. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ I watched your video on kindergarten and learned that children can begin after the age of 1, but what if we arrive and our newborn is younger than 1? Do you know they type of support that is offered for childcare then? If you can also share the name of the government organization in Sweden that is over the childcare system, I would greatly appreciate you. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ Cheers :)
Thank you so much! If you want childcare before your little one is 1 year old there are agencies like nanny.nu/ and my-nanny.se/. Or you sometimes find people offering their childcare services in Facebook groups if you haven't joined them already. You don't need to do anything in terms of registering with the government for childcare. But if you're looking for parental leave pay then check out www.forsakringskassan.se.
@@erik.... that makes sense; but as a U.S. citizen that likely will be relocating for a graduate program to SE with a very young infant, I would not have access to what SE residents and citizens have........at least......that's how I understand it to be. I'm still learning.
@@stac_y_with_no_eI was in a similar situation, moving to Sweden with my partner and 5-months old daughter. Even if you haven‘t previously worked in Sweden and paid taxes, you can still apply for parental leave with Försäkringskassan and receive some SEK 5,000/month.

Villkoren för hur många timmar ett barn får vistas i förskolan om man är arbetslös eller föräldraledig variera mellan kommunerna oavsett vem som äger förskolan. Nacka har sina regler som inte är samma i grannkommunerna. Bra presentation annars.
I think that one reason for the diversity in the personnel is that it is among the jobs where education has not been a formal requirement. At least not when there is a lack of applicants. You simply must hire someone. Same thing in elderly care. Not that this necessarily means that quality goes down! When I was in the board for a preschool I think that it was only one or two that had university education.
Hej hej from the north. As a foreigner(EU) who moved to Sweden 3 months ago, we are still waiting for the kindergarten spot for us. We applied on the first week and we were told that we need to wait around 4 months for a spot, if not until August, which is ridiculous when you apply in February, to be told that there will be a spot in August for your child.... My daughter is almost 3yo (has a bday on 18 May), so I am not sure if they are waiting for her to make 3 or they just dont have a spot really. During those 3 months we got everything else, PN-s, house, car, jobs... just the kindergarten is the problem... and i just don't understand how they can keep us from work... i haven't been working for the past 3 months and I am taking care of her... I hope they will at least keep the 4 month deadline they gave me and not pros-pone us for August 🤪🌞😇 (we live in Sollefteå kommun if anyone asks)
Ah, I totally understand you. If I were you I would get in touch with the kindergarten directly. Or if it's possible have more preschools lined up and contact them all. If you type into Google "jämför förskolor" and then the municipality you live in you should find all the preschools and there you can also find ones which accept direct applications (I know that because I contacted the municilpality I lived in and asked them if I can do anything to expedite the process 😅). Then you put them in the queue and they can accept you immediately. June-August can be a bit tricky though because many preschools reduce staff and many kids are on holidays so preschools even merge during that time. It took me 2 months to find a kindergarten and I started looking in June. I hope it works out for you. You should get a place within a month but as I said I would contact the preschools directly or choose one which accept direct applications/no queues.
As a swedish , who used to work at kindergarten/preschool, and living in the north of Sweden, I have never heard of anyone asking the preschool to be put in a que. Not the preschool who takes care of that but the municipality. You usually get a spot within 4 months but it can be that no spots are available. Here it it easiest to get a spot in August, that is the month most children starts and it takes at least one week to introduce the child and get an easy start for the child so you can’t just show up the first day and leave the child. If it is a smaller child it takes 2 weeks. In june and july it is holiday/vacation time, maybe the beginning of August too. Many preschool close during july so the few children that needs care are at one preschool that is open. Since everyone in Sweden have 5 weeks vacation most takes out at least 4 of them during summer so we expect that every child also has 4 weeks off preschool. They also needs vacation. And starting preschool in the beginning of August is most usual, and to start in June often makes no sense because in july the staff is on holiday therefor August is more natural. Now I am talking about my experience and maybe that it might be a little different in other places but I guess the differences are only small. Every preschool follows a national ”läroplan”, think that is curriculum in english, so it won’t be much difference between the different preschools on how they work. In july most of Sweden sort of stops, it is holidaytime! Factorys closes, not all of them, and different businesses stops for those 4 weeks, not the service jobs of course. So summer holiday is very important to us.
The long waiting time _may_ be due to either lack of free spots in your area, the planning cycle at the municipality, or both. I know that the planning cycle for child care in our municpality governs how many spots there might be in each district. Also, if you chose a spot close to home, which might be very popular, that might also affect the waiting time. So, while I understand it might be frustrating, it might not actually be all that ridiculous and have a reasonable explanation.

Yes, we have been to this library! :)
You can apply for more hours when on parental leave for example. It's normally not that difficult to get extra hours for your older kid(s).
Oh, that's new to me. Do you need a specific reason or can you just apply with no reason?

Usually the swedish parents are at home with children that small as the parental leave is generous.

Because I'm German I probably say kindergarten all the time. But yes, förskola in Swedish and preschool which I say a few times I believe.
